Sep 24, 2017 - Italy - Santa Margherita and Portofino

A change of direction for us on this Sunday morning as we headed north-west to Santa Margherita and Portofino. We arrived in Santa Margherita to a light drizzle so Raimund suggested that the weather would clear in an hour so we should spend that time exploring to town before reconvening and hiking to Portofino. Santa Margherita is a pretty little town of about 10,000 people. As the gateway to Portofino it is a busy place. Several Lotus 7 sports cars buzzed through town. Many road bicycles were either racing or training for one and the...

Sep 23, 2017 - Italy - Volastra & Manarola

The agenda for the day was to take the train to Corniglia then hike to Volastra and Manarolo, where we had lunch and did some exploring. For the third day in row we made the trip to the station at Corniglia and up the road into the town. Here we found a different way out of town and continued a pretty steep climb to 361 meters/1,155 feet. Initially we were mainly in forested areas but when we got back above the sea the views became beautiful with the terraced vineyards, lemon groves and olive trees. It was just over 4 kilometers to Volastra...

Sep 22, 2017 - Italy - Corniglia to Monterosso

Today was to be a free day and we had considered taking the train to Pisa to see the famous leaning tower. Because we had been unable to do the Corniglia to Vernazza portion of the trail yesterday we, along with fellow traveller, Bruce, decided to do it today plus finish off with the Vernazza to Monterosso portion if that portion of the trail is open. We duplicated our trip from the day before obtained our trail passes at the train station when we de-trained at the Corniglia station. As it turned out, there was no problem at the trailhead...

Sep 21, 2017 - Italy - Corniglia and Vernazza

The original itinerary for the day was to take the train to Riomaggiore and hike to Vernazza but the trail along the coast between Riomaggiore and Corniglia has been closed for quite some time so we took the train to Corniglia instead. We started our hike at the station and headed up the road a little more than a kilometer will climbing over 100 meters in elevation. Raimund gave us some time to explore the picturesque town before heading out to the trailhead. On arrival at the trailhead we were shocked to discover that the trail was closed....

Sep 20, 2017 - Italy - La Spezia, Cinque Terre Coast & Monterosso

Today was an opportunity to get familiar with the area. We walked to the train station and took the train south to La Spezia. All of our days in the Cinque Terre would start with a train ride. Raimund would provide us with our tickets but it was our responsibility to validate them at the station. Since the rail line hugged the coast, which was very mountainous, most of the time was spent in tunnels, like a subway. Most of the openings were at stations; an opportunity to see the towns and often a bit of the sea. From the train station in La...

Sep 19, 2017 - Italy - Deiva Marina

We enjoyed, and were quite impressed with, our Ireland trip with Craig Travel. We keep our eye on their offerings and were attracted to "Hiking Cinque Terre and the Amalfi Coast" in Italy, September 18 to October 2, 2017. Departing from Toronto Pearson on Monday September 18 we arrived at Milan Italy's Malpensa Airport at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday. Our tour hosts Jon & Sue Gurr, who also hosted our Irish tour, found our tour operator, Raimund, who quickly got us on our bus for the approximately 250 kilometer trip to our hotel in Deiva Marina. The...

Sep 10, 2017 - Cinque Terre - Vernazza

On Thursday we bought a day pass for the Locale train and took ourselves off to, first, Riomaggiore which is the southernmost town of the Cinque Terre and the unofficial 'headquarters' as the National Park office is situated here. The town itself is quite a bit bigger than Vernazza but doesn’t really have any beach access. After wandering around in Riomaggiore for a bit we jumped back on the train and went three minutes up the line and got off at Manarola. We had lunch here at a nice outdoor seafood restaurant on a terrace overlooking the...

Italy - Finally!

Jun 14, 2017 - Cinque Terre, Italy

We took the train from the Santa Maria Novela station in Florence to Pisa and then changed trains to Monterosso al Mare in the Cinque Terre. Cinque Terre translates to "5 lands" and they lie on the Ligurian coast which is on the Tyrrhenian Sea. From south to north they are Riomaggiore, Manarola, Corniglia, Vernazza, and Monterosso. We had a nice house in Monterosso outside the tourist area. Extremely peaceful with a nice terrace. The Cinque Terre was made into a national park long ago to ensure preservation. Perhaps it's biggest claim to...

May 13, 2017 - Cinque Terre

Today we took the ferry from La Spezia around the point at Porto Venere and up the Italian Riveria to Monterosso, where we jumped off and explored. We then trained it back to La Specia stopping at the other towns of the Cinque Terre (5 Lands) on thr way back. Big day, lots of walking, and sectacular scenery. Still not sunny but not raining and not too cold.

May 7, 2017 - Portovenere/Monterosso, Cinque Terre

We travelled to Portovenere and explored Byron's Grotto from high above a medieval town. The views were spectacular. We then took a ferry that was diverted, due to high waves, to a train station that took us to the 5th hamlet in Cinque Terre, Monterosso. We were sorry to miss seeing the other four, because of the choppy seas. However, we enjoyed Monterosso. We visited a local wine shop and had seafood marinara in a local restaurant. Our tour guide Luca recommended this restaurant, and our lunch was delicious. After lunch we wandered back...

May 21, 2016 - Complete the Walk of Cinque Terre

Today we headed back to Corniglia to complete the walk to the last town. First we walked around Corniglia and had breakfast. Then walked the blue path to Vernazza. This path was much gentler than yesterday. As soon as we found Vernazza Elton was hungry again and we stopped at the first little restaurant on the edge of a cliff and had a pasta dish with pesto. Fantastic. A walk around town and then on to the next town. Again the path to Monterosso was easier than yesterday but my legs and butt are definitely getting a workout. Nothing a bowl...

May 20, 2016 - Cinque Terre

Well today started out just like you thought.. yes we got lost again. How hard can it be for the GPS to get us where we want to go. We put in Riomaggiore and took us to a dead end then wanted us to go up a steep incline the was wet. There was no way we would make it, nothing could. So it took us back to the same dead end. We then followed my guesses and got behind a bus. I said that it must be going to Cinque Terre so just follow it ,,, and it did. We drove to Riomaggiore and could find a place to park so we went back to La Spezia and got...
