Jul 17, 2018 - Day 2 Exploring Rome

After a rest at the hotel, the group went for a walk through old Rome. Our first stop was Trevi Fountain. Yes, I did throw a coin in the fountain. We travelled down some of the narrow streets of old Rome. We ended our walk in a beautiful piazza (town square) where had a delicious 7 course meal. The food here has been fantastic.

Jul 16, 2018 - Day 2 Coloseum

After a quick lunch, we went to the Coloseum. The Coloseum is 2000 years old. They are doing a lot of renovations to the site. But, it is amazing how much of the original arena is still standing. There is one of the original arches outside the Coloseum. The picture of enterance 53 shows an original part of the arena. You can still see the roman numeral LIII (53) over the archway. I climbed the stairs to the second level. I kept touching the wall as I walked completely the arena and thinking about all the people who had done the same for the...

Jul 16, 2018 - Day 2 The Pantheon

The Pantheon is one of a few Roman temple that are still intact. It was a temple honoring the Roman goddesses. The reason why it is still intact is because the Vatican converted into a church. They removed all the pagan symbols and statutes and replaced them with church symbols. The Pantheon has an unusual feature called the occulus. It is a hole in the ceiling which is the source of light for the temple.

Jun 7, 2018 - Three days in Rome

Sunday 3rd June: Siena to Rome. The Baltour bus was booked for 11am so we had plenty of time in the morning to get ready. The station was not far away but we had to take a taxi with our luggage. Once again the bus was very comfortable and in three hours we were in Rome Tiburtina bus station. We caught a cab to the hotel (Grand Hotel Ritz) where we were given an upgrade to a Junior Suite. So we have a bedroom with attached bathroom and a sitting room - very nice and comfortable. As it was Sunday, everything was very quiet and most shops were...

Jun 6, 2018 - Postcard 7 from Italy

Postcard 7 from Italy Wednesday June 6, 2018 Up early to Uber to the Colosseum and Forum. Unfortunately, we had the worst driver yet. On our way to the Colosseum he yelled Italian obscenities to all of the pedestrians for sleeping while they were walking. This crazy man actually hit a woman who was walking next to the van! Luckily, she was not hurt, but her boyfriend certainly gave Mr. Uber numerous hand gestures as well as choice words. Again, the lines were huge, but since we purchased tickets earlier, we were escorted directly to the...

I worked on updated my trip journal for all of you to read, while Bella did some drawing and watched a movie. I told Bella that when she was little, she thought Papa and I lived in the computer, because when they first moved to Texas, we...

Jun 4, 2018 - Postcard 5 fom Italy

Postcard 5 from Italy Monday June 4, 2018 We were up and out of the apartment by 8:00am and Ubered to the Vatican. Today we are touring the Vatican, the Sistine Chapel, and St. Peter’s Basilica. The throngs of people in line were staggering. We all panicked! I have never seen so many people in one place. Fortunately, Scott got tickets ahead of time and we navigated inch by inch to the correct line. We got our map and headed off. It was overwhelming; there was so much to see. Some of the rooms were filled with so many people, all I could...

Jun 3, 2018 - Postcard 4 from Italy

Postcard 4 from Italy Sunday June 3, 2018 Today, we took Federico’s advice and Ubered to Villa Borghese. There, we took a tram around the four miles of gardens, summer houses, and galleries. The gardens are reminiscence of an English manner, but in Rome. They are natural and somewhat unkempt. Here, there is a summer house for Pope Julius III, sculptures by Bernini, including his David and Daphne, a zoo, and galleries that house paintings from Titian, Raphael, and Caravaggio. Villa Borghese is the third largest public gardens in Rome. After...

Jun 2, 2018 - Postcard 3 from Italy

Postcard 3 from Italy Saturday June, 2, 2018 Today, we visited two museums, the Leonardo da Vinci, and the Roma museum. The Da Vinci museum was amazing and had numerous interactive pieces that Leonardo invented. Layne sang in the scuba room, which had great acoustics. Lyss posted that it on Facebook and it was tagged by the museum thanking Layne for her solo. It was a short walk to the next stop where we saw many paintings from the 15th-17th century. It’s unbelievable how much history surrounds you. US history pales compared to this, but...

Jun 1, 2018 - Postcard 2 from Italy

Postcard 2 from Italy Friday June 1, 2018 Bella and Easton slept in while the rest of us had breakfast at the hotel. Once everyone was up, we walked over to St. Peter’s to see if we could get in. The line was about a quarter mile long, so we revised our plans and headed over to the Spanish Steps. The steps were built in 1723 by Francesco de Sanctis to connect the Piazza di Spagna and Piazza Trinita de Monti. We walked down to Via Condotti, which is the Rodeo drive of Rome. Layne was so excited; she said it was like a museum for fashion. It...

May 29, 2018 - Postcard 1 from Italy

Tuesday May 29, 2018 We flew to Dallas and spent the night at a nearby hotel that had shuttle service to and from the airport. Wednesday May 30, 2018 We left the hotel at 11:00am to meet the rest of the group at the airport since our flight to Rome was at 2:00pm Once again, we were lucky that we both gotTSA Precheck, so we had a speedy entrance to our gate. The kids arrived shortly after. The excitement was contagious. I was feeling somewhat apprehensive, but was soon looking forward to all that was ahead of us. The flight was long, 10...

May 28, 2018 - Italy with Family

We are embarking on another exciting journey and will be traveling to Italy with Melissa, Scott, and Layne, Bella, and Easton for the month of June. One whole month in Italy! I'm a little nervous, but also very excited. Hopefully, I will be able to keep up my journal while on travel. We have gotten so much advise from friends, relatives, and strangers about this trip. Watch out for the gypsies, don't carry a purse with a shoulder strap, don't touch the fruit and vegetables at the farmers markets, eat lots of gelato, eat pizza, make an...
