Mar 15, 2012 - On the road again

Thursday after breakfast we left Rome in the morning rush hour with the almost flawless navigation from Doris the GPS. Without her it would have been tense, very tense, very, very, tense. But it wasn’t. Our destination was on the east coast in Pesaro and Robert had a 3 pm appointment, so we couldn’t be late. That meant driving straight there with lunch at a roadside café eaten in the car in the parking lot. Our journey east took us up and over the Apennine Mountains, peaking about 3000 metres and through a lot of tunnels. Each tunnel...

Saturday 24th September 2011 Weather:-24 degrees and beautiful Ancona, Italy. Ancona, our stop today was a lovely little town, easy to get around in and we were given a useful walking tour map at the port. You can walk up to the Cathedral on the hill in about 20 minutes so that was our exercise today there were also some Roman ruins nearby. We had our breakfast and lunch in the La ‘Brassiere’ and are more than satisfied. You can have breakfast lunch or dinner there and the food is fresh, plentiful, good and with lots of variety. Tea and...

Sep 26, 2010 - Cruise - Ancona

4. September 26, Ancona, Italy We went to bed last night advised that our first tour (Ancona) had been cancelled (not enough English speakers took up the offer). Not to worry, we jump off the ship and grab a tourist map and head off. Along the way we find some ancient Roman ruins that have been unearthed during some construction work, a number of nice spots for photos and of course the local Chiesa (Church), actually we visit two churches. As it is Sunday everything bar the cafes and bars a re pretty much closed. Mass is in service in one...

Aug 12, 2009 - 12th The City of Venice and the Heat…

Yes you guessed it another early start this time ive got a banging head ache, the local plonk was so cheap we bought a couple of bottles last night. Yeah great, we finished them both plus all our beer. We left the delightful little campsite on the Island and headed for the ferry, we joined the queue and were soon aboard. Whilst queuing noticed black gloop on hand - the gear knob had melted in the sun! Bit of duct tape we were sorted! We were aiming for a motor home park at the ‘Tronchetta’ of Venice we planned to park Myrtle safely and take...

May 20, 2009 - Ferry from Ancona to Patra

5/20 - 2:36 I'm on the ferry to Greece - getting to the ferry was probably the hardest part of this trip so far. I'm currently nurturing a grudge against Ancona - okay, not really, but I am considering this a cautionary tale of future avoidance. The train station doesnt make it easy to find the bus tickets, the buses don't make it easy to figure out where to go, you can't buy ferry tickets the day of departure from a store front location or from the departure point, and the port is not easy to find. But I survived and by the way my lack of...

Jul 14, 2008 - Ancona, Italy

I had to take a ferry to Ancona, Italy spend the night then take another ferry to Split. I spent a night in Ancona waiting for the ferry to Split. Ancona is mainly known as a major ferry port but I wandered around. That evening there was a huge storm with lightning and heavy rain. The first rain I had seen in 2 months! The storm caused the ferry I was on to be cancelled so when I appeared at the ferry terminal the next morning there was chaos! It took me quite a while to find out the problem and then a while longer to figure out what their...

Nov 4, 2007 - Ferry to Olympia

We left Venice today, and travelled down to Ancona. We knew we were catching the ferry overnight to Patras, but we were so surprised at the size of the ferry. Its more like a cruise boat. It is so nice, and we feel so spoilt. The boat is fully equipped with shops, swimming pool, restaurant, bar, casino, cinema. They are all minature size, but never the less they are aboard the boat!!! The rooms are of good size. We are surprised that you can constantly feel and hear the engine running, it feels a bit like a vibratron machine, and sounds...

Oct 17, 2007 - Pesaro

Ciao Tutti! Pesaro is amazing! People are so great even through our inability to communicate with each other. Paul's cousin Lorenzo is taking english and has been our translator for the most part which has been a godsend. Monday night we went to Carlo and Maria's for dinner (family.) They came to Canada to visit Paul's family in 1986 with their daughter Franchesca who was 17 at the time. It was a great visit ...Franchesca came over too with her husband and daughter who is 15 ...they had a whole album from their visit to Canada when Paul and...

Jun 27, 2007 - Ferry, ferry, land

We woke up aroudn 5 am and realized the sun was just comming up so we headed to the other side of the boat for a good view of the sunrise. We waited for quite a while and it never seemed to come. Also, the wind was soo strong it was difficult to stand outside without the shelter. We gave up and went back to catch a couple more zzz's. When we got up we headed back to the self serve restaurant to grab an early morning breakfast. Jaycee was soo excited beacuse they had cereal with COLD MILK!! It was fantabulous! This was the first time in...

Jun 18, 2007 - Journey to Urbino

Well, after a long day's journey, I have finally made it to Urbino. Although it was hard, it was not as bad as I thought it was going to be. I have certainly gotten to practice my Italian lately, since no one here or anywhere close speaks ANY English. I took a train from Florence to Bologna, then from Bologna to Pesaro. Fom Pesaro, I took a bus (a first for me in Italy) to Urbino. The trip was beautiful! between Bologna and here, I saw nothing but countryside, full of fields of sunflowers and lavender, and huge expanses of vineyards. And it...

Apr 1, 2007 - Ferry from Patras to Ancona, Italy

We are including this section primarily for those folks from BC who have a great point of reference for ferry travel! The ferry trip from Patras, on the north coast of the Peloponnese to Ancona in the middle of the east coast of Italy, takes about 20 hours (leaves at 5:00 p.m. and arrives around noon the next day). The Greek Ferry system has a great plan called "Camp Aboard" for motor home owners: they have set aside a separate deck for us, provide electricity, washrooms and hot showers and we sleep in our campers instead of having to pay...
