Feb 19, 2013 - Bukit Lawang/Berastagi/Lake Toba

Reluctantly left Palau Weh, heading for Banda Aceh on the ferry. As we had a few hours to kill before our flight back to Medan, hired a (kind-of) taxi to drive us around town. He then showed us to an extremely battered, very ancient Bluebird (no door handles, no springs, everything that could be broken without actually disabling the vehicle was). Got in. Jul 9, 2012 - Sumatra - Day 22 - Tomb of Sidabutar Kings

We rented two bicycles and peddled 6km's into the town to Tomok, to visit the tomb of the Sidabutar Kings. Sidabutar is the ancient ruling clan in the Batak village. Jul 5, 2012 - Sumatra - Day 18 - Motorcycle trip around Samosir Island

Today we took a motorcycle trip around Samosir Island. When we set out it was close to noon and started in a counter clock-wise direction. Along the way we went through the towns of; Tomok, Lontung, Gultom, Nanrung Gu, Nainggola, Urat, Mogang, Pangururan, Buhit, Simanindo and Ambarita. Along the way, several times we stopped to take in the breathtaking scenery and stunning volcanic mountain views. The...

Jul 4, 2012 - Sumatra -Days 14-17 - Batak Cannibalism, Lake Toba!

Lake Toba is one of the awesome natural wonders of the world, it is a supervolcano. This is a crater lake so enormous it has an island almost the size of Singapore in its centre. The Toba caldera is the only supervolcano in existence that can be described as Yellowstone's "bigger" sister. The lake is 100 kms long and 30 kms wide, and 505 meters (1,666 ft) at its deepest point. Located in the middle of the northern part of the Indonesian island of Sumatra with a surface elevation of about 900 meters (2,953 ft). Lake Toba is the site of a...
