Oct 14, 2013 - The First Leg of the Trip Home

Here I am sitting in a hotel room in London after a hectic journey. The morning started out quietly when we had a leisurely start to the day before walking to the train. We were fortunate to have Business Class today from Naples to Rome and it was fantastic! Once in Rome we said good byes and Linda and Val went off to the Beehive, their hotel and I caught the next train to the airport. I thought I had a lot of time but the Lufthansa line up was very long and so was security. Finally through it and then my last Italian wine and salad at the...

Bella Italia!

Oct 13, 2013 - Seeing Naples in a Day

We woke up to beautiful blue skies this morning and a prediction of a hot day with high humidity. The weather focus was correct and by mid early afternoon we found ourselves in a very hot Naples. We managed to get an early train, still the same run down one but at least we got seats. The hour + ride included two groups of musicians playing for money, one man and his child playing an instrument and begging and two women also begging. It seemed like there was something happening at every stop. Otherwise the trip was uneventful and we arrived...

Bella Italia!

Oct 8, 2013 - Naples

While in Palermo Gerry began to get a nasty cold and Viv’s cough got a little worse than normal, so once we returned to the ship we did not do too much more. On arrival in Naples it was pouring rain and dark skies. We have been to Naples before and did not feel the need to rush ashore and walk around in the wet. However the skies did clear and off we went. Naples often referred to as a “gritty”city is famous for its history, architecture and pizza. The town is spread out before you as you enter the harbour area and it is quite a sight to...

Oct 1, 2013 - Praiano/Naples

As we sat waiting for our bus to arrive to catch to Sorrento, followed by the train to Naples, we discovered that there's never a dull moment. Here were two guys with 3 donkeys who were moving dirt from inside a building & into the back of their truck. They would take the donkeys down the stairs to the doorway of the building, load dirt into the packs on the donkeys, then ride or walk them up the stairs, up the road to their truck, then up the ramp into the back of the truck where they would unload the dirt into the back of their truck,...

Italy 2013

Sep 16, 2013 - Amalfi Drive & Pompeii, Naples, Italy

6:00 am came a little too early for my liking since I was still feeling the effects from my cold and also feeling highly contagious so I had a big decision to make – do I stay back on ship for the day or do I head out with the others for the tour we had booked. Curiosity about the tour won out. John & I popped another cold pill and headed down to the tour debarkation sight. As soon as the first words were out of our tour guide’s mouth, we were glad we had come along. In her strong Italian accent and timely comments, Manuella kept the...

May 30, 2013 - Naples

Naples is noisy and chaotic, and the graffiti EVERYWHERE makes the place seem scarier than it is. Our hotel was tucked way back into a nest of narrow streets. We would call them extremely small alleyways. The hotel itself was built during the 17th century and belonged to the last Archbishop of Naples in the Bourbon Kingdom, but it now only occupies one floor of the entire building. As we walked around even late at night, we never felt threatened. Families and students were out and about, and I loved the neighborhood bars that were walk up...

May 29, 2013 - Pompeii

We took a lovely train from Rome to Naples, stored bags at train station and continued on to Pompeii on a subway train that was worse than the worst I've ridden in New York City. Pompeii was awesome with the ruins, but I am so glad we saw the exhibit that came to Birmingham, because we saw more of what happened to the people through the road show than we did in Pompeii and the Naples Architectural Museum combined.

Sep 15, 2012 - Depart from Sorrento

Up at the crack of dawn and ready in reception to depart at 4.30 am .... yes EARLY! Our taxi is due at 4.35 am but hasn't appeared by 4.50 am. Rep is rung (3 times) and we are told that the taxi broke down and another is now on its way - why din't they phone? Second call to rep, still not arrived ... just 10 mins she says. Not to worry as check in doesn't open till 6 am ... so why did we have to be up at 4.30 am????? Eventually arrives at 5.20 am, no apology or explanation. Fortunatley the Hotel receptionist was indcredibly helpful and as...

Holden Holidays

Sep 13, 2012 - Naples Archaelogical Museum

What has happened to the sun? We awake to a dramatic thunderstorm ... no breakfast on the terrace this morning! Forked lightning, thunderbolts and monsoon like rain. At least it is still mild! Change of plan - we had intended to go to Nales on the ferry but it seems sensible to go by train now. The worst of the storm has passed but it is still raining, a bit less. Our shuttle bus driver kindly drops us really close to the station and we do a dash avoiding the puddles. Our train comes in and we step inside to find it awash! All the seats are...

Jul 5, 2012 - Naples, rhymes with staples!

As we stepped out of the train station in Naples at 11:50 at night we felt as if we had arrived onto the scene of a scary movie. The streets in front of us were small, dark, dingy and under extensive construction, a few neon lights from nearby businesses flickered on and off, graffiti covered nearly every inch of every surface, small groups of men lurked on street corners and in shadows, a few women dressed up for the town strutted around calling to anyone who would listen, and three cop cars with their lights flashing were driven up onto...

Who knew...

Jun 23, 2012 - Italy - Naples

15th June - 17th June 2012 We didn’t know what to expect in Naples. It contrasts in many ways from the cities like Milan and Florence. It doesn’t have the structure and order like the other cities but within the chaos there is something unique about the way of life in Naples. With a map in hand we strolled along the streets of the old city centre. The densely populated area was bustling with locals going through their daily routine. The streets were lined with small stalls and shops selling goods at very reasonable prices. We felt very...

Jun 21, 2012 - Naples

Heat wave hits Italy. A big news item. 37 in Rome but fortunately only 34 in Napoli. We are staying in Spaccanapoli. Narrow streets roughly paved with small cobbles, about 200 years ago I'd reckon. Teeming with life. Rubbish, washing hanging out everywhere, tons of shops - ghastly fried stuff and pizzas, but also excellent alimentari where the knowledge and love of food is as good as elsewhere in Italy, cheap sock and underwear shops merging with street vendors selling all sorts of crap, but with fish sellers among them. Decaying Spanish...
