Jan 24, 2013 - Diknas trip to Riau

It seems that there has been some planning that the Diknas staff will have a few days away.  I have been invited.  They will leave on the afternoon of the 23rd January and return on the 25th January.  They have chosen these dates as the 24th January is a Red Calendar Day for Muhammads birthday. As in everything Indonesian, the dates were changed to the 24th to 26th January the day before the original departure date.  I was not sure who was going as I had not been involved or informed of those things.  I knew that Siyo was not going as she...

Dec 21, 2012 - Pekanbaru, Riau

Once again Trisna I travelled by local by bus to payakumbah on Thursday as the travel bus that her had booked ticket for 50rp,would pick us up at around 7am on Friday morning. They were attending the wedding on behalf of their son as it was his wife’s brother’s wedding. Like the travel car the bus picked everyone up from their home and would drop them at their destination. We were the last on and then the bus was totally full. It took about 5-5.5hrs with a couple of short refreshment/toilet breaks along the way. We were all...

Oct 28, 2012 - Bintan Island INDONESIA

At 5AM on Friday 19th October, we farewelled our family in Brighouse and made our way to Manchester airport (thanks for the ride Steve!). After about 24 hours in transit, we arrived at Club Med on Bintan Island for some serious beach & pool time. Bintan is actually part of Indonesia, but it's easiest access is a 45 minute ferry ride from Singapore, which means two lots of the customs and immigration circus - but it was worth it! Even though we were really tired, we hit the pool almost immediately. The 8 days after that followed a similar...

Apr 8, 2009 - Bintan Island

Yippee!!!! Guess who is feeling better and is back to 3 small meals a day? Isn't it amazing what the correct antibiotics can do? I was almost ready to go to hospital on Monday night and today back to my old self!! We have had a lovely day today in this paradise of an island. We began the day with a long walk, stopping at each pool to have a dip and cool off, then arriving at the most beautiful, pristine and secluded beach, where we lazed and swam in the surf. I went and had a beach massage and had the strangest realisation!!! I believe I...

Apr 7, 2009 - Bintan Island

Well I am still unwell, but fortunately in the luxury of Bintan. I got worse last night and all eventualities crossed my mind, so this morning I phoned 1 of the Doctors at work and sorted myself out. It appears I could have Salmonella poisoning!! Great!! At least it's 1 hell of a way to lose weight!!! Luckily, I have the right antibiotic with me in my "save the third world medical kit", so hopefully I will start to improve soon. Not much to report from the confines of the toilet, bedroom and balcony of the hotel, except that Ron got...

Apr 6, 2009 - Bintan Island

Hello from Bintan. Well I am still not well, although pleased to report that I have eaten 2 pieces of toast in the past nearly 48 hours. I knew food would get me in the end!!! Anyhow, I managed to get down by the pool for a little while and have a swim (or more like a wetting) and then move to the beach, lie on the lounge, stagger over for a beach massage, have a swim (well, another wetting) and then go back to bed for the afternoon. Poor Ron is exploring the Island alone, but seems quite happy. The beach here reminds me of Whitehaven in...

Jan 18, 2008 - Bintan Island, Indonesia

Another early morning to get ready for the big weekend. Kamal and I got up before the rest of the roomies and headed to the ferry terminal as I had to be there to pay and check everyone in. Things ran pretty smoothly, but we were cutting it close at the end by the time everyone finally arrived. It was no problem though. We boarded the ferry and all sat on the top deck enjoying the sunshine and the ride. It was about 1 hr 45 minutes until we reach Tanjung Pinang, where a bus met us and took us to the resort/bungalows. The bungalows were...

Nov 22, 2006 - Singapore

My friend Claire was being sent to Singapore for a confrence for a couple of days so I decided to pop down to Singapore and check it out for a week. The cheapest flights left Hong Kong on Wednesday and came back the following Wednesday so those were the ones I booked. Claire was coming over on the Friday night and then leaving on the Tuesday so I booked myself into a hostel for the times that Claire was not there and was due to crash out in Claire's hotel room on the nights she was there. It all seemed like a good plan. The excursion...

Oct 13, 2006 - Singapore

Singapore...what to say. When I arrived in Singapore, I was really excited to be in a big city with public transportation. It was a nice change from Bali! I stayed at a backpackers in the Colonial District, just up the street from Raffles. The first day I was there, I met up with a contact of Sue's and he took me to lunch in Boat Quay. We had a great lunch and I spent the rest of the afternoon cruising around the Singapore River. I have to say that the humidity in Singapore was out of control! For the next few days I wasn't feeling my...
