Feb 23, 2018 - Komodo - There be dragons!

Komodo Island National Park comprises 3 islands, with about 1,000 dragons on each of the islands. There are also 5 other islands with dragons with another 500 or so. First thing we notice ,is the only sign of habitation is a small a town nestled by the beach in one valley. Our ship sails by the town to a lonely looking pier a couple of valleys away. We are wondering where is the everyone. Dragons ate them? Some boats start to show up and finally we can see some buildings back in the trees near the pier. There are surprises as we prepare...

Apr 27, 2017 - 4 days on the sea

As I haven't written you for quite a while,I need to think where do I start. I think I last left you on Gili Meno. We left in the morning to Lombok, which is a bigger island next to Bali but smaller than Bali itself. From Lombok,we hopped on a bus with all the other people we then spent the whole trip with. We had to drive across the whole island of Lombok which took hours and we got on the boat just about 1pm. On that day we did not do anything apart from sailing. Originally we were supposed to stop for a bit of snorkelling but I...

Mar 19, 2017 - March 19, 2017 – Komodo Island, Indonesia

March 19, 2017 – Komodo Island, Indonesia To get to Komodo Island we “tendered”- that is we transferred to life-boats and were ferried to shore. We saw 5 Komodo Dragons today. There was a young one about 6 months old which was up in a tree. There were 4 others of varying ages from 5 to 20 years. Of the 3,000 Komodo Dragons, about 1,300 of them live on Komodo Island. The rest are scattered on the other islands which make up the National Park. I need to correct something I wrote earlier. Either the lecturer misspoke or I misheard. The Dragons...

Dec 26, 2016 - Boxing Day Komodo

Possibly the crown jewel of the trip, Komodo Island is the stuff dreams are made of. As kids, we think about such places and here we are at Komodo National Park. God is very kind! They haven't spoiled it with touristy claptrap, not that one cannot buy a dragon figurine at a harbor tarped table. We commence our trek with Henrdrik our bootleg guide...I say bootleg only because he isn't a boat sponsored guide...and we sweat up to a viewpoint over the island called Sulfurea...not for volcanic sulphur but for the sulphur crested cockatoos that...

Nov 30, 2016 - Rinca Island - Komodo Dragons

Soooooooooo Bloody HOT during the night just in the pirate hut surrounded by mozzy nets. I don't think I've ever been that hot! WOWZER Day! Great snorkelling with Manta Rays at at Manta Point. The sea was filthy though. Went on to Pink Beach where sea was much cleaner, lovely coral and saw some more Rays. On to Rinca Island, Komodo National Park. IDR257,000 £15.10 each to get in. Had 2 guides with a big forked stick who took us on 1.5 hour hike. Saw around 8 dragon's mainly under the rangers room as they can smell the cooking. Back on boat...

Mar 20, 2014 - Komodo Island

Komodo Dragons - wow! Thursday March 20th we are visiting Komodo Island. This was due to a change of schedule because of a tropical storm approaching Bali. Hopefully we will still make it there in 2 days time after the storm. Komodo Island is, of course, home of the famous Komodo Dragons. There are 2000 that live here and there are some on other islands but this is the one to visit. We had a guide, a forest ranger and a local man from the island village escorting us on our 90 minute hike, armed with stout sticks to fend off any dragons that...

Dec 5, 2012 - Komodo Dragon hunters

Hi friends, today we went to an island in Indonesia called Komodo Island. I saw some Komodo dragons and deer in the wild. We went on a hike around the island. You have to stay with a guide that carries a big stick to protect the visitors from the dragons. They are huge, like 300 pounds. The island is very hot & dry like a desert. All the trees were losing their leaves & looked dried up. Bella fell on a tree and scraped up her arm:-( She will be ok. Your friend, Phillip

Mar 5, 2012 - Komodo Island

We sail through calm waters and anchor off the shores of Komodo Island. The tiny island is sandwiched between Sumbawa and Flores in Indonesia. The humidity is high and low clouds are hanging over the top of the mountains. The foliage is lush green with palm trees and the accompanying undergrowth of grass and bushes. It is quiet and calm here. There is only one small fishing village on the island as this is a national park and home to a fierce and rare species of reptile that looks like a dinosaur. It is called a Komodo Dragon but it is not...

Feb 18, 2010 - Komodo Island, Indonesia; February 18, 2010

Time (& civilization) surely forgot this isolated group of Islands, East of Timor & the Flores Islands, north of the Northern Territory "Top End of Australia," & the one of southernmost Islands of the Indonesian Islands (a vast territory of water, land & islands between Australia & the Asian continent). So unpopulated is this area, the "Komodo islanders prefer to live mostly on other islands & come over (only a few miles by motorized long boats) to Komodo Island only when cruise ships come in, since there is no industry other than tourism &...

Jan 9, 2010 - Komodo Island

January 9, 2010 The day is very bright and hot, about 87°. We boarded tenders that took us a short distance to Komodo Island and Komodo National Park, founded in 1980 to protect the Komodo dragon, later adding other species including marine species. Park rangers lead small groups on a level trail that started out rocky, but later was mostly gravel. We were told beforehand not to wear or carry anything red, which would agitate the dragons to attack. We walked quietly along until we came to a watering hole surrounded be a grassless area under...

Dec 8, 2009 - Komodo Dragons on Komodo Island

I think on woke up this morning but I have absolutely no clue about the time ( and dates usually during this trip. It is like the life has no time ) after the morning banana pancake we walked in Komodo island ( which was biggest than Rinca and of course more touristical…) to see some dragons. It was really strange as the few one we saw looked they were paid to stay here for tourists ( like the few bambi we saw… usually Bambi is really wildness but here they didn’t move, just waiting for the pic ! )the Komodo visit was not exceptional I...

Feb 8, 2008 - Home of the Dragons

From the Gili Islands we took a 36 hour boat-bus-boat-bus-boat ride to Flores. It was tiring but went by surpisingly fast. Flores is famous for the findings of some remains of small "hobbit-like" people in 2003. It is also the gateway for getting to Rinca and Komodo Islands, home of the Komodo Dragons. We booked a boat trip out to the islands after arriving in Labuan Bajo, the port town on Flores. It was just the two of us on the boat with the captain and a crew member. We left early in the morning and set off for the island of Rinca. The...
