Sep 1, 2009 - Diving Bunaken - Day 4

What a change from last night! I’m writing this entry from a cubicle at an internet café and video game center at the Hyper Mall in Manado, and it at times seems louder in here than at a rock concert. This place is huge: there must be almost a 100 cubicles, and I would estimate 90% of them are packed with kids playing loud video games. Interesting to witness, as the hourly fee to use the computers here of approximately US$0.80 demonstrates a not insubstantial segment of the population possesses the disposable income to pass that kind of...

Aug 31, 2009 - Diving Bunaken - Day 3

I’m sitting here in the common area at the SeaBreeze Resort, and a makeshift band comprised of many of the Indonesian employees from here is currently playing a tropical island rendition of John Denver’s classic song “Country Roads.” Think Hawaii meets folk, and there you have it… Most of the band's songs have been in Indonesian or the local language here, but in any event, the musical backdrop makes for a very relaxing and enjoyable evening. It is our last night here at the resort and on Bunaken, as subsequent to our 2 dives tomorrow,...

Aug 30, 2009 - Diving Bunaken - Day 2

It is 9:30 in the evening here on Bunaken, and we are sitting in the common area at the SeaBreeze Resort. It was another day of good diving. And fortunately, when compared to how I felt after our dives yesterday, I feel great. We did 2 dives today, each lasting around 1 hour at the following sites: Buato and Mandolin. The marine life we saw seemed less bountiful than what we saw on our dives yesterday, but we enjoyed beautifully colored coral all along the reef here. We’ve got 2 more days of diving here, and the gregarious Australian...

Aug 29, 2009 - Diving Bunaken - Day 1

Tonight I definitely have a post-dive hangover. I feel lethargic, dehydrated and a bit achy. And I have only a small appetite, a rarity for me in my normal condition. Further, I slept all afternoon upon our return from 2 dives this morning. I’ve been trying to figure out the reason behind my condition, and I have my suspicions as to why I am in a post-dive funk. I like diving, but not the way I often feel afterwards. I guess this is a small price to pay for underwater fun... We began our morning not with diving, but with a boat trip from...

Aug 28, 2009 - Greetings from the Island of Bunaken

I am writing this entry tonight from the outdoor bar at the SeaBreeze Resort on the island of Bunaken, a small island a few kilometers off of the coast of Manado. We arrived last night from KL, and after spending the night at the Regina Hotel in Manado, we caught a local boat out here this afternoon. We showed up on Bunaken without a reservation, but thankfully we found space at a dive resort quickly. We have arrived at the height of the European vacation season, so lots of European tourists are here. Prices are higher than we would like,...

Apr 1, 2007 - Diving in Bunaken

After spending a couple days in Kuta after returning for the Gili Islands, I decided to head up to Sulawesi to do more diving. I found a plane ticket for $70 to Manado (flights are cheap in Indonesia and 95% of the planes make it), which is a short boat ride to Bunaken Island, a world famous diving spot. On my 1 am motorcycle- taxi ride to a hotel from the Manado airport, the first thing I noticed was churches. I counted 14 churches, of the Christian variety, which was a little surprising considering what a stronghold Islam has in...
