Oct 21, 2017 - Depature Time

Unfortunately the time has come to say goodby to Italy - it is not addio (goodbye) it is arrivederci (see you later) as I am sure we will return at some time! We are up at 5:30 as the luggage needs to be in the sitting area by 6:30 and we are scheduled to depart for the Rome airport at 7:00am. Patrizio arrives to pick up our luggage and invites us to join the rest of the vanpool in the coffee bar for a cup of coffee and a light breakfast. At 7:00 we left Casa Gregorio for Fiumicino Airport - a one and one-half hour drive. We arrive at the...

Oct 20, 2017 - Pizza Party

Today is our last full day at Casa Gregorio. We'll be leaving early tomorrow morning for Rome to catch our flight home. After another lovely breakfast Valerio gave us a demonstration on making pizza dough. He makes it look so easy you want to try to do it yourself. We are going to be having a pizza party for lunch and we'll be able to make pizzas that will be baked in a wood-burning pizza oven. A pizza that would take 30 minutes to bake in a conventional oven takes just a few in the pizza oven. We have about 3 hours before lunch, so we all...

Oct 19, 2017 - Coffee & Wine Tour

Today began with another wonderful breakfast at Casa Gregorio. There were two different breakfast wraps containing cheeses and meats. Along with that was a myriad of yogurt, pastries, and fruit. Several of us went for an after breakfast walk up to the top of old town enjoying its beautiful charm. At the crest of the hill, overlooking the valley, stands a beautiful monument representing a mother protecting her child in the aftermath of WWII. The movie "Two Women" starring Sophia Loren was made in this exact location recalling this story. We...

Oct 18, 2017 - Farm and Prosciutto Tour

Farm and Prosciutto Tour - With a later breakfast and departure time today, Judi B and I decided to take a walk to the hilltop park overlooking the valley below and attempt some sunrise pictures. At 7:15 there is little activity except for a few locals leaving for work and the church bells tolling! Beautiful morning! Back to the cottage to shower, dress and go to the coffee bar for our breakfast of yogurt, fresh fruit, frittata, bread pudding and pastries plus your choice of coffee! Our first stop is down the hill to visit Pastorella, the...

Oct 17, 2017 - Antipasti

My day started with getting up in time to see a beautiful sunrise out the front door of our cottage. After breakfast, where all our goodies from the night before were available in addition to the normal breakfast offerings of an Italian variety, we headed out to the local village farmer's market and flea market. There we so many fresh products--fruits, vegetables, meats, fish, sausage, bread, spices, and more--and opportunities for souvenirs. I bought some anise seed for one of the cookie recipes I want to make at home and Wanda bought some...

Oct 15, 2017 - Travels to Castro Dei Volsci

October 15 - We are up early to finish packing, clean the refrigerator and be downstairs curbside to catch our 8:30 taxi to the Bologna train station. Thinking our train departs at 9:15 we are a little early for our 9:50 departure. A little confusion as there is a 9:40 train running a little late to the same destination as our 9:50 train - but thankfully we figure it out prior to boarding! It seems everyone is traveling via train as our car with reserved seats is packed and Judi B ended up with her luggage under her feet - luckily Wanda and...
