Oct 10, 2012 - Sape via Bima and Ferry to Labuan Bajo, Flores

Our onward Dunia Mas #2 bus arrived just before 10pm and took us - somewhat uncomfortably - to Bima by 3am, earlier than we had expected. There was a local bus sitting at the station which took us to Sape ferry terminal but only after we sat on the bus until 5 am. We traveled from Bima just as the sun began to rise and during our 1+ hour ride I enjoyed seeing the unfolding valley of rice and waking/walking children to school along the way. We were both very tired after now on the move for 24 hours and still not at our destination. We got...

Aug 26, 2008 - Buses through Bima to Sape, Sumbawa

Today was a long but successful day of bartering, patience, and beautiful scenery which took us from the beach to Hu'u village by motorbike, then (after a long wait followed by a one-and-a-half hour tour of the village to see if anyone else wanted to go) to Bima by Bemo (shared minivan), then, after a very good and cheap Bakso lunch, to Sape by another Bemo. We slept well, ready to get the morning ferry to Flores.

Jan 14, 2007 - Indonesia (don't let the bedbugs bite... seriously)

Good times in Indonesia, rashes and challenging bus/ferry rides notwithstanding. I got to Bali on New Year's Eve and decided to stay in Jimbaran, far away from Kuta Beach, the tourist hotspot and site of the nightclub bombings a few years ago. Not much of a partier these days, I had an early and very fresh and tasty seafood dinner on the beach in Jimabaran and then went to my room across the street from the restaurant and crashed before 10. The most exciting thing that happened to me at midnight was my digital watch beeping. Happy New...

Jul 17, 2005 - Day 3 Komodo Island

We had sailed through the night to Komodo Island. I watched the sun rise from the mat on my floor; we ate breakfast and then went to the Island to hunt Komodo dragons (with camera)! We saw 2, first a baby who ran away and then an adult about 40 years old which had been tagged by American scientists from San Diego to monitor its life. In total the trek was for 2 1/2 hours and 4 kms. We were taken by Rangers on a track as there are about 1300 dragons on the Island and they do like the taste of humans given half the chance. When they bite the...

Apr 13, 2005 - Bali, Lombok, Sambawa

April 5/6 Lovina Beach Bali Made it to Bali yesterday with no problems, the ferry left a few minutes after we arrived and was very short. The next day we set off for the volcano and were going though a town having got a little bit lost when we were stopped by 2 policemen on motorbikes. Karen was driving and it seems we went straight from a turning left lane, to make things worse we hadn't got any of our documents with us. So first we followed him back to his police box and then back to the police station. There we talked to someone who...
