Mar 5, 2012 - Komodo Island

We sail through calm waters and anchor off the shores of Komodo Island. The tiny island is sandwiched between Sumbawa and Flores in Indonesia. The humidity is high and low clouds are hanging over the top of the mountains. The foliage is lush green with palm trees and the accompanying undergrowth of grass and bushes. It is quiet and calm here. There is only one small fishing village on the island as this is a national park and home to a fierce and rare species of reptile that looks like a dinosaur. It is called a Komodo Dragon but it is not...

Indonesia 2011

May 28, 2010 - Sumbawa

Most people pass through Sumbawa on their way to/from Flores so that was reason enough for me to pay a visit. I took the bus to Bima where I stayed the night - there's not much there but the local inhabitants seems friendly enough, I think I was the only Westerner in town. Next up was a trip on a local bus whose suspension had long since been shot to pieces for the 8 hour trip to a resort close to Sumbawa Besar. I spent 6 Days on the resort and I never did get round to taking any photos, in fact I did very little at all there.

May 22, 2010 - Labuhanbajo and Komodo

I do everything I can to avoid overnight bus trips - I just hate them because I never get any sleep and I'm always too big for the seats but there was no way of avoiding the 24 hour bus/ferry trip from Mataram (worst bus station on this trip - annoyingly aggressive touts!) across the island of Sumbawa to the town of Lubuhanbajo in Flores. I used this town as a base to see the dragons on the nearby islands of Rinca and Komodo and to do some diving of which I had heard many good reports. I was fortunate and met a Dutch and Spanish guys who...

Where's Malcolm?

Apr 19, 2010 - Labuon Bajo, Flores

Happily, we caught our flight to Flores without a hitch. We were relieved when it turned out our plane was a rather new jet instead of the old, propeller plane we'd feared. Though, it must be noted, we had our doubts about our safety as each passenger and their baggage was carefully weighed and we noticed several passengers hiding their carry-on bags to avoid being charged excess baggage fees. When the plane began to land and we couldn't see a runway anywhere, we feared the worst. Eventually, the runway was found, but was nearly too short...

Apr 15, 2010 - Komodo Island boat tour

From the Gili Islands I went on a 4 day boat trip east to see some of the many islands that make up the archipelago of Indonesia. There were 15 of us on a boat that probably should have been retired from the waters long ago so the conditions weren't great. The toilet was a hole in the back of the boat, there were no wash facilities and the mattresses were paper thin and there was just enough floor space for them all so it was very cosy. But apart from this it was actually a really good experience. We stopped regularly to snorkel in the...

Feb 18, 2010 - Komodo Island, Indonesia; February 18, 2010

Time (& civilization) surely forgot this isolated group of Islands, East of Timor & the Flores Islands, north of the Northern Territory "Top End of Australia," & the one of southernmost Islands of the Indonesian Islands (a vast territory of water, land & islands between Australia & the Asian continent). So unpopulated is this area, the "Komodo islanders prefer to live mostly on other islands & come over (only a few miles by motorized long boats) to Komodo Island only when cruise ships come in, since there is no industry other than tourism &...

Jan 24, 2010 - Across Flores, the Kelimutu

“Two million rupiahs for the trip to Maumere”, I had told the guy at the Gardena hotel open air lobby yesterday when he asked if I wanted a car. “On Java and Sumatra I normally pay 300.000 to 350.000 per day, so for four days and one day to drive back that would be about 1.750.000; two million should be a good price”, I had explained to him. At the Golo hotel they had asked 3 million and at the travel agency down the street 2 million and a half, but I reckoned that out of season that was over the top and indeed an hour later the lobby guy...

Jan 20, 2010 - Komodo Dragons, Flores

“Can you repeat that, I can’t hear you”, I am calling Merpati airlines from the bus to Makassar to make a reservation and the booking girl is difficult to understand over the noise of the bus: “For tomorrow 19th of January I have reserved for you a flight leaving Denpasar, Bali at 13:00 and arriving in Maumere, Flores at 15:15. Price is RP621.800 that you have to pay before 11 a.m. at the airport”. My flight from Makassar should arrive at 10:15, so I should be able to make that. “Before 11 a.m., OK, thank you”. I had finally figured out...

Jan 9, 2010 - Komodo Island

January 9, 2010 The day is very bright and hot, about 87°. We boarded tenders that took us a short distance to Komodo Island and Komodo National Park, founded in 1980 to protect the Komodo dragon, later adding other species including marine species. Park rangers lead small groups on a level trail that started out rocky, but later was mostly gravel. We were told beforehand not to wear or carry anything red, which would agitate the dragons to attack. We walked quietly along until we came to a watering hole surrounded be a grassless area under...

Dec 8, 2009 - Komodo Dragons on Komodo Island

I think on woke up this morning but I have absolutely no clue about the time ( and dates usually during this trip. It is like the life has no time ) after the morning banana pancake we walked in Komodo island ( which was biggest than Rinca and of course more touristical…) to see some dragons. It was really strange as the few one we saw looked they were paid to stay here for tourists ( like the few bambi we saw… usually Bambi is really wildness but here they didn’t move, just waiting for the pic ! )the Komodo visit was not exceptional I...

Dec 7, 2009 - 1st day of the trip boat to Lombok

After check out and got our (delicious banana pancake- tea) breakfast, we have been to the travel agency we booked the boat trip the day before. Once we arrived we learnt that we will be only 3 on the boat and we had 1 hour before the departure. We went to the shop to buy some beers , wine and ice tea. Then a retire guy arrived to the shop. His name was Jean-luc and he was French. We moved to the pier and went into the boat which was really nice, (usually, around 15 tourists can travel in this boat.. ) so it was enough big for all of us (...
