With the very first shreds of light, Milena’s engine came alive, and her crew was perched in place, as we began another day in our voyage back to France. Amazingly for us, the seas were once again, mildly inviting as we watched the coastline that we fought so hard to find yesterday, disappear off the West side of Milena. (pic) Me? I stayed in bed til 7:30a, so when I was totally up for the day, the sun was out, with mild breezes blowing in my face. When you, or me, as passenger, makes a crossing like this, there is really nothing crew...Jump to full entry
Haven’t managed gelato for breakfast, in celebration Calabrian style. But it will be gelato o’clock later in the day. Can’t get enough of this local bergamotto. Last nights dinner was scampi risotto with bergamotto. It is another beautiful day here. Our host, Pasquale, an unemployed architect, tells us about the impact of the GFC particularly in the southern part of Italy. There has been slow progress out of the economic gloom. Italy and Greece have taken in loads of assylum seekers. They are given 35€ per day. A lot are from...Jump to full entry
Oct 9, 2017 - Cakes and coffee !
Just a few pics FYI. And no, we ate only one cannoli, but a mini gelato at gelato o’clock. And did you know that gelato is really not served in the morning, as the gelato containers come out of the freezer and have to warm up a little. And so, the gelato vendors wouldn’t want to sell you a frozen hard gelato - would they? As for the tapware - did we buy it? You will have to wait and see.... Love Marco and Giana xJump to full entry
Oct 8, 2017 - Oh yes, I do like to be beside the seaside.............
We are enjoying a day of rest, along with the other Calabrians in Reggio di Calabria. The weather is delightful, about 22 and fine. Not much open here today, except for Duomo and Archaelogical Museum. Inside the Museum, there are two 190 cm tall, 150kg bronze statues, the Riace statues A and B. They are 450 years BC young! They just happened to be found by chance in 1972, 200m off Riace Marina in 8 m of water. They are the world’s finest examples of Greek sculpture. You have to stand in a decontamination room for 3 minutes before viewing...Jump to full entry
Oct 7, 2017 - There is a toe in the Italian boot
A solemn reminder of of the lives lost at Pompei, as I put my volcanic dusted black suede shoes on this morning. After checking out the washing across the street, and observing from above, the possible installation of the NBN in Naples, we squished into the lift and headed out into the street for Napoli Centrale station. Grabbed a proscuitto, mozzarella and percorino roll, remembered to validate our seat reservation, and jumped on the train for nearly a 5 hour journey down south. This is all new territory for us. It is looking good as we...Jump to full entry
Nov 15, 2016 - Reggio di Calabria to Rome to Amsterdam to Paris and to NY.
Tuesday, the big travel day back to the US: I woke up around 4:40am after my alarm didn't go off but the light on my phone did wake me luckily. Turning on Do Not Disturb on the phone disables the alarm as well which is not good. I got up and showered and dressed by 5:20. I headed downstairs to check out and was told by the guy that my room charge didn't go through when I originally booked it. I said it looked like it went through but he showed me a paper that said the charge didn't go through so I had to pay again for the room. Luckily, it...Jump to full entry
Nov 14, 2016 - Reggio di Calabria - The last day
Monday: I am again awoken by noise in the entryway at 8 - 8:30 so I laid in bed checking email and FB. Since I have 2 hours before checkout and pickup at 10:30, I take it easy getting ready. After my shower, I go have some breakfast, my usual of cereal, juice, a shot of espresso but the cake is gone this time! That's a bummer, it was a good cake and the other tenants must have eaten the rest of it. As I'm eating, a couple of women show up and they head towards the cleaning closet so I figure they are part of the other cleaning crew. When I...Jump to full entry
Nov 13, 2016 - Reggio di Calabria and Sicily
Sunday: I again woke to loud noises in the entryway around 8am. This time it sounded like a man and a woman having a kind of loud discussion. I got up and opened the shutter and saw it was sunny out at least so I showered and ate breakfast in the kitchen. The maid showed up and we again tried to communicate and had some success. Her name is Antenella and her father lives in Miami. Her sister lives in Spain and that was about as much as we were able to discuss. I finished up and went on my journey to Sicily, Messina more specifically....Jump to full entry
Nov 12, 2016 - Reggio di Calabria
Friday: I have not been able to call my Bed and Breakfast with the number that was printed out since they offered complimentary shuttle service. I instead asked a taxi to take me there and it cost me cash as he didn't take credit cards and there was no meter, so it was just a verbal quote. That was not a good start to my stay in Calabria and ended up being an omen of what was to come. I used the cash I had left which left me without any for food and I was starving. The driver was an older guy who didn't speak any English and didn't know...Jump to full entry
Jul 10, 2012 - Italy - Reggio Calabria
22nd June – 23rd June 2012 (Bed 49) Today we arrived in Reggio Calabria which is only 12 km away from where we will be catching the ferry to Sicily on our way to Malta. To our surprise, it was a very trendy and lively place. You are not going to believe this, but Arthur suggested that we spend 2 days here and do some clothes shopping. Yes, you read right, CLOTHES SHOPPING. Three months of wearing and washing the same clothes has taken its toll on them. Who am I to argue! We struck it lucky with our hotel which was located only a street away...Jump to full entry
Nov 3, 2008 - At Sea
Well not much to say today. Had the day at sea and just sat around talking to people we have met. We did wake up sitting just of the island of Sicily with a staff member talking on his cellfone on the top deck and waving to his either girlfriend or wife. We know this because we whipped upstairs to see where we were and saw him. Funny!!!!! Went throught the gap between Sicily and Italy which is big enough to get through and the captain went full speed we think because of the amount of water rushing through the gap. A couple of hours later we...Jump to full entry
