Apr 23, 2010 - Day 10 - Amalfi Coast

We planned to do very little today, but since it was overcast and rather damp it wasn’t much fun sitting around the farm, so we embarked on a drive along the famous Amalfi Coast from Salerno to Sorrento. Anyone who has ever done this drive will understand completely that only the Italians with their abiding devotion to the saints would ever choose to build a treacherous stretch of cliff top road like this, let alone drive recklessly upon it, let alone in a bus!! The entire 50kms or so I spent either shaking my head in bewilderment at the...

Apr 22, 2010 - Amalfi Coast

Today we visited the town of Amalfi along the beautiful Amalfi coast. We started very slowly in the morning, but got our shit together and hopped on a bus for the 1.5 hour trip along the sea. The road hugged the cliffs the entire way. We cannot believe how the Italian engineers actually constructed the road. Turn after turn, we could see the water below us. a few times Michelle grabbed my leg and squeezed. Mind you, there two lanes of traffic, but really only enough for one on most of the turns. As our bus took a turn, it would blow it's...

Aug 27, 2009 - 19 Aug 09

19 08 09 – We have been racing between Ischia, Procida and Naples for a week or so now and we had a chance to sit on the transit dock in Capri for a couple of hours, so the boss took us in a taxi all over the island from Anacapri to Capri and back down again. Lunch at the most expensive hotel in Capri and possibly the worst lunch i have eaten this year. 21 08 09 - We were skirting the edges of the bay of Naples watching the fire take hold on the top of the mountain above Sorrento, (we could see it starting from the other side of the...

Jun 11, 2009 - Egypt recapped (very briefly) and Italy

Well I must admit that we have been a little lazy with this trip journal thing but that is because we have been go go go the whole time! Egypt was amazing and we would definitely recommend it to EVERYONE. We spent the first two nights in a five star hotel near the pyramids. The days were spent exploring the great pyramids of Giza and the Step Pyramid at Saqqara. We also did a city tour of the Citadel of Sal Addin and the hanging church. Then, we took an overnight sleeper train (which felt like a series of earthquakes over 10 hours and I am...

Apr 30, 2009 - Last day Amalfi

Thurs 30th April---Weather:-aprox.17 degrees-and it is beautiful sunshine in this paradise called Amalfi Rambling around Amalfi is on the menu today. After our internet stop and morning coffee break we decided to play dodgems (us on foot) with the cars along the road to Positano. In our bus travels we saw that there is a nice outlook about 800 meters up the road that would be perfect to take some photos of Amalfi on a sunny day. On the way we stopped to watch a construction gang----I had to make sure that Herman was not missing work too...

Apr 29, 2009 - cont. Ravella and Positano

Wed 29th April---continued:- Ravello and Positano (J) After our little stop at the internet point this morning we decided a change of scenery might be nice, not that there is anything wrong with the scenery around here. A bus to Ravello was achieved and the 6km long and 350 meter up bus trip again afforded us a lot of fun; this is the first time that I have been on a little bus that needs to do a five point turn to get around some of the tight corners but that is enough about that subject except for the fact that the bus drivers take it...

Apr 29, 2009 - Amalfi Cathedral

Wed 29th April---Weather:-we woke up to beautiful sunshine this morning (J) Last night we skipped home holding hands and jumping puddles; for a fleeting moment we felt as if we were children again—I say a fleeting moment for half way up the steps we had to stop and hold on to the wall to avert a couple of heart attacks! It is a grand feeling being over here. Tues 28th continued:- (J) After an unremarkable walk around Sorrento we lined up to take the bus home again (obviously we are not good enough tourist-or plain lazy ones-to find the good...

Apr 27, 2009 - Wandering around Amalfi

Mon 27th April---Weather:-overcast/15degrees It rained during the night so we thought that we would need our coats this morning but 15 minutes after going outside we were as warm as toast so back up the stairs we went for cooler clothes. We presumed that all would be quiet down the main drag at 8:15am but we were wrong as there were a lot more people out and about earlier than us. Even with the crowd it is very relaxing over here, we don’t need to be on our guard as we had to be in Rome. Most of the visitors sound like they are Italian...

Apr 26, 2009 - Rome to Amalfi

Sun 6thApril 2009 Weather:-Overcast 17-20 degrees Pick up car Rome Airport drive to Amalfi (302km) (2:56h) OH, WE FINALLY FEEL AS IF WE ARE ON HOLIDAY NOW. (J) The trip back to the airport on the ‘Leonardo Express’ went smoothly and after a 5 min wait we were met by the representative of EuroDrive. He drove us the 15km to their depot and within 10 min we were on our way—Herman driving along the A1 towards Naples to Amalfi. The first 20km out of Rome were a bit depressing, large square blocks of housing units all on top of one and other....

Apr 22, 2009 - Amalfi

The Amalfi Coast Road We navigated out of Rome and onto the freeway to make our way to our last Italian stop, the Amalfi Coast. After about 2 hours, our exit to the Amafi coast road came up and we braced ourselves. We had spoken to a number of people that had been here, the latest of which being Rex in Tuscany, and they all cautioned us about this unique and treacherous road. We had thought, how hard can it be. We had been driving in Southern France for several months where we had yet to find a wide, straight stretch of road. Well, we...

Jun 5, 2008 - Amalfi Coast

Change of plans. I was going to go to Foggia today, but plans did not fall through, so I decided to go to the Amalfi Coast. Took a train from Bari to Taranto, then Taranto to Salerno. From Salerno I took a bus ride to Amalfi. The ride was pretty intense! Mom I think you would have a heart attack! Narrow, winding roads right next to a steep cliff! It was a big adrenaline rush I just do not know how the bus drivers do it! A lot of honking the horn for on coming traffic and other cars and buses had to stop or back up all the time. A sight to...

Dec 28, 2007 - A day in Amalfi

From in front of our hotel we could take a bus back into Amalfi then transfer to others that would take us up and down the coast. In the villages, at street level, are shops, small and unique - some for meat, some for cheese, a lot of bakeries and others with a variety of things. Most, we would classify as Mom and Pop Shops. In Positano there are fashionable dress shops displaying designer collections that they are noted for, - way above our price range. On one of our trips into Amalfi we started up between the buildings in narrow...
