Sep 1, 2012 - Last Night In Italy: Ancona seaport

I have spent two night in Ancona after taking a 3 hour train ride from Fossacesia. This is a major seaport for fishing, cruise ships, and ferries to Croatia and some of the Adriatic Islands. I take a fast ferry (so hoping this isn't run like the one in St. Croix!) to Split, Croatian tomorrow. Ancona has some historic things to see, and of course the typical Italian plazas, cobble stone streets and nice shopping. The best thing was meeting Canadians, Lena and Roxanne at the hotel at breakfast. We spent the day together and was really nice...

Jul 9, 2012 - cycle to San Pietro a Sieve, trains to Ancona

Monday 9/7/12 cycle to San Pietro a Sieve 30ks trains to Ancona Pete was sooo slow getting packed up today, so Nickie left him to it and had Coffee and croissant at the camp café. Pete eventually turned up and we got to talking with a Canadian couple who are motorcycling in Italy, they told of some beautiful, unspoiled, non-touristic little villages they have visited …. Of delicious meals, of spending afternoons at centuries old family run wineries, they just oozed with the enjoyment of it all….we looked at their amazing photos!....Nickie...

Jun 21, 2012 - Sirolo to Ancona

Erdemli to Tasucu update Thursday 21/6/12 Sirolo back to Ancona 26ks intense heat and busy traffic. Woke up again at sunrise and the campground was silent. Aahh… enjoyed the peace unti l we heard a squadron of lawnmowers????...then from around the point of the bay came 10 fishing boats close to shore. We packed up intending to get away early but the heat was fierce already at 8am. We overheated just getting up the steep driveway up to the village. To avoid yesterday’s hills we took the very busy and narrow road at the base of the hills. It...

Jun 20, 2012 - Ancona to Sirolo 24ks

Wednesday 20/6/12 Ancona to Sirolo 24ks very hot and hilly Even the locals are complaining of the heat. We left the hostel later than we wanted, but we figured that 24 ks shouldn’t take long. We didn’t bank on the “rolling hills” to be more like mountains, climbing to 240m in about 6ks, great views though….then many ups and downs in the countryside…lovely to hear the birds. Many road cyclists looking very light and speedy in their lycra (and no baggage)passed us in the opposite direction, we exchanged waves, they must think we are crazy....

Jun 19, 2012 - ferry to Ancona

Tuesday 19/6/12 onboard ferry to Ancona Italy, arrived 5pm Our 24hr ferry trip went smoothly, nice to sit and relax. Not many passengers so we had peace and quiet. We put out our rollmats on the rear deck and slept OK, from about 11pm, after new passengers and vehicles came onboard at Corfu. Watched the sun rise again and the heat began almost immediately. Nickie did a lot of reading on her e=book. Pete did his reading on his phone. We didn’t have time to buy extra food before we got aboard, but we made our own version of Bahklava, leftover...

Jun 18, 2012 - and then to Tuscany

Today we drive up through Tuscany. A little sad to be leaving our apartment. Not quite as rugged as the previous couple of days – much more agricultural. The scenery still stunning. We do two separate drives one from Montepulciano to Montalcino. Then from n Giovanni to Asciano. And finally the Via Chiantigiana, Castelmuovo Berargenga to Impruneta. Each stage, the country varies but still retains an agricultural feel. Lots of small villages we visit on the way – the usual narrow streets and great views. Our accommodation is part of a...

Jun 17, 2012 - A view of Umbria and Le Marche

Off today to the area of Le Marche and the Adriatic coast. A lovely drive, we reach the beach at Elipidio by lunchtime. Megan and David have a swim – the water apparently quite warm. People everywhere cooking themselves in the sun. Umbrellas everywhere, and like in other parts, they belong to the attached restaurants. We follow the coast for a while but only see the sea in patches so we head inland for our return drive. Quite rugged mountains here and, we can see from the signs that there would be quite a bit of snow in the winter. The road...

Jun 4, 2012 - Loreto and leaving!!! :( another OMG!

I awoke feeling a little down.....neither Laura nor Giacomo wanted me to leave! I would have stayed another day, but Italian superstition is that traveling on martedi (Tuesday ) is not permitted! :).....that would have meant I stay until miercoldi (Wednesday)! I woke up very early and got the Atlas out, plotting my intended next ffew weeks. I decided on going to Pescara for a few days, take the train to Civitavecchia, hopping on a ferry to Sardenia, then ferry back to Genoa! I felt settled, as I had a tentative plan!! Laura and I ran some...

Jun 3, 2012 - Casa, camminare, and Civitanova!!!!

I walked this morning before Laura and Giacomo got up. The wine and late night caught up with us all. We decided to stay in; Laura, watering the plants and catching up on chores and me, packing, getting laundry together, adding text to journal! We were going to Civitanova later in the day to walk, meet more family and have dinner with Angelo and Mariaellia! I was still undecided on my next destination...earthquakes were trembling in the north so Bologna and Rimini were out. I was getting a bit ansio (anxious) because the trip was winding...

The Calderoni Matrimonio was the absolute best!!! Who would have ever thought that the weekend that I planned to be in Ancona....this huge event would be happening!!! Laura took me to her friend so I could get my nails done and pedi.....after my morning walk and shower! We missed the ceremony, due to distance and they were not planning on going anyway. Got prissed up and Giacomo thought we both looked lovely! We drove out in the countryside and met up with Alessandro and Mariaellia, Laura's brother and wife! We were the first to get to the...

I awoke this morning early and io camminare for over an hour (walked)....found a great uphill workout, refusing for my kilograms to increase! Espresso, shower and Laura and I decide to go to the outdoor market! I purchase a pair of walking shoes, having to retire my Walmart sandals that look Moto brutto! (ugly!!!!!).... My clothing attire has been just short of finding a "date"! We then went to the seafood company that Luciano works at, and by the way Giacomo sells his vongole to! The Calderoni, still in the fish business after a century!...
