Justin and I journeyed from Bali to Timor-Leste (East Timor) on January 11th, 2007. I can't find out how far it is between these two islands but the flight is about one and one half hours. Dili, the capital city, is about 400 miles north of Darwin, Australia. Timor-Leste is the world's newest nation, having gained independence from Indonesia in 2002. Jun 27, 2006 - Timor Leste, PM Alkatiri RESIGNS

June, 27th Tensions have been rising since (former) PM Alkatiri sacked 600 soldiers from the East Timor army. These soldiers from western ET, aka the "petitioners" were threatening to go on strike due to fact that they were not being treated fairly. It's a long story but supposedly these soldiers were sympathetic to the Indonesian army during the many years of occupation.
