May 4, 2013 - Isle of Capri

Arrived in Isle of Capri this afternoon! Had a long flight to Rome, then a train ride to Napoli, then a boat ride to Capri! What a beautiful place. Sitting on our terrace relaxing now and heading to dinner soon. We are very tired, virtually no sleep on the plane, but we will catch up in a few days! We only have one night here and will be in Rome tomorrow night.

Dec 6, 2012 - Pompeii

One of the must dos of the region is to take a visit to Pompeii - the stuff of legends. To get there we caught the local train. Missed our stop. Got off at the next station. Caught a train back to the correct stop - or so we thought. In fact we caught the wrong train to the wrong station, which in fact was the correct station. Well, not THE correct station, but A correct station. Confused? So were we. Turns out Pompeii is serviced by two stations on separate lines. Anyway, finally arrived at Pompeii (quite a large town) and found our way to...

Dec 5, 2012 - Sorrento

We left Rome this morning and headed south for Sorrento, just past Napoli. Didn't take long to get back into the groove of driving on the wrong side of the road, in the wrong side of the car. Negotiating the Rome traffic wasn't as difficult as we thought it would be. Wasn't long before we were speeding down the autostrade. Hit the outskirts of Napoli after about an hour, and decided it was a good choice to bypass it - seems like it is a vast urban sprawl. Although, we did think the same about Rome until we went there. Maybe we should have...

Nov 15, 2012 - Napoli

Because we had already been to all the cruise sponsored sites offered from Naples, we decided to walk into the city to have pizza. Naples is where pizza was created and they are quite proud of their offerings. We walked along the waterfront a couple miles and stopped in at an interesting pizza parlor. We were not disappointed! I had a quattro fromagi pizza, and Mike had a margarita pizza. They were superb - best we ever had!!!

Oct 5, 2012 - Pompeii and the Amalfi Coast

Wednesday, October 3 - Thursday, October 4 Sperlonga to Pompeii Our tour guide cost nearly twice as much as our 4-star hotel and he was worth every bit of it. The hotel was not. Smarmy staff with fawning plastic smiles, a room with silly foo-foo extras like shower jets coming from 6 directions but no character--we could have been in Omaha-- in a dumpy part of town. Oh, right, Pompeii. Nothing but dumpy parts of town. Hawkers, and cheap guides mobbed the car as we drove in. We nearly kept going. When Dr. Gaetano Durante started guiding 30...

Oct 4, 2012 - Positano

We awoke to a beautiful sunrise over the ocean. Breakfast was once again on the balcony, a different one to last night and we ate breakfast as the sun rose higher in the sky and the heat started to rise. We wanted to visit Positano today which is 8 klms away on the road back to Sorrento. We were not lucky enough to be organised in time to catch the ferry that we wanted so we decided to go for a very quick swim. This was it my time to jump into 'the Med', bravery lacking I donned my togs and joined Mike to go to our motels private 'beach'...

Oct 3, 2012 - Amalfi

Today we leave Sorrento for Amalfi but we have enough time for a quick walk through the center of Sorrento. I must be honest I don't mind the walk down hill to the village nor the couple of klms to the center of town but I wasn't looking forward to the walk back. Sorrento is very picturesque, lovely old buildings and quaint streets but also the usual madness where ever tourists might possibly spend some money. One of the stores we visited had been in business 150 years it's a little different to back home. They had lovely inlaid wood and...

Oct 2, 2012 - Capri

Waking up in Sorrento this morning we were hoping to open the curtains and see blue skys and blue seas. Unfortunately this didn't happened, we had overcast skys and we crossed our fingers and hoped that it would clear before leaving for our trip to Capri. Our motel was high on the side of hill so we had to walk down to the township to be picked up, not a problem but I was not looking forward to the walk uphill in the afternoon. We boarded our bus and headed down to the harbour in Sorrento. It's absolutely beautiful. Looking back to the...

Oct 1, 2012 - Pompeii and Sorrento

If it's Monday this must be Sorrento...It. almost wasn't. Today we left Rome for a tour of Pompeii, Sorrento, Capri and the Almafi coast. We had an early start so checked out early from our hotel so didn't get breakfast not that we really needed it as lunch was to be included in our tour. It turns out that that was to be the least of our problems. When we arrived at the bus depot they wouldn't let us on the bus because we only had a voucher for our entire trip and not a voucher for each speific part of the trip. Not that they were worried...
