Apr 19, 2009 - Mount Bromo Volcano

Mount Bromo. Incredible. There are actually three volcanoes - Bromo, Kursi and Batok. What makes them spectacular is the way they rise up from the surrounding volcanic plains. They are picturesque beyond belief. We got up at 3:20 a.m. to take jeeps to a viewing point at Gunung Penanjakan (Gunuing is mountain in Indonesian). It was quite chilly at this time and altitude (just under 10,000 feet). The sunrise photo of Bromo, attached, may look dark, but soon after I'd taken this - at 5:15 a.m. - the clouds rolled in and the whole vista...

Apr 17, 2009 - Jogyakarta - Borobudur

Borobudur temple is quite spectacular. It is of Buddhist design, built some 1,200 years ago. From a distance it looks impressive, but close up it is even better. First you walk around three levels of carved stone panels. Then you get up on top and there are 72 latticed stupas - they look like bells. Inside each is a Buddha. It is considered lucky if you reach in and touch the Buddha's hands and feet. You can see from the photo attached that you need to be at full stretch, but I did manage it. This really is an awe inspiring monument. What...

Apr 17, 2009 - Jogyakarta - Prambanan

Prambanan temples. The guide books have beautiful pictures of multiple temples, people walking around their bases, descriptions as to how you can see various items inside each temple. It was only after I had paid my $10 entrance fee that the guide started mumbling apologetically about the 2006 earth quake.....and how the government was still trying to raise money to complete the renovations...and how there had been a problem with the cement - the original cement used in the previous renovations (50 years ago) was good, but the cement used...

Apr 17, 2009 - Gunung Merapi

Gunung Merapi (Fire Mountain) is a volcano with a long history of eruptions, most recently on my birthday, April 26th 2006. Everyone had been evacuated, so there were no deaths. You can't get close to the volcano as it is still considered active. But you can go to a viewing point and see it in the distance. Which is what we did on our tour. Unfortunately the weather was cloudy, so we weren't able to see Merapi, just some nice clouds. But I did (illegaly) take some nice photos of some photos taken at the time of the eruption.....attached....

Apr 16, 2009 - Train ride to Jogyakarta

8:00 a.m. train from Jakarta to Jogyakarta. I booked the top of the line "Executive" class - see seating photo attached. Not bad, although after 10 hours it was good to get off. The scenery is fantastic - Java is far beautiful than I imagined. I think it is the backdrop of the mountains and volcanoes, something you don't get in the the other countries in south east Asia. It's also a lot greener, especially with the rice fields. Probably the most beautiful scenery I've seen on the trip so far.
