Sep 27, 2019 - Day 7 Levanto - Cinque Terre travels

Beautiful Levanto. I love our apartment and the town. I think I could happily live here. Our apartment is close to the beach and is very comfortable for the four of us. We had a interesting night last night. Joe woke in the middle of the night and vomitted...fortunately I had put a bowl by his bed when he went to bed as he was feeling a bit off. He also woke up a few times imagining things going on that weren't. Even though he has a bit of a cough, I think he may have been dehydrated. I had my fingers crossed that he'd wake up feeling...

Sep 26, 2019 - Day 6 Rome to Levanto

Exciting day today as it's time to journey to Levanto at the north end of the Cinque Terre. As we didn't pack last night, everyone was up early to shower, breakfast and pack. Our train was leaving Termini at 9:50 so I wanted us to be ready to catch the bus in by 8:30. Everyone did a great job and we were on our way on schedule. Unfortunately, I stopped on the way out the door to take a photo and put the bag that held our water bottles down on the floor to take a photo and walked out without it. Door locked behind us and I couldn't get back...

Sep 21, 2018 - Day 8 - Cinque Terre

We had a good nights sleep. It is so peaceful as the house is outside the village in the hills overlooking Levanto. I forgot to mention we are staying in an apartment in a 16th century house. It has a lovely feel to it. The only noise is from the birds waking and the church bells in the next village up the hill. Valerio works night shift at a hotel in town so arrived in time to take us down to the village to catch the boat that calls into each of the villages along the Cinque Terra. We grabbed a drink before buying our tickets - Riley was...

Sep 20, 2018 - Day 7 - Roma to Levanto

Time to say arrividerci to Rome. We'll be back on 3/10 ready to fly home on 4/10. We went down to breakfast early and then showered and packed ready for a days train travel. We are off to Levanto, near the Cinque Terre, via Firenze, Bologna and Milano....certainly the long way however it will do us good to have a relaxing day and one off our feet. We took to 8:30 shuttle and caught the train to Termini. We were out there early and it was drizzling, so had to stay undercover until the shuttle was ready. We've had lovely weather while we've...

Jun 22, 2015 - No stair climbing machine required

June 22: Last day of 3 weeks of hiking today! We're doing an 8 km walk north of the 5 lands themselves but still within the Cinque Terre park to the town of Levanto. This involves another classic morning ascent straight uphill on the hundreds of stone steps to the top of the pine topped ridge, where we're rewarded again with a detour to the top of the cape, Punta Mesca to see a ruined stone church and views down the coast of the entire Cinque Terre. As we slog up the hill, a teenage American boy jogs past us up the steps, asks where the...

May 14, 2015 - Bike Ride

Thursday, May 14th. We woke to rain so resigned ourselves to a day of rest. Around 2 it brightened up so headed out on our bikes. The old railway line was converted into bike trails along the coast so off we went. There were many tunnels and it was lovely and cool riding in them. The scenery was again spectacular and we rode all 12 km of it out and back. As there was a very loud family (3 children fighting and crying) camping across from us we decided to stay in town to eat at the restaurant suggested to us. Low and behold as we were...

May 13, 2015 - Off to Levanto

Wednesday, May 13th. We were reluctant to leave here as who knows what is down the road. But off we went. It wasn't easy getting out of town. Bill was sure that Richard knew where we were suppose to go. We literally squeezed between two buildings with maybe an inch to spare only to be met with a dead end around the next corner. I noticed a fellow in his garden yes, waving at us vigorously yelling NO No No!. I thought really. He was gesturing with his hand to push something so I went up to a gate and pushed the button and it opened onto a...

Sep 23, 2014 - From France to Italy

Well I am a little behind we left yesterday from France. Garmina (our GPS) which we told to take us on back roads led us on some hair raising roads for sure on our drive from France to Italy. We had no reservvations so ended up in San Remo Italy. The first picture is from our room at the hotel Villa Sylvia which turned out to be great for a great price we lucked out because parking is a problem and the Villa had great parking. After we had the breakfast at the hotel we drove on the major highway till we turned off for Portofino. That was a...

Sep 27, 2013 - Cinque Terra

We had just a little time in the morning to explore in Florence before catching our train. We went to the Medici Chapel where there were fabulous statues by Michelangelo. The interior of the chapel had beautiful red and green marbles which was very different from anything we had seen. After coffee at our local coffee shop it was time to leave the lap of luxury for a very HOT train ride to Le Spezia and then connections to our final destination for the day - Monterossa, the last of the 5 Cinque Terra towns. We had a bit of a surprise when...

Jun 28, 2012 - Cinque Terre villages

Thursday 28/6/12 Cinque Terre villages, about 20ks walking. The horses in the paddock about 100m away were rowdy last night, neighing, galloping and letting off gas, …well we guess it was the horses and not the neighbours in the motorhome next door. Its very warm by 8am but our intention to get to the walking trail on the Cinque Terre is put on hold cos Pete still can’t find his phone, and its important to try to get it back . Pete goes to reception and calls his phone, someone answers it and the staff explains to that person we need the...

Jun 27, 2012 - Levanto via the train

Wednesday 27/6/12 Levanto via the train 1pm we get bikes onto the train again to go to Levanto, just north of the Cinque terre villages, where there are several campgrounds. 30 mins later we are ready to get off the train..but..the doors wouldn’t open, even with us frantically pressing the aperto button. Pete tries the red handles on the doors but he is reluctant to force them, as being painted red, ..are we supposed to touch them??. Pete races through the train and returns with a train worker in which time the train has continued on a few...

Nov 11, 2008 - Levanto (Cinque Terre) (Italy) 11-12th Nov

The Cinque Terre is a stretch of Unesco listed national park coastal scenery encompassing five tiny villages, Riomaggiore, Manorola, Corniglia, Vernazza and Monterosso. The main purpose for visiting is to walk the 12km Via dell'Amore, linking the five towns. We started with the train from Levanto to Riomaggiore with the intention of walking back through the Cinque Terre to Monterosso and then the train for the final section back to Levanto (This plan also contains the mostly downhill route). The day didn't start as intended with a brisk run...
