Thursday, June 7th, 2012: Rif. Valparola to Rif. Fanes This was the hike of the three big steps. The first big step started after a nice 2 km gentle downhill from Valparola. About halfway there I saw it and said out loud “you gotta be kidding”. How can they expect anyone to go up that unbelievably steep and narrow cranny in that cliff? And yet they do. And you do. Wednesday, June 6, 2012: Rest Day at Passo Valparola (2 km from P. Falzarego) WWI was here too. A lot here. I thought WWI was all about trenches in France. I visited the WWI museum here and the WWI tunnel to the top of mountain. The high ground. And I also met Christine and Volker from Germany who helped me re-plan the rest of my route and explained their equipment. The day started so great. Tuesday, June 5, 2012 Selva Gardena to Rif. Valparola I'm writing this on Wednesday, June 6, from the safety and comfort of Rif. Valparola. So, you can assume that I made it. And I did indeed, albeit barely. 4 times lost, snow almost covered the trail near the start, thick mud, go-no-go hotel closed, rock scrambling for long stretches, only one pair of bootprints on the trail to keep me company, and historic Col di Lana Trail that seemed to go on forever.
