Jul 19, 2009 - Isonzo Rivermouth and Upper/Lower Sauris, Italy

After a lengthy chat with Giorgio, our host, I found that the local tourist director was full of prosciutto. Not only was it difficult to go horse back riding it had to be booked well in advance. So the email that I had received saying no problem call when you arrive didn't quite work out. But despite this little set back we decided to head out to the nature reserve and check out the wild horses. We headed out early before the heat sent all the animals into hiding. This is a river delta that has been preserved on the edge of the lagoon that...

Jul 18, 2009 - Latisana, Italy

The apartment was fabulous! We thought we should do a little touring of the area and then hit that beautiful pool again. So we ate breakfast (the boys were thrilled with the little Italian Grandmother that kept bringing them more cappuccinos and Chaelle was thrilled with her 'Bambino Cappuccino') and headed into the local village of Latisana. Latisana was a nice little town with lots of nice shops and coffee stops so all were happy. I was tempted again by a few purse/shoe shops and managed to find a lovely little Italian Ensemble (you'll...

Margerm Europe 2009

Jul 17, 2009 - Latisana, Italy

Waking up a little bleary eyed from our late night cultural event we decided to tour around Shakespeare's setting for Romeo and Juliet. As it is purely a fictional event, Romeo and Juliet not the Margerm vacation, we thought it was pretty funny that an entire city was cashing in on a staged romance. We headed down town with great confidence that we might actually make it out of down town as we had explored every street several times the day before. Gord had been touring Italy solo so far so was naively unaware that Verona was a designer...

Apr 20, 2009 - Goodbye Italy

Monday 20th April. Coldest day for weeks and steady drizzle so cancelled walk into town that we probably regretted later. Took a ride up to a very pretty area near Tarcento where the Alps rise suddenly and near vertically from the flat plains that we had been in since Cattolica. Spring had certainly sprung as we passed gardens full of flower, wisteria, peony, magnolia, tamerisk and camelia. There is an air of wealth and general wellbeing in this region together with a pride and need for order. This is shown by the quality of the buildings...

Apr 20, 2009 - Udine

Sunday 19th April. Just an afterthought, the villa Pisano was the place that Mussolini and Hitler first met! Back to the present and left hotel Bristol this morning leaving several hardy Germans out by the pool catching the watery sun. It would not have lasted as it started to rain as we left the town. We took a leisurely drive along the coast to an old Roman regional centre and port which was one of the largest in Italy. Now it’s just a tiny village surrounded by the ruins left by succeeding generations of stone robbers. In the middle of...

May 2, 2007 - Trieste

We did not expect to stay in Trieste, it was supposed to be a connecting point to get us to Rijeka and the Crikvenica, in Croatia. Foiled by the May 1 holiday, we spent a very pleasant evening in a beautiful city that definitely requires a future visit. We took the train full of expectation, to Trieste from Bergamo. On arrival in Trieste, we went to the information office and asked about trains and buses to Rijeka. We were already pretty sure we'd be taking a bus, as the web and guide books all mentioned numerous buses per day. But not on...

173 Days From Home

Aug 27, 2005 - Ciao!!

I made it to Italy safe and sound after a long trip!! I had to catch a bus at 230 in the morning to get to the airport on time. I had a wonderful few days in London with my friend Drew (tons of walking!!), he has been a gracious host and very understanding. He went through a very similar situation when he studied abroad so it was nice to have him around to help me deal with the change, poor guy. Today was amazing, it has been so great to see Mita. I cant believe it has been four years since we last saw each other!!! It has been so much...

Life Abroad

Jun 29, 2005 - Day 26 - Rejeka/Trieste/Koper

Weird day, off the boat at 7:15am. Straight to the bus station, trying to get to either Koper or Piran in Slovenia. Couldn't be done. We could, however, go straight through Slovenia, and end up in Trieste in Italy, and then get another bus back into Slovenia to Koper. This is what we planned. The next bus to Trieste was at 12:00pm, so we killed some time in Rejeka wandering, shopping, and lots of nice coffee. Eventually we were on our packed bus to Trieste. If your geography is strong, you will know that Slovenia at this point is only...

Mar 22, 2005 - Trieste

Trieste surprised us. It is grand, with wide avenues and miles of palaces and palazzos. No tourists. Lots of students. Lots of history. Nice people. Not a lot of hotel space, and we got the last room at the hotel again. It overlooks a busy square, with intercity buses dropping people off and picking up all night. The room though was great, very old hotel with ultramodern makeover. The wireless keypad in th room let us control the tv, or surf the internet, but very slowly. I was solicited as I walked to the train station one night to buy...

Dec 20, 2004 - Roveredo in Piano, Italy

We spent Sunday morning finally doing our laundry. We put it off as long as we could. I know! Thats gross! But we did wash things as we went but the pants were a little bit of a problem to wash in the sink. So jonathan took us over to the base so we could wash all of our stanky ass clothes! But then we got a full tour of all the base. On Sunday afternoon we went over to check out Trieste, Italy. Mom and her family lived there right after she was born. Aparently everyone else remembers what it was like and she didn't. So going to Trieste was...

Dec 10, 2004 - Lauren and I go to Trieste, Italy

Lauren and I decided that we couldn't bear another weekend in Spittal and decided to use the train tickets that Ben and I bought to Trieste, Italy. It is on the Adriatic Sea, right next to Slovenia and Croatia on the coast. It took us almost an entire day to get there, and by the time we got there it was dark. The nice woman at the hostel came to pick us up. When we booked online, the hostel address said "Trieste," but actually the hostel was about an hour away. 40 min. by train and then another 20 by bus or car. The hostel is actually in a...
