Mar 16, 2016 - Ferry back to Manado

3/16 Ferry back to Manado and back to Hotel Wisata We went to MickyDs while waiting for our room to be available (ferry got in at 10a.m.) Bon on internet looking for more info re: Athens and beyond. Spent most of afternoon at it. I went to Wisata and room at 3 p.m. where I slept until 5:30 not having slept hardly at all at Sea Garden. In the evening we walked to Mega Mall, ate at Pizza Hut and went to a movie, London Has Fallen.

Mar 14, 2016 - Ferry to Bunaken

3/14 Got up and out by 7:45 a.m. because we were told the Lion Air office opens at 8! NOT! So we had a buffet breakfast at the hotel. I pigged out (all you can eat for $8 US - you bet!). Omelette, pancakes, fruit, sweets.... We were able to book most flights up until we fly to Greece on the 30th. Very satisfying given the troubles we've had until now trying to book flights on line. Ticket 2 SUCKS as well as Nusa ticket! ___ Lion Air went easy - ATM cash to pay. Back to our hotel, walk to ferry by 1 p.m. - it didn't depart the dock until 2...

Mar 12, 2016 - Fly to Manado, N. Sulawesi

3/12 Bon spends a.m. doing more LP planning for onward. We leave via taxi (150,000 = $12 US) to airport at 1 p.m. 40 minute plane trip - up and down - still Garuda with squeezed in a box snack and drink, ha. We somehow won a lottery for this flight and were assigned 1st class seats, YES! Much more leg room. ___ Local Manado time is 1 hour back so we arrive before we left Ternate, ha! Bon read in LP that we could save $$ taking the local minivans to downtown - a short walk out of the airport area. Bon had consulted with the government...

Nov 22, 2011 - Goodbye Tasikoki

Sorry for the long space of time in between entries. There was a lot going on at Tasikoki. Most of which I will not write about in the journal as I only want to remember the good times. We had two very sad goodbyes (not the others were not sad). Janet and Rachael both had to leave earlier than expected. Rachael has gone home to receive some better treatment and hopefully be put on a faster road to recovery. Thankfully Nard and I had the chance to go to Manado and spend a night at the hotel with Janet. We went out to The Club and met with...

Oct 29, 2011 - Oh deer!

A few crazy events have occurred since the last time I wrote in this journal. First of all we were meant to move 14 Corellas into a larger aviary. However, the keeper misunderstood and mixed species. He also moved them by shoving 10 birds into a very small square box. During the move they attacked each other resulting in 3 severely injured cockatoos. I have one with a large lesion on the side of its neck and above its eye. One with large deep lesions on both of its legs. The last one has a wound covering the entirety of its chest, above the...

Oct 22, 2011 - Dance the night away

Had a great time out with the volunteers last night. It was nice to do something that seemed "normal" and just let loose a bit. Kent, Alexandra, Nard, Janet, Sarah, Dewi, Kelly, Simon and myself went out to Score a club in Manado to celebrate Simon's 20th birthday and a sort of good bye to Kelly. It was a great time! Simon was called Justin Bieber and pulled up on stage for a shot for his birthday. It was a little rough getting myself moving this morning though, but well worth a good time with some amazing people. We have had a slight...

Jul 7, 2011 - Bunaken Bust

Bunaken Island & Manado, Sulawesi, Indonesia - March 23-26 By the time we got to Bunaken, we were both miserable. We were at the point of just sitting in our room, staring at each other with pain-induced glazes over our eyes, banging our heads against the wall, and popping Advil like they were skittles. We knew we'd need to sit out the dives that first day, but we really thought that the pain in our ears would subside enough to go the next day. We were wrong. Even though the Two Fish Resort on Bunaken is bigger and more developed than the...

Jul 5, 2011 - Happy Campers!

Lembeh Island, Indonesia - March 18-23 The outstanding experience we had at Two Fish Dive Resort was certainly not limited to the water. With the exception of our rocky arrival, everything was fantastic. Now when I say we stayed at a dive 'resort,' it sounds a lot more luxurious than it actually was. Not to say it wasn't nice - it was - it was just more of like being at camp. Which made it even more fun! We all ate meals together in a big mess hall of sorts. The food was AMAZING... the kitchen staff served lots of local specialities...

Jun 27, 2011 - Mucking Around in Lembeh

Lembeh Island, Indonesia - March 18-23 Unfortunately, our arrival at our next stop - the island of Sulawesi - was not much less traumatizing than our arrival in Jakarta. Charles had been in touch with the owners and managers of Two Fish Divers for a few months before we left on our trip, and we were truly looking forward to the experience. So, when we landed in Manado, collected our bags, and no one was there to greet us and drive/boat us to the resort on Lembeh (as planned) we were hugely disappointed. Of course, my first thought was 'OMG,...

May 1, 2010 - Lembeh Straight, Sulawesi

Moved to another resort ~1.5 hours South of Manado. Lembeh Straight is famous for "muck diving", which means lots of black/white volcanic sand, muddy bottoms with occasional sponge or coral outcrops and limited visibility. Why would you come and dive here? Lembeh is famous for an amazing diversity of crazy, unique creatures - mostly small. Spent another 6 nights and 5 days diving here. Fantastic! We booked unlimited diving (though didn't have energy for more than 3 dives most days) and got our own dive master and boat in the package....

Apr 25, 2010 - INDONESIA, Bunaken, Sulawesi

Arrived in Manado via Singapore and a short drive and 30 minute boat trip took us to our resort. Spent 5 nights and 4 days scuba diving here. Really good diving with amazing coral reefs and walls, fish and some turtles. Also, lots of little critters (nudibranches, shrimp, etc.) and dolphins (above water only). The villagers in this part of Indonesia are mostly Christian (missionaries were very successful here), though Islam is still present. We learned that village leadership changes from Christian to Muslim every 5 years. What a great way...
