Apr 16, 2012 - Flying to Milan

On our way to Milan. Dutch came over and gave us a ride to the airport. We are applying the lessons we learned form last trip to keep our bags small and few. We are all packed for 6 weeks in two suitcases and two carry-on bags. Flew to Newark in an uneventful flight, had a small layover, then headed out to Milan. We were flying business class, which was very comfortable--good food, good wine, and a comfortable flight. We were in one of the quietest first class cabins in a long time. Maybe because they were flying to Milan, the Italian...

Mar 31, 2012 - "scusi"....."prego"

Last night i awoke at 4am and decided to Skype brother Steve! How cool it was to see him, talk to him, and catch up! Fell out again and slept pretty darn good in this little twin bed, windows open, and cool air filtering in! They have a very nice breakfast set up, included!, and the best damn espresso.....for me double shot, 2 of those and then a cappuccino to take up to the room. No doubt the jet lag, time change caught up with me and I was feeling it this morning! Headed out to Viale Papiniano for the largest street market I have ever...

Mar 30, 2012 - Treking Milan!

I awoke this morning....updated you regarding moving to a hotel, and getting to know the city! Well my friends, my hotel is in a excellent location, both room and the hotel itself, being steps away from the piazza de duomo!! It sports a little twin bed, small table, and full bath....bidet and all!! LOL! It also has open windows that pigeons like to roost and scare the hell out of you when you poke your head out! I checked in, and hit the streets....visited 2 churches, both of which candles were lit for both my daddy and my little pat! Of...

Mar 29, 2012 - Arrival!

Arrived in Milan after a semi-stressful flight- due to the fact they changed my seat to 31b.....and anyone that has flown with me KNOWS I like the front of the plane! Dealt with it with a glass of vino and a tiny pill that put me to to sleep for a good part of the trip! Arrived in Milan, headed for the "treni" and now I sit on the malpensa express to stationze cordona. The pic I took on the train is truly not my best shot! But due to the long flight, hell, I am feeling pretty darn relaxed. After walking around for about an hour looking for...

Mar 19, 2012 - Milan

Back on the platform ready to go to Milan I once again met up with the couple from Australia so we sat together in the same carriage as the train took us along the shores of Lake Como. I had no idea this Lake was so large. It seemed to go on forever from one beautiful village to the next. Arriving in Milan seemed like a let down after all of the magical scenery that I had been exposed to. We all walked out of the station together to the taxi ranks where we said our farewells and I walked on to my hotel which was just around the corner. The...

Sep 23, 2011 - Our last week begins

Our last week begins... Today we were up early, breakfast, packed up, and then off to Versailles. A train ride, a tram ride, and then another train ride put us out there about 10:00 a.m. Let's just say it is BIG...really big. Just going through security was a huge deal before you ever get inside! Had a miscommunication with a guard and we exited before we ever saw anything! We tried to explain to several guards/guides that we had not seen any of the house, yet they would not let us back in. Finally, one lady understood enough Englais...

Sep 16, 2011 - Milan Sept 16, 2011

In the morning we took a nice walk and visited Santa Marie Segreta church. It has a lovely courtyard in the middle. We went on a tour in the afternoon, visiting the Cenacolo, home of Leonardo DaVinci's "Last Supper", attached to Santa Maria dell Grazie. We had tickets to see the "Last Supper". The area is very secure. You have to enter through several chambers, waiting until the doors to the next chamber open, finally leading into the room in with the painting. It is painted on a whole wall. It has recently been restored. We were allowed...

Sep 14, 2011 - Somme Lombardo

We arrived in Milan in the morning. We found a nice little hotel with a free shuttle to and from the airport in the small village of Somme Lombarde about 20 minutes from the airport. We arrived a day ahead of our travel companions, Marty & Ron, and planned on meeting them at the Milan airport the next day. The weather was perfect, warm, sunny, so we strolled around the small village during the day. The hotel, Tre Leone, had wonderful hospitality. We had a delicious late lunch of spaghetti, fresh tomato and fresh basil at the hotel...

Sep 5, 2011 - Lucerne, Switzerland to Milan, Italy

Monday, September 5: Left Lucerne, Switzerland and headed south into Italy through the magnificent Gotthard Pass. The narrow roads were insane with sharp turns and switchbacks. The fog was very thick on the Swiss side of the Pass and we were all concerned that we would not be able to see the breathtaking views, let alone continue safely. However, when we started to descend into Italy, the clouds parted and the sun was brilliant, revealing the most beautiful valley below. We spent some time in Lugano, Italy on the way to Lake Como. Lots of...
