Sep 27, 2015 - Cinque Terre - The Italian Riviera

Today, we started the day with another wonderful free breakfast in the hotel! Then, we drove 2.5 hours to the coast to Cinque Terre. Cinque Terre is 5 beautiful towns (Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, and Riomaggiore) snuggled into the cliffs along the coast. The highways were full of tunnels and sharp hairpin curves. We arrived in Levanto at about noon and found the parking lot across the street from the train station. We had to pay for parking which was not the amount it said it should be. It kept inhaling our coins! We...

Sep 7, 2015 - Refugees, traveling in the wrong direction

September 7-8, 2015 Captain logbook, day 5, day 1 @ sea After we checked out at Villa Angelina @ 10:20, we drove along the Lago Maggiore to Verbania to join the Autostrada E26 towards Genova. First we had to refuel the car. I discovered that my gas tank had become bigger, not too much but anyway, instead of 64,3 L, it had a capacity of 65,7 L, huh, WTF?! The first obvious sign that we'd entered Southern Europe!!! And then.....We discovered, we didn't surrender the key of the room at Villa Angelina, so we had to make a vuelta and drove back...

Jul 22, 2015 - Day Nine: Riomaggiore

After all our hiking I definitely slept well and was ready for another beautiful day in Cinque Terre, maybe with a little less walking. We were all set for the markets at Levanto and walked down to the train station to buy our tickets. We double checked the platform because we kept getting it wrong. At the correct platform we had just missed a train and had to wait about half an hour for the next train and of course by the time the train came the platform was full and so was the train. Some people got off and some got on, but of course even...

Jul 21, 2015 - Day Eight: Riomaggiore

Well my clothes successfully dried overnight, except for my denim shorts which because they are so thick will take a little longer to dry. So this morning we did the usual, got up, got ready and headed over for breakfast. At breakfast I looked up a train and the next one we could get to Manarola was 10:05am, so we had about half an hour to spare. We quickly used the wifi to check if we had any messages and then we walked down to the station to buy our ticket. We had to buy a Cinque Terre multi service ticket so we could use the trains and...

Jul 20, 2015 - Day Seven: Riomaggiore

What a difference it makes with cooler weather overnight. I had the best sleep I've had since we arrived in Italy, we even slept in till about 9:00am The hostel includes breakfast which is a bonus, so I had yoghurt with muesli, a croissant and a very strong coffee. After breakfast we used the wifi to plan out our next few days in Cinque Terre. We decided that we would spend today in Riomaggiore exploring the town, tomorrow we will hike between the five towns with swimming along the way and on our final day we will go to Levanto to the...

Jul 19, 2015 - Day Six: Venice to Riomaggiore

After a very restless and hot night I finally cooled down as the sun came up and my alarm went off. We got dressed, packed our bags, checked out and started walking to the station. We were thankful we'd chosen an early train to catch as at 8:00am it was already starting to heat up and the streets were empty making the walk much easier. At the station we grabbed something to eat and waited for the platform number to appear on the board. At 8:46am I went to ask the man at information desk what platform the train to Milan was departing from as...

Jun 21, 2015 - Day 27 Manorola, venazza, Monterosso

Day 27 Manorola 21 June 2015 off to Monterosso, venazza, and riomaggiore Had a long sleep. Until. About 10am when the neo ours started thumping around. We have been quite exhausted the last few day squeezing every last drop out of our holidays. Today we got up, paid our accommodation and then decided to jump on a train for venazza to the west. However the double decker trains were so packed that we decided to head east to riomagiore. Cit was a good move. The train East was empty and the town I was small and pretty. We headed for a small...

Jun 20, 2015 - Day 26 Manorola

Day 26 Manorala, cinque Terre Saturday 20 June 2015 late night last night, early start today! Woke up at 5.30 and dived into the shower before driving the hire car to Lenate airport for return. Cerys had a bad night, so she tried to get some more rest before giving up and starting to get ready for departure. The drive to the airport was uneventful. Arrived at the airport just before 7 after fuelling up at a nearby station. Avis was closed, so I had a coffee to pass time to 7. When no one showed, I dropped the keys in the early return slot...

Jun 19, 2015 - Day 25 Genoa day trip from Milan

Day 25 Genoa Friday 19 June 2015 Big day folks! Big day! Cerys and decided to check out Genoa on the south coast of Italy. We knew it was a port city, popular with cruise liners....but that was about it. So have rental car, will travel! Cerys and I plugged Genoa into the find it for us thing in the car, and voila! Follow the arrows! The drive was fairly quick....Genoa is 150kms away and the autostrasse has a 130km limit....but the problem with the road is that you can't see what you are driving past! The guard rails all sit at eye...

Jun 19, 2015 - Campiglia to Riomaggiore

We take to the trail today to walk from Campiglia to Riomaggiore, the first of the Cinque Terre or 'five lands'. This is a pretty easy hike for us, considering the hills and heat we've done, and nice under sunny, skies and ocean breeze. Of course it starts with a climb, and finishes with a long descent over the ancient stony paths and steps. Somewhat strangely, in the middle of our trail is a public exercise circuit with stations such balance beams, rope ladders and stair climb station! Considering what we're hiking over, we find this very...

Jun 15, 2015 - Hiking Monterosso to Vernazza, Cinque Terre

Riomaggiore We arrived yesterday by train from Milano. The train trip was made more joyous by sharing a cabin with a delightful older Italian couple - Antonio and Maelina. Antonio spoke a little English and Maelina none - although she was a deeply intuitive woman who somehow understood our limited ability to communicate. We communicated by wild hand gestures, a lot of laughter and even sang Dean Martin's 'Volare' together. It's true - Deano bridges cultural differences. She sang me an Elvis song in Italian and completely won our hearts. We...

Jun 9, 2015 - Lucca - Cinque Terre - Santa Margherita Ligure

We checked out of our hotel and drove to La Spezia to meet our local guide and catch a boat that would take us to Cinque Terre. It is somewhere I have always wanted to see so it was a very exciting day. There are 5 villages that make up Cinque Terre and we disembarked at 3 of them - Manarola, Vernazza and Monterosso. They were beautiful little towns and in Monterosso we had lunch and tried the local specialty - seafood! We had Spaghetti Seafood which came out in a frypan and had prawns, pippys and mussels and we tried the local white wine....
