May 10, 2019 - Rome - City tour

If you think a shoe box bedroom is small, try having a shower in their en-suite! Great fun! Our room in Budapest overlooked a beautiful garden, here we see only row upon row of window shutters - of different colours and styles. Last night we could leave the windows open - beautiful breeze, not noisy as expected, and the seagulls singing in the early morn. Set off to the Colosseum. It is massive and imposing. Completed in year 80 AD, it is one of the 7 wonders of the modern world. We were overawed at its size. There were thousands and...

Apr 20, 2019 - Olive Oil and Red Wine Who Knew.

Good Evening in Mandarin “one shug how” The same waitress quizzes me each morning and we add a new word. Today we are in docked outside of Rome and if your willing to take a 2 1/2 hr. bus ride one way or the train on your own you can go into Rome. Keep in mind it is Easter weekend at The Vatican. Since we have been there before we opted to go to Tuscany. There was a stop in town where we had cappuccino and what appeared to be round crescents covered in brown sugar crystals. In visiting the shops we managed to buy blackberry jam, a print...

Today I learned to say good morning and thank you in mandarin. A Chinese man said good morning to me and I wanted to say it back in Chinese. “Zow shung how”. Thank you is Zie Zie . We played battle of the sexes trivia. D was a hero because he new the name of Barbies sister and knew what it meant to be black flagged in an Indy race. Women are only ahead one point. We have been told not to save seats at the shows. Tonight at the ventriloquist show, a woman tried to save 6 in the row in front of us. A man walked up and said he was the ships...

Nov 15, 2018 - Rome, Italy, Day 4

Today was the Vatican Museums and the Sistine Chapel!!! It was wonderful!! Not many people were there and we took our time just taking in all the beautiful works of art. Of course there is no way to see everything; it is just too huge. The pictures will show you a selection of things we saw - statuary, ceiling paintings, and the Pope's carriages and cars. The Sistine Chapel was the highlight! We were able to find seats along the wall and spent an hour looking up at the beauty. We had audio-phones that tried to explain the painting to us,...

Nov 14, 2018 - Rome, Italy, Day 3

Today, Luca our guide, takes us on a walk to the Jewish ghetto. The dictionary definition of ghetto is a part of a city in which members of a minority group live, typically as a result of social, legal, or economic pressure. Of course during World War II when Jews were forced into certain parts of a town or city and were called ghettos, it became a negative word. In Rome, Jews were forced to live in this area, but then later were free to live anywhere and the walls and gates were torn down. Now this Jewish Ghetto has become a very trendy...

Nov 13, 2018 - Rome, Italy, Day 2

Our first full day in Rome!! We start out early walking, since old town Rome is not that big. We walk toward The Spanish Steps down Via Condotti. This street has stores of all the famous Italian fashion designers. Prices are out of this world. We arrive at the Spanish Steps. The monumental stairway of 174 steps was built when a French diplomat gave money to have them built in order to link the Spanish Embassy with the French Church. Of course there is much more to the story, but suffice it to say they could have been called the French...

Buonasera from Rome, Yesterday we ended up walking over 22 km! It started with a walk through Trastevere. Then we made our way up the hill to Piazzale Giuseppe Garibaldi and enjoyed a great view of the city. We carried on along the path, then down the hill and finally ended up in Vatican City. While there, we figured out where we needed to go the next morning for our visit to The Vatican Museum. Then we headed back across the Tiber River stopping for lunch and a well deserved rest. In the afternoon we ended up in Piazza del Popolo, climbed...

Oct 3, 2018 - Naples to Rome

Buonasera, Yesterday we took the high speed train from Naples to Rome. It was quick and easy. What a great way to travel! We checked into our hotel which is near The Pantheon. Sharon and Charlie arrived about half an hour later. Yippeee!!!! After getting settled we headed out for a walk. We went in search of The Trevi Fountain but due to a glitch with our navigation system (had it on car instead of walking mode...oops), we didn’t find the fountain. So we stopped for pizza and regrouped. After lunch we found the Spanish Steps, went for a...
