Sep 16, 2018 - CROSSING; HBR Amalfi, Italy to Pontile, Ischia (Italy). (8:00a to1:00p)

Copolla came to Milena early this morning, and told us we had to leave now if we wanted to fuel up before we left. Being “a prosciutto slice of a BIG BOAT sandwhich”, Copolla helped us to squuuuuueeeeezze out of our spot, that was so very roomy when we arrived yesterday. (pic) . We were like a cork, being ejected from champagne, as we “popped” out from between two boats, as our slip immediately disappeared as it was swallowed up by our two neighbors. With Copolla and his zodiac at our side we carefully made our way toward the gas...

Jun 15, 2016 - Last Day in Ischia

After an even more leisurely start than usual we enjoyed a late breakfast. Xavier had headed out early to explore more of the island while we were happy to relax and enjoy our last full day. After eating we walked to check out some of the local shops - we found a street we had passed yesterday and discovered even more shops and restaurants, so had a pleasant time checking them out. We picked up a couple of items for ourselves and a child's apron for Xavier (he was after one for his niece). We then stopped for a cappuccino before strolling...

Jun 14, 2016 - Ischia

Further to last night's journal - we had sent off the trip journal emails and were reading when just after midnight there was a huge fireworks display out the front of the hotel. We went onto the balcony and caught the display. It was so loud as the fireworks were less than 100m from the shore and of course the noise reverberated on the surrounding hills which made it so much louder. Thank goodness we hadn't been asleep. We are assuming that that is the end of the fireworks being the last day of the festival. Another beautiful day here in...

Jun 13, 2016 - Relaxing in Ischia

After a bit of a sleep-in we met Xavier for breakfast in the hotel just after 9.00am. It was a good continental buffet with the usual great selection of cakes, breads, cold cuts and cereal. Shortly after breakfast Xavier returned to sleep (he had not had a great night) and so we set off for a laundromat a little further down the coast. After lugging our laundry nearly a kilometer in the warm morning air we found that the laundry would take three days to be serviced! Since we leave in two days this wasn't an option. We carried on further to...

Thackers Go Fourth

Jun 12, 2016 - Off to Ischia - Italy

Another beautiful day as we left Copenhagen for Ischia - Italy. We ordered the taxi for 8.00am but we had another mishap as the hotel had ordered it for 8.30am instead. We managed to get a taxi to arrive by 8.10am and were on our way to the airport so we were there by 8.35am. We checked in fairly easily but at security Barb got pulled up when the machine beeped. The security guy wanted to pat her down but she said no and asked for a female staff member - of course nothing was found!!! We got through then had a quick bite to eat before...

Jun 12, 2008 - Ischia

Took hydro jet to Ischia for 18.50 euros. Abit of rain this morning, so I waited at a cafe on the dock and had a coffee and pastry. Once I arrived in Ischia I took the bus to the other side(Forio Port) and walked up to The Ring Hostel. This hostel was an old convent back in the day an is now ran by 3 Italian brothers who also own a restaurant and another hotel. Spent the day walking around the town and getting info on the island, and walked about 40 minutes to a beach and relaxed in the sand for a bit till it started raining again. For...

May 27, 2008 - Arriving in Naples/Ischia

I arrived in Naples safely. It is absolutely the scariest place I have ever encountered. So glad my time there was limited! There is a sense of desperation and anger like I’ve never felt anywhere before. Unemployment, crime, and poverty are huge problems and the Mafia is deep-seated. I was very scared during the excursion around Naples – the traffic is beyond frightening! Between the moments of terror, we did manage to walk around the base of Mt Vesuvius – which is beautiful – a sharp contrast to the vandalism, trash, and decomposition of...

May 26, 2008 - interim report

Greetings from Italy! This is an "interim" report. The hotel does not have internet access, so I have been writing my entries on my laptop. I saved them to a thumb drive to upload at the internet cafe; however, the Italian version of Word XP will not recognize the files. So I am going to try and figure a few other ways to save the files and post later. Given how much it costs to use the pcs at the internet cafes and my lack of speed in using this different keyboard (NOTHING IS WHERE IT SHOULD BE - I HAD TO ASK SOMEONE HOW TO GET THE @...
