May 27, 2016 - CINQUE TERRE. WHOA! Back in Time 14 Months. My last month (rch) "Living" in Italy, 2015. Chee!

Welp, it is May 27th, 2016 and I am now "Living" in Bergen, Norway anxious to post some current journal entries/photos from here until June 14th, when vagabond up to the Nordjiord and my ancestory land I visited in 2004. Here are photos of THE CINQUE TERRE. IN 2004, I had 3 major reason for a 2-month 12 country backpack/tain trip. 1. To meet 3rd cousins and visit ancestorial sites in Norway (3 sides) and Sweden (1 side) of my families. Also, to go to the returning of the Olympics to Athens, Greece. 3. To sightsee through Scandinavian and...

May 21, 2016 - Genoa Nervi - meeting day

Day 3 Genoa Nervi After a better night's sleep and a hearty breakfast Ian and I spent the next couple of hours putting our bikes back together. So far it seems that both bikes got here without any significant issues. A test ride later in the day confirmed my initial impressions. By the time we had assembled the bikes, tidied the room and taken our bike bags down to the garage the time was close to noon so we decided to take a walk down to the 'beach' with our smuggled breakfast rolls and have our lunch while watching the waves. Passing...

May 21, 2016 - Complete the Walk of Cinque Terre

Today we headed back to Corniglia to complete the walk to the last town. First we walked around Corniglia and had breakfast. Then walked the blue path to Vernazza. This path was much gentler than yesterday. As soon as we found Vernazza Elton was hungry again and we stopped at the first little restaurant on the edge of a cliff and had a pasta dish with pesto. Fantastic. A walk around town and then on to the next town. Again the path to Monterosso was easier than yesterday but my legs and butt are definitely getting a workout. Nothing a bowl...

May 20, 2016 - Cinque Terre

Well today started out just like you thought.. yes we got lost again. How hard can it be for the GPS to get us where we want to go. We put in Riomaggiore and took us to a dead end then wanted us to go up a steep incline the was wet. There was no way we would make it, nothing could. So it took us back to the same dead end. We then followed my guesses and got behind a bus. I said that it must be going to Cinque Terre so just follow it ,,, and it did. We drove to Riomaggiore and could find a place to park so we went back to La Spezia and got...

May 20, 2016 - Milan to Genoa Nervi

Day 2 Milan to Genoa Nervi As usual I had a disturbed night. I managed to sleep about 4 hours before waking at 1:30 after which I dozed on and off until 7:00am. Ian and I dressed and partly packed before heading down to breakfast at 7:30. The breakfast was not too bad but, because we had arrived just after the 7:0oam rush, there was a shortage of bread and cups. Eventually this was remedied but I was starting to suffer withdrawal symptoms before my tea arrived. As we had till 12:10 before our train journey we decided to head into the town...

May 19, 2016 - La Spezia

Today we woke to pouring rain. Had a shower and was drying my hair and blew the fuse. Gave up looking for fuse box and went downstairs for breakfast. Had a great little breakfast in their lounge area. The hostess let us hang out while it rained and we looked on line for our next lodging. We found a place in La Spezia.. We loved the name and the location looked good. So we booked the "Jolly Roger" for two nights and headed in that direction. We again thought the avoiding the tolls would give us some great views. Wow did it ever. We went from...

May 1, 2016 - Two beautiful days in Cinque Terre

Yesterday was a lovely day for a boat ride, and that is what we did. The boat left Monterosso and took us to each of the other villages except for Corniglia, which has no boat dock. It must be reached by train or walking trail. So we went to Vernazza, Manarolo, and Riomaggiore, as well as Portovenere, another village that is not a part of the Cinque (5) Terre. From Portovenere, we took another boat which carried us on a 45-minute tour around three nearby islands. In each village we had time to explore, take pictures, people watch, and in...

Apr 17, 2016 - Heading south and south and then further south…………..

We have spent the last week travelling at a relatively leisurely pace through France, the largest country in Europe, some nights staying just one night and others 2-3 nights. We drove from winter to summer in 2 days. Highlight of the week has been another 3 wonderful days at Camping le Pastory in the village of Bedoin at the foot of Mont Ventoux. There we reunited with the great campsite owners Jean-Baptiste and Ann. Sorry to leave, but only until the next time, or until the very tasty Mont Ventoux wine runs out………. We managed to fit in a...

La Dolce Vita

Oct 28, 2015 - Yet another exciting travel day!

On our last night in Venazza we chose to have dinner with our new friend, Susie, the artist. She closed her gallery a bit early to join us as the tourist season here ends next week and business had already tapered off. Susie had moved to Vernazza 14 years ago and has established herself nicely with the locals. We had a marvelous dinner, but it was late and very dark for our last jaunt up the mountain. Scooter Boy led the way. We figured we would have no problem, because we figued we might see the lights of oncoming cars as we ventured up...

Oct 26, 2015 - Next, they climbed the mountain...,

The morning was bright and beautiful, yet again. Ever since we arrived in Italy the weather has been perfect. Everyone is so surprised, but being the sunny kind of people we are, we took full credit. (Please Lord, don't strike me dead. We are just kidding!) Anyway, Scooter Boy and Shifty Sally make their way down the mountain, yet again, pausing long enough to have a cappuccino and a croissant. We jump the train, ( we love these trains,) and make our way to Riomaggiore, the southernmost city in the Cinque Terre. On a train it takes only...

Oct 25, 2015 - And so they left the mountain.....

When we left you last, we had just had the most terrifying ride of our lives up the mountain to our beautiful little house. Mind you we can see to Greece from here. In fact, we heard their is a planned space shuttle expected to land next year right next door. Funny thing is, we are still not to the top of this mountain, but for me we are. close enough. You might also remember that we had no food up here. It is now 2 1/2 days later and Slick has eaten all of the toothpaste, wrestled the last biscotti from my hand and has now started to eat...

Oct 2, 2015 - The Mediterranean & rain!

Hi all, On Thursday we headed out on the train for the coast of Italy on the Mediterranean Sea. We are staying in a tiny hotel up high on a cliff overlooking Riomaggiore in the Cinque Terre (or the 5 lands). There are 5 small fishing villages perching precariously on the cliffs. Unfortunately there have been floods here recently and most of the walking paths are closed. We arrived in a few spots of rain along with many tourists and took a bus up the very steep hill. The forecast was not promising but so we set out straight away to see as...
