Apr 22, 2018 - Where it all began! Columbus' birthplace, Genova, Italy

Our ship originally was scheduled to dock in Genoa (Genova) but it was changed to Savona. Undeterred, we decided to take a train from Savona to Genoa. The disembarkation process was very simple and we found an English-speaking information office right at the port. She gave us a map to the train station and with plenty of time to spare, we decided to carry our backpacks through the town. What a nice place! We stumbled upon a flea market along the main street and enjoyed checking out Savona's version of sell-able junk. After determining which...

Nov 27, 2014 - Genoa, Again

Thur. 27 Nov. 2014 Weather:-It’s Raining, Again Genoa, MSC Sinfonia Suite 1014 10:00  17:00 7h We changed cabins today and that in itself was not a drama as we had packed the day before and our cabin steward just took our possessions to the new cabin while we were out during the morning. The day was bleak but we have to expect that on this side of the world at this time of the year so Ray, Herman and I just went for a walk around the port area to stretch our legs a bit. We have had very smooth seas since we reached the Mediterranean so we...

Nov 17, 2014 - Sinfonia, 1st Sea Day on way to Malaga

Mon. 17 Nov. 2014---Weather:-20 degrees/Sunny---MSC Sinfonia, 1st Sea Day We were lucky again yesterday because the cabin that we have chosen afforded us priority boarding and I needed it because the chaos at Milan station, all the walking we did around Venice and me not sleeping to well had left me utterly exhausted but a nice soak in the bath relieved tired muscles, gave me new life even to the extent that when the music started in the Manhattan Bar last night my feet started dancing but alas, Herman was exhausted too so bed beckoned us...

My little Quicksilver wheelie/backpack suitcase has been travelling with us since 2000 and has been on my back up and down the metro stairs in Paris and the over the bridges of Venice and transversing the cobblestones everywhere on this side of the world but bringing the rubber boots and Herman’s suit sealed the...

Nov 15, 2014 - And on to Genoa...Finally We Made It

Sat. 15 Nov. 2014 Venice to Genoa Weather:-17 Degrees/Overcast Ciao, Venice, thanks for some of the most wonderful memories that we have gathered here over the years. We left no time to visit Doge's Palace (Palazzo Ducale) as we were busy doing other things and we had been there twice before so all who want photos and my reviews of Venice (which I rate as ‘Fantastical’) you can see them on our ‘Herman and Judy Paris2Rome’ journal (top of the front page of this journal you can change to earlier journals) Venice info starts on the 20th Sep....

Apr 28, 2013 - Pisa to Santa Margherita

Early to rise and travel north towards Pisa. Along the way we stop at Montecarlo in the Provence of Lucca for lunch. It is a working farm with olives and wine, a wonderful shop and a fantastic restaurant...Fattoria il Poggio. We had a brief explanation of the olive processing but it was raining so we didn't go to the fields; ok with me. The lunch was very good and plentiful. We had 5 wines to be tasted and I have to admit, they got progressively drier and drier and I liked each less and less. After lunch we finish our trip to...

Mar 2, 2012 - Genova

We arrived in Genoa at around 3pm. We decided to take the coastal road, as its nice n calm and mainly LEVEL, However after taking hours n hours just to get from one town to another, we decided to take the autostrada, which has many statuesque bridges(eeekkk) and tunnels and scary high roads, however since the bulk of the journey was passing from one tunnel to another, it was bearable. Tolls - yes those dam money spinners , they come in all shapes n sizes, the French so far are the most expensive. Some times there is a "toll troll" sitting...

Sep 21, 2010 - Our Day in Heaven

Today by far was the best day on our entire vacation. I think I may even go out on a limb and say it is the best day I have ever had on any vacation. Today we rented a car and drove into Tuscany. We were fortunate enough to be able to rent a convertible which James was very excited about. We started the day driving to San Gimignano. The first part of the drive was a little industrial and generic but then out of nowhere the countryside appeared. I have never seen anything so spectacular in my life. The thing that gets me is that the area...

Sep 20, 2010 - Cinque Terre

Today we got a very early start! We woke up at 5:30 so we could make it on one of the 7 AM trains. We lost track of time and end up just making the last train out at 7 AM. In our rush we forgot our Rick Steve’s book, map and sunglasses, big fail! Despite the forgotten items we managed to survive the day just fine. We took the train to Monterosso which is the first city in the Cinque Terre. Monterosso was gorgeous. It was nice being there before the herds of tourists arrived for the day. We wondered around the town just taking in all the...

Sep 24, 2009 - Genova - Start the cruise - At sea

Slept in - such a GOOD sleep. After breakfast in the hotel it was off to the local post office to post home some acquisitions. Next it was time to say goodbye to our lovely hotel room and head off to the cruise terminal by taxi. The embarkation procedure was pretty shambolic, but we managed to negotiate it with ease and a smile. Balcony cabin - good. Time to explore the ship and get a brief orientation before we sailed from Genova at 6pm out into the mediterranean enroute to Malaga (Spain)- 808 nautical miles. We had an english speaking...

Sep 23, 2009 - Milan to Genova

The train arrived in Milan 1hr 20mins late so we missed our connection to Genova. Quickly scanning the board I found another one heading in more or less the same direction - a quick smile and sad face to the man on the platform and we were clambering on board. The train trip had interesting countryside - the sun came up bright red. When we finally reached Genova the first thing that we did even before we left the station was sit and relax with a coffee. Genova - Hotel Helvetia - I can highly recommed it - excellent hotel for the price -...
