Sep 20, 2017 - Mule trails over Lago Como

Sept.19 Another mountain over Bellagio. We have a shorter ring walk of just 10 km over Bellagio- piece of cake no?...well up a mountain trail we go again, bushwalking a bit, glad of our gps to tell us when we inevitably get off track in the woods (we blame our route directions- the author appears to be periodically dyslexic or right/left challenged, and keeps calling narrow dirt paths crossing "intersections". Also glad of our poles to hoist the old bods up a narrow rocky steep slope, oy!! Hams are getting a workout this trip! But rewards...

Sep 19, 2017 - Climbing the Sentiero del Viandante -what comes up must go down!

Sept.19 Lago Como from on high Day 2 in Bellagio and another mountain to climb! This one is called Monte Foppe, which doesn't' sound romantic at all so we will use the name of the historic scenic path we are on - the Sentierre Viandante. A quick ferry ride across Lago Como again brings us to the cute little village of Varenna to start a hike that can only be described as an endless hill-climb... 840 meters elevation gain over 5 km then back down again, over a good but rocky trail, sometimes a bit of a scramble, occasionally hugging a...

Sep 18, 2017 - Bellagio- the real one! A climb to convento di San Martino

Sept.18 Bellagio, Cadenabbia, Convento di San Martino Leaving Orta San Giulio behind, again almost sorry, such a charming place, although I won't miss Doug saying over and over daily how Orta is meant to be the most romantic lake in Italy..I think he had ulterior motives there. We make it to Bellagio driving over the rock wall-lined road, 1 lane somehow accommodating trucks, buses and cars passing each other, a game of Italian "pollo" where biggest wins and you say your prayers between whoops of laughter. Bellagio is lovely and we find...

Oct 4, 2014 - Bellagio

@@@@@@@ Here’s some of what the Lonely Planet – Italy’s chapter on Lombardy and the Lakes has to say about Bellagio: “The place that inspired the Las Vegas casino (the same one involved in a heist in Ocean’s 11) lives up to its fabled reputation. Bellagio’s sapphire-blue harbour, maze of stone stair¬ cases and colourful shuttered buildings are truly enchanting. Although summers and weekends teem with visitors, if you turn up on a weekday outside high season, you’ll have the little village almost to yourself.” KAPOORS ON THE ROAD Bellagio...

May 30, 2013 - First Night in Bellagio

Hi Again, After meeting our tour leader and our group at the Milan Airport when we finally were able to get off the plane without the use of wheelchairs, a coach ride to our hotel in Bellagio on Lake Como, and catching a nap, a special treat awaited. A private boat tour of Lake Como provided our introduction to the area and to all twenty members of our group. Lovely white local wines and gourmet canapés added to the ambience. Spectacular views of steep mountainsides reaching to the lake's edges, with little towns of houses with orange-tiled...

Oct 19, 2012 - Bellagio

Morning comes a little later here than we're used to, daylight starts to make a difference round 8:00am and because of how the motel is situated and the time of year the sun actually doesn't hit our room until mid afternoon. So right after breakfast we started our exploration of Bellagio. As we came out the font door of the motel a beautiful big muscle car pulled up, Mike started to dribble but it was waaaaay out of our league. We continued to walk down the road from our motel taking the long way to the harbour. It still didn't take long...

Oct 18, 2012 - Venice to Bellagio

Today we left Venice. The train wasn't due to leave until 11:00 am so after breakfast we went for a stroll and I finally got to have a photo taken with the pidgeons in St Marks Square. They are crafty and won't come near you unless you have food. We also made sure we got to ghe shops that had masks we liked and took photos of the windows. They really hate you taking photos and there are signs everywhere. There is one shop I call cranky lady but unfortunately it didn't help turning up this morning as the lights from across the lane made too...

Jun 9, 2012 - Day 9 Bellagio

Day 9 Visiting Bellagio and Lake Como First town we stopped at on our journey was Argegno. We first thought about taking the ferry to Bellagio from this town but there was only a 3-hour limit for parking and after our experience the day before we did not want to risk getting another parking ticket. We wandered around the town and got a gelato, which was delicious, and Stephen took some pictures. There was not a lot to see in the town and after we talked to another tourist we decided to head up the road to another small town where we could...

Apr 21, 2012 - Water Touring Lake Como

What a spectacular day! The sky was clear, the sun came out, and the rain stopped. It was a perfect day on Lake Como. Temperatures started in the low 60s in the morning and climbed to the mid-70s by mid afternoon. The sky stayed clear and the sun drenched everyone with welcome rays after 2 days of dreary, rainy cold. We met up with our tour guide Donald at 9:00 and walked with him down to the piazza where he gave us a little introductory talk, then we wound our way along the passarella along the lakeside to the ferry area. In the ferry area...

Jul 10, 2011 - Weekend in Bellagio

Saturday, July 9th & Sunday, July 10th After overnighting in Milan near the train station, we said ciao to Milan for two days and headed to Milan train station for an hour ride to Varenna and the Lake Como district. We encountered a second scam when a seemingly friendly fellow offered to order our tickets from the automatic booth. He quickly claimed our change for his efforts and we were too dumbfounded to protest. The train was a decrepit and crowded with weekenders and day-trippers, but once we got a glimpse of the lake we were rewarded....

Oct 5, 2010 - Bellagio, Lake Como, Italy

Tuesday, October 05, 2010. The sun is out!!!! Boy, have we missed the sun. We are seeing mountains we didn’t even know were there. The true beauty of Lake Como is finally here for us to enjoy. So we decided to explore Bellagio. The south end of the lake looks like the legs of a man walking (the legs are the water). One travel journal says that Bellagio is where the crotch would be. So we drove 26 miles down the outside of the eastern leg and up the inside of the leg where we found Bellagio. (This is getting strange.) We parked at the...

Jul 1, 2009 - Bellagio by day

This is what we saw when we woke up today: Since we heard the view could get even better, we saw two gardens today. The first was the Melzi Garden. Take a look: Melzi Garden is right on the lake shore and many famous people used to visit, including Napoleon. Lisa thought the gazebo, with the Alps in the background, looked like it was from the Sound of Music, and then she saw a statue that looked like Mr. von Trapp. Lisa likes Mr. von Trapp. We then had our first pizza of the trip. I'm sure there will be more. Here was our...
