Apr 19, 2009 - Pompei

Today we went to pompei. It was amazing, way bigger than i ever thought it would be. The ruins are very well preserved for how old they are. It was also really interesting to see there actual streets and there water fountains as well as the houses they used to live in. Most of the buildings are very well preserved and i could really get a feel for how pompei might have looked. And yes we did see the bones of people incased in the stony ash (Everyone that has heard i went has asked if ive seen them and there werent just people, but dogs as...

Dec 22, 2008 - Pompeii

After having a huge breakfast and packing our lunch we boarded a trian to Pompeii. It was only a half hour trip from Sorrento and the ruins are literally 15 metres from the train station! We entered the ruins at around 10am and paid for an audio guide, whcih was a really good idea. We were so excited and hadn't realised Pompeii was so big. We went crazy taking photos and walkign aorund looking at everyhting for about 3 hours before we got really tired. We persisted for another hour before heading back to thre train. Pompeii was excellent!...

Nov 23, 2008 - Pompeii and Naples

Saturday Novemver 8th So after leaving Vatican City we are off to Pompeii. The train ride has to be by far the most beautiful landscape I have seen. As we pass Naples it is the classic Italy seen, you have the Mediterrean Sea and then you have the city on the Penenisula (don't judge my spelling). When we get to Pompeii the weather is amazing but we come out of the train station and really don't know where to go so a cab driver takes us up to the ruins and we do the audio guide tour and walk around. It was amazing how preserved the ruins...

Oct 7, 2008 - Pompeii

Sharon Two thousand years ago, in a land far, far away (Italy to be exact), Mt. Vesuvius erupted and destroyed a little town called Pompeii. Today that little town is a big tourist attraction. That being said, we just had to see it.  At the entrance gate where we bought out tickets, I was concerned, because there were many homeless dogs. That is a big thing for me because I am such an animal lover, but soon my worried thoughts were erased by the wonders of Pompeii. It is amazing how well Pompeii looks after being burned to smithereens....

Aug 12, 2008 - Pompei

This morning we are having a leisurely morning. We are all just slothing around and enjoying a bit of R&R (we haven't had much of this since we started). I haven't eaten breakfast as I am feeling like a fat pig. ALl we seem to do is eat. Because of Tia and I it is impossible to just stop and grab a pannini on the run therefore we are stopping each day at restaurants where we can at least eat a risotto or salad. I am now feeling huge and am seriously going on a carb free diet when I return. We had a great night last night as we put the kids...

Ravi -- The ruins of Pompeii lived up to its reputation. Buried by the sudden eruption of Mount Vesuvius during ancient Roman times (1st century C.E., almost 2000 years ago) the city was pristinely preserved for millenia until finally rediscovered and excavated a few centuries ago. As a result, many of the structures, statues, monuments, temples, household items (and casts of people buried alive within ash and lava) survived to tell the story about this ancient world. Tim and I took a local comuter train from Naples to Pompeii, only half...

Jun 9, 2008 - Pompei

This morning we caught the train for a half hour ride to Pompei. We had reaaly been looking forward to this and were not disaapointed. On August 24, 79 AD, the volcano Vesuvius erupted, and buried Pompeii in ash and soot, killing 2000 people, and preserving the city in its state. Pompeii is an excavation site and outdoor museum of the ancient Roman settlement. This site is considered to be one of the few sites where an ancient city has been preserved in detail - everything from jars and tables to paintings and people were frozen in time,...

May 15, 2008 - Pompeii

On our way north we decided to call into Pompeii. It was somewhere I had always wanted to go and well, its meant to be the most visited attraction in Europe! For those of you who do not know, Pompeii was a town in South West Italy that in 69AD was buried by the erruption of Mt Vesuvuis. Because it was covered so quickly by the hot lava when escavated a lot of it was found in a very preserved state. Firstly I didn’t realise how old it was and its crazy how well it was preserved, like down to paintings still on the walls and the big...

Feb 10, 2008 - Naples, Pompeii and Sorrento

We had an early start today. We were supposed to be picked up at 6.45am for our tour. They arrived at 6.30am and we weren't ready. A bit of an argument flowed with the driver but he agreed to wait 10 mins. We were not impressed especially as we ended up waiting for half an hour in the cold bus until everyone else had been picked up.... Anyway, it was off to Naples, about a 2-3 hour trip. Had a quick guided tour of Naples - not worth seeing really, and actually quite grubby. Apparently there was a garbage collectors strike on and there were...

Dec 12, 2007 - Pompeii

Although I came here primarily to see Pompeii, I was less impressed with this site than Herculeneum. Pompeii is huge, street after street of it but it is mainly ruins and gets very samey quickly. I guess I was disappointed that there were not petrified bodies in every corner, in fact most of them are stuffed onto shelves in a caged storage area - very dignified. In amongst the "ruins" there are some much more interesting buildings but I found it difficult to work out where they were going to be. Two places that stood out were the recently...

Sep 23, 2007 - Assisi to Sorrento (Castellammare)

6am wake up call again - getting tired. Back of the bus today in the revolving system - like our own little apartment - great views and a chance for a siesta. drove through the vineyrads of Frascati. Visited the Commonwealth Cemetary at Cassino. There was a small private service happening - a group of fellow NZ service people. Very sad place - quite overwhelming. On to Pompeii for a 2 1/2 visit through the ruins. Next stop our magnificent hotel on the mediterranean in the Bay of Naples. Drinks on the patio over the water watching the sunset...

Aug 24, 2007 - Pompeii

Matt and I took a train down to Naples today intending to see Mt. Vesuvius and Pompeii. Both of which I have seen before, but I thought Matt would be interested in, so we made the long day trip (approx. the same distance as Calgary to Edmonton one way). Plus the train ride is very scenic through the country side and the Amalfi Coast. When we got off the train for Vesuvius there were scam artists everywhere trying to charge us €40 to get up the volcano. Deciding that was not a good deal, we moved on to Pompeii. Pompeii was amazing! The ruins...
