May 25, 2018 - Trulli scrumptious in Alberobello, Italy

Luckily, our unhappy immigration officer let us board the plane despite a "bad stamp" from Palermo Italy (see our Malta entry for details). We bid a very sad farewell to both our wonderful friend Hef and the lovely island country of Malta. Despite all kinds of shenanagans on the computer involving combinations of ferries, trains, and buses, by far the easiest, cheapest, and most cost-effective way to get from Malta to Bari was a quick Ryan air flight. The challenge was getting from the Bari airport all the way to Alberobello in an...

May 16, 2018 - Polignare a Mare and Alberobello

Wednesday 16th May: Our first visit today was to a local modern oil mill of the Mancino family for olive oil tasting where we were shown how to taste it “properly” and all the beneficial properties were explained. The more peppery the oil, the higher the level of antioxidants. Then we drove to a nearby family winery, Terra Jovia, where again the process of production was shown. It was housed in an old villa built by a monk and included a tiny but beautiful chapel. In the surrounding gardens, we sampled one of the wines. The main wine of the...

Apr 30, 2018 - Bob and Jan join us ...

Another beautiful morning and I sit up back behind the pool to read my book with a cup of coffee. Gail is, at least I thought so, still asleep but apparently, I made to much noise this morning moving things to the shed. She just hadn’t decided to come out of her room yet. We head into town to meet Gabry for a coffee at L’Altro in the sunshine. A catch up on our latest saga with Aria Internet, which we have being trying to cancel for almost a year. What a scam, having to pay for an internet provider that never gave us great service and now...

Apr 21, 2018 - Back to chores .... but in glorious sunshine and heat

This is work week so not too much exciting, but it is the necessary evil when you open your holiday rental home. So, a few bits at IKEA but not all what we were looking for … we need some form of storage unit for all our new linen as Villa Plus requires double the towels both inside and pool and we just don’t have room inside for that. Hopefully Leroy Merlin will have an option. Back in time for lunch in Alberobello and as it is a beautiful day we sit outside on the terrace at Il Pinnacolo and chat with two couples from Utah. The town is...

Apr 16, 2018 - The Beatons have arrived

Saturday we all agree with the beautiful sunshine a nice long walk is in order. That will help clear the heads and deal hopefully with some jet lag. We get the required 10,000 steps for Gail and then head into Locorontondo for lunch. It is still one of the cutest towns perched all in white on top of the hill. From the right road you can see the ‘round’ old town perfectly. After a short wander through the labyrinth of streets we enjoy antipasti and fave e cicori at another favourite restaurant U Curdunn. A light dinner is all we need, and...

Apr 16, 2018 - Italy here we come ...

Well for those you read my journal regularly and have been wondering where the next installment was …here is the story. Having completed our first week or so at the trullo I had written and was ready to publish the next installment of our trip journal. Then I had a catastrophic Travel PC failure. At the time of this writing it is still stuck in recovery mode, I have paid for recovery from Microsoft but so far to no avail … and at best it may work again but everything on it is lost. Unfortunately, that included the blog and the instructions...

Nov 2, 2017 - Italy - the final countdown

We had gone into Paco for snacks and wine and stayed too long so Thursday morning we are both not feeling 100%. We meet Gabry for coffee and she has kindly prepared paperwork for us to cancel Aria. She has prepared the cancellation letter and the post office paperwork to register the letter. This all works fine but the bank not so much. Gabry has written out that we want to stop the direct debit. As usual a visit to an Italian bank is long and complicated. In the end it is not possible only Aria can stop the direct debit … crazy. Let’s see...

Italy Fall 2017

Oct 28, 2017 - Adorable towns and big competitions

Today we awake to a real mist again and it is cooler than it has been. Gabry is supposed to come up to take some new pictures of the outside for the real estate page. We have had a leisurely morning all staying in our rooms till 8 am. Although Terry lounged to more like 9. I think she was just lying there till she got an over 100 point Word Chums word against me! Gabry has not arrived by 11 when the sun breaks through but just as well as with the mist the pictures wouldn’t be great anyhow. Ed takes the opportunity to glue and bang back the...

Italy Fall 2017

Oct 21, 2017 - The gangs all here

Susan and Cor’s flight is going to be an hour late so they will be late for lunch. So Gail and I head into town ourselves. Today we are going to go to Casa Nova which we haven’t been to in few years. It is down very steep steps from the main trulli street into was likely once a trulli storage room. It is a great spot and the food still excellent. Fave e cicoria to share, grilled giant prawns (always messy to eat), insalata mista and patitine fritta. We get back before the girls arrive but not too far ahead. Gail whips up a small platter of...

Italy Fall 2017

Oct 15, 2017 - Shopping, lunches, Paco wines and more shopping

I can’t believe we are on our second week already. Today is market day in Alberobello but we get a late start. Let’s just say that I had to go into Gail room at 9:25 to wake the princess up. To not give her too hard a time it is incredibly dark in our rooms with the shutters closed and of course being so rural it can be very quiet. I have a bit of a sore head today but not from wine but from the annual bang of my head on the top of the doorway because I didn’t duck properly. You’d think after all these years I would learn but then I don’t...

Italy Fall 2017

Oct 5, 2017 - Puglia ..here we come again

Off to Italy again via Air Transat into Gatwick. As the flight to Italy is very early Wednesday am we have booked ourselves into a Gatwick hotel for the evening. Bob and Jan have done the same to spend the afternoon and evening with us even though they are not headed to Italy till October. A somewhat uneventful flight...not the most comfortable and they screw up Gail’s prepaid for meal of lamb. Instead she gets some unappealing lasagna and then they offer to replace with Moussaka which takes another 45 minutes only to still be frozen on...

Italy Fall 2017

Jun 3, 2016 - The gangs all here

Another week begins with another beautiful day although a tad breezy. We move our stuff around to the twin room in anticipation of our guests. A late breakfast to set us for late lunch in Brindisi. We haven’t really explored Brindisi so we will do that prior to going to the airport to meet Dennis and Anita. After a later than planned departure we decide to try a different route to the coast, after all how lost can we be…we’re in southern Italy. Well the construction diversion didn’t help and we find ourselves outside of Ostuni at 2:30. Best...
