Oct 21, 2019 - O Sola Mia!

Okay. Where did I leave off? Of course, Matera. It was amazing! We had a very special dinner our last night there at Dedalus which was such a beautiful restaurant. Before leaving we had a last look at Matera from the other side of the ravine, then a long drive south to see the Greek ruins in Pasteum. One of the three temples is considered the best preserved Greek temple anywhere. When the Romans came along they built around the temples instead of destroying them as they admired the Greeks. Then we drove on to Il Nido, a sweet little hotel...

Oct 14, 2019 - Syracusa, Sicily and Sorrento, Amalfi Coast, Italy

Today we travelled across the center of Sicily from Palermo to Syracuse. The interior of Sicily shows that Sicily is the breadbasket of Italy. Lots of citrus orchards, olive orchards, tomatoes, mixed veggies, and some vineyards. Lots of Eucalyptus and surprisingly Norfolk Pines. Arriving in Syracuse, we have a modern 3 bedroom apartment a short walk from the cliffs overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. Our sleep that night was not that great though. The lion roars kept us awake. Lions? Yep. We have a circus with a big top about 300 meters away...

Oct 7, 2019 - Day 17 Around Sorrento

Lazy day today as the forecast is for heavy rain and thunderstorms. We sure had both during the night. The forecast is better for tomorrow so we decided to have a chill-out day around Sorrento today and go to Capri tomorrow. We had a late start to the day with breakfast at 8.30...we were the only ones there. Then Jenni took the kids to the hotel pool and I went to the laundromat. We thought it might be nice to have some clean clothes to wear home. Jobs done, we walked down the road for a coffee and then went for a bit of a walk around town....

Oct 6, 2019 - Day 16 Napoli to Sorrento - afternoon trip along Amalfi coast

Last trip down the 4 flights of stairs....all 80 of them. We struggled down with our bags and set off for the nearby train station. Our host had given us the name of one which is about 650 metres from the apartment so we don't have to trek over town to get to Napoli Centrale. The station was much quieter than Centrale and even though there was a train due to leave at 10:09, by the time I'd bought our tickets, we missed it and had to wait for the 10:39 service. We piled on when the train arrived and took up two sets of 4 seats between us and...

Oct 2, 2018 - Day 19 - Capri

I'd checked the ferry times to Capri and we decided we would leave late morning. I wanted to let the kids have a bit of a sleep in, then breakfast and a visit to the TIM phone shop as I'm unable to send text messages. We finally for moving about nine and went to the breakfast room. I asked the waiter what food Riley could safely eat and when I showed him his allergy card, he gave him a big kiss and went off to the kitchen and came back with the chef. They walked Riley around and piled up his plate with what he could eat; too bad whether he...

Oct 1, 2018 - Day 18 - The Amalfi Coast

The kiddie winks weren't in a hurry to wake up this morning which is fair enough. They are getting a bit tired and we'd agreed on 9:00am for breakfast. Riley and I finally got there about 9:15, Sarah gave it a miss. We are off the Positano and Amalfi today on the bus. We headed to the train station as the buses also leave from here and bought all-day tickets which also allowed us to use the local buses and were on board and ready for the 11:00am bus. I'd done some reading on the journey so told the kids to sit on the right hand side of the...

Sep 30, 2018 - Day 17 - Naples to Sorrento

We didn't have to check out of our room until 12 so I let the kids sleep until 9:15. They are both a bit weary and we decided we weren't too keen to look at anything else in Naples so rest seemed a good idea. I woke them at 9:15 to have breakfast as it finishes at 10:00. May as well have not bothered a s Sarah had a bowl of coco pops and that was it. Riley had a little bit of sausage and egg. Kids went back to our room and I went out to find a working ATM. The one I tried last night didn't work. It still wasn't working this morning so went...

Sep 26, 2018 - Positano to Sorrento

Buongiorno, Yesterday morning we said goodbye to our hotel on the cliff side in Positano. You guessed it...we played the switch the bus on the hairpin turn game again but this time in reverse. However before we even left the hotel, there was drama. The first mini-bus showed up to pick up the luggage and the first 8 passengers. The only way this works is if the driver can park the bus as close to the hotel as possible with the back of the bus lined up with the front door so they can load the luggage directly from the lobby into the back of...

Sep 14, 2018 - Kick Off On Our "Boot and Ball Tour"

Thursday night was a very brief introduction to meet our "Bus Buddies". For the next 10 days we will be sheep gathering around our "Shepherd" Antonio listening to his words of wisdom through radio headsets. Friday morning - suitcases in the corridor by 6:30 - on the bus by 7:30. Allready this pace is too much. First stop is the Commonwealth War Memorial in Cassimo. A site dedicated to all soldiers who helped to fight for Italy. From here we drive to Pompeii. We arrive about lunch time. Quick bite to eat then we head off on our walking tour...

Sep 8, 2018 - Sorrento

After Pompeii we continued south and the next big city was Naples, which is on the Bay of Naples. The water was so beautiful as we looked down on the city and bay. But we were continuing just a bit further south and around the bay toward Sorrento. We stayed at a wonderful hotel outside the city that was right on the bay. Of course, I just had to go in the water, but that would have to wait for the following day, as we needed to get settled in our rooms and then get back on the bus to go into Sorrento for a few hours. What a gorgeous drive...

Jul 19, 2018 - Day 4- Sorrento

We spent the late afternoon shopping in Sorrento. Then, we learned how to make pasta the italian way. After our lesson the chef lead us to his garden at the back of the restaurant. We had another fantastic 6 course meal prepared especially for our group. Good thing we are doing alot of walking.
