Cout...

Apr 20, 2008 - Mopeds, Temples & The Big Durian

As we made our way down from Mount Bromo, we met an Indonesian university student who would make the next several days infinitely easier and more enjoyable. Maybe it witnessing us pay twice the going rate for our bus ticket; maybe it was practice for his chosen profession of public relations; or maybe it was simply an example of the famous Indonesian hospitality that we had heard so much about, but had not yet experienced on our trip. Whatever the reason, our new friend Yayat took us under his wing during the trip from Bromo to Yogyakarta...

Mar 15, 2008 - Pangandaran and Yogyarkta, Java, Indonesia

Tuesday 11 March - Pangandaran cont.... It was Jana's birthday tday so after dinner at the hotel Andy, our tour leader, brought out a surprise birthday cake for her. She was delighted as were we when she asked us if we would like to help her eat it! Then it was off for a couple of liveners before heading off to the local karaoke bar. Now I have never done karaoke before and quite honestly thought that I despised it! However....... So, after God knows how many tunes later and having cleared out the bar, we croaked our final number -...

Second Time Around

Jan 13, 2008 - The Tak Saka to Yogyakarta

The train from Jakarta to Yogyakarta in west-central Java, is called the Tak Saka, the first named train we've traveled on. We arrived at the station at 7:30 for an 8:15 departure, grabbed a breakfast to go, and went up to the platform to wait. At 8:40 an announcement came over the loudspeaker, and everyone on the platform rushed from track 3 to track 4, leaving us standing alone. We wondered if our train had been switched, but when we asked, they told us no, still track 3. At 8:45, two men wearing train station overshirts came up, said...

Mar 25, 2007 - Yogyakarta

Hello everyone! Well we are in better spirits today! Today has been much more relaxing and the people of this city are really nice, we asked for directions to a art gallery and the guy actually walked us there (without trying to sell us sommat!) and let me tell you in places like this thats pretty good going!! Jog, as the locals call it, is a pretty bust city with a walled palace in the centre in which the sultan lives. We walked around it today and were treated to a gamelan dance show. This is the traditional dance of ancient times, really...

Nov 29, 2006 - Yogyakarta

Jun 13, 2006 - Earthquake relief, (Java) Indonesia

I've met up with a group called Australian Aid International and am now volunteering with them full time to help out with a local village mending wounds. Yogyakarta Java, Indonesia has been devastated by the recent earthquake and people here need all the help they can get, so I'm doing my best to help out. Over 6,000 people have died. I'll be here until the end of June unless I get the call to go to East Timur...where I feel I could be more effective, but until then I'm, we, are responding to daily calls for help from local villagers...ie,...

May 27, 2006 - 6.2 Magnitude Earthquake Near Yogayakarta, Java, Indonesia

SATURDAY, MAY 27, 2006. YOGYAKARTA AND JAKARTA, JAVA, INDONESIA. This morning, I was rudely awaken by the violent shaking of my bed and entire room at the losmen (guesthouse) where I was staying in Yogyakarta. At about 6 a.m., a magnitude 6.2 earthquake struck south of Yogya. The temblor lasted about 15 seconds. As I was still groggy and a bit shocked, there wasn't enough time to do anything other than lay in bed and hope that the building did not collapse on me. Fortunately, it did not. Being a resident of California, USA, where...

May 26, 2006 - Prambanan, Java, Indonesia

FRIDAY, MAY 26, 2006. PRAMBANAN, JAVA, INDONESIA. Even closer to Yogya than Borobudur is Prambanan, the grandest Hindu complex in Java. A half hour bus ride (Rp 2,000) along the main road northeast to Solo brings you to Prambanan, a complex of about 50 temple sites. The largest and most exceptional is the 47 meter high Shiva temple decorated with numerous Hindu deities. Like Borobudur, Prambanan was also built in the 9th Century AD, although about 50 years after Borobudur. The statue of Shiva stands in the central chamber, with the goddess...

May 26, 2006 - Yogyakarta

Hi alls, I know it is has been awhile since we last spoke but I find my self having way too much energy these days to sit still long enough to do an update. Mom and dad have been on my case, as well as Grandma so I thought I better let you know what we've been ups to in the last couple of weeks. Before we left Vietnam I heard of this active Volcano in Indonesia that was expected to erupt any time. I told dad he should look into to it to make sure it wasn't going to be near where we planned to go as I was not interested in meeting an angry...

May 25, 2006 - Borobudur, Java, Indonesia

THURSDAY, MAY 25, 2006. BOROBUDUR, JAVA, INDONESIA. Borobudur, a 9th Century AD Buddhist Temple, is one of central Java's main attractions (Entrance Rp 95,000 foreigners; Rp 9,000 Indonesians). About an hour's bus ride northwest (Rp 3,000) of Yogya, Borobudur is made up of six square bases and topped by three circular ones. Close to 1500 narrative panels on the terraces illustrate Buddhist tales and teachings. On the upper terraces, 432 Buddha images sit in their separate conical chambers.
