May 5, 2010 - 'Citta Alta'-Bergamo Italy

Wednesday 5th May 2010 Weather:-Rain-15 degrees Bergamo, Lombardy, Italy-B&B Entro le Mura Bergamo (population 120,000) is an extremely pretty old town in Lombardy and is located on the edge of the Bergamasque Alps. This City's location is set on a defensive hilltop and in 1561 AD the citizens of the town started to build the very thick, stout walls that have protected it for centuries; nowadays this historic part of town is known as the 'Citta Alta' (upper town) and that's where we are staying in a little Bed And Breakfast called 'Entro le...

May 4, 2010 - Einhoven to Bergamo with Ryanair

Getting through security at Eindhoven Airport was a saga as most people had to take of their shoes, belts and jackets also computers had to be unpacked and as they were nearly all packed in a bag within a bag this was not an easy thing to do especially as we were all juggling our various belongings around us. Ryanair seems to be all bark and no bite—if you do the right thing that is. We had arrived early and were the first to drop off our bags and had very courteous and friendly service. We also saw that people were carrying on board bags...

Nov 6, 2008 - BEFORE LEAVING

Dec 23, 2007 - Christmas (and no snow) in Bergamo

We arrived in Bergamo to find that SADLY there will be no snow for Christmas. For some strange reason it is snowing all over the south of Italy and not the north... Anyway our B&B is nice, out of town in the hills, which means a bit of a walk into town (But probably a good thing, because of all the pasta I have been eating). Bergamo is made up of two towns, the medieval upper walled town and the lower new town. The upper town is very pretty with cobbled lanesways and a beautiful cathedral. We spent Christmas Eve just walking around town,...

May 3, 2007 - Italy, Bergamo

My flight to Bergamo, near Milan, was at 6.45am so Jaon and I had a very early cup of tea before I taxied to the airport. The flight was delayed an hour as there was problems with the flight plan but I had three seats to myself so I lay down and got some more sleep. Arriving in Italy was Ok as I had a hostel booked and fairly good directions on how to catch buses there. The heostel was very clean and tidy and huge. But the rules were a bit unusual from other hostels I had stayed at. The was DEFINITELY no boys and girls in the same rooms and...

Apr 21, 2006 - visiting my hometown

Arrived today in Avio, Italy, the town where my great-grandfather (Angelo Rudari) was born. Beautiful, quiet little town tucked away in the mountains. Didn't manage to run into any family while we were there, but did see a WWII monument with Dominico Rudari on it, and our waiter had a friend named Giorgio Rudari. Will post pictures as soon as we can find somewhere to upload them.

Mar 7, 2005 - Bergamo the great!!!

So we jumped onto a train from venice and headed to the city of Verona, stated as the source of inspiration for shakespeare' s Romeo and Juliet. A nice town but a shit hostel that locked you out from 9am to 5pm, was freezing, full of wierdo's, made you drink coffee out of a cereal bowl and had showers just like a prison. So we went around the town and ran into the Italian pheneomena of Mondayitis. Everything is shut on a Monday. This would not be so bad if it was not for the fact that every other day they all shut early or for three hours...
