Apr 30, 2017 - Last few days in Indonesia

Before you read this,I put an other one up from days before so if you only reading this and haven't read about our mountain climbing to Gunung Inerie yet, I suggest to read that first. One thing is sure and people should know...internet in Flores is rubbish. I couldn't join or use internet for days. One day I said, I'll be here tomorrow and then 3 days nothing. People started to worry. Well,I'm fine just couldn't use internet. Now, we are in Maumere and sitting in the middle of nowhere where we came by motorbike taxis. They had to...

Apr 30, 2017 - Gunung Inerie

Gunung Inerie. The big monster we climbed. Before I tell you how it was, I have a little advice. If you are not too fit,if you get tired after 10mins climb, if you know your feet aren't too stable, don't even try to climb it! I'm not saying I'm the most fit -especially after putting 5Kg or so on - but we do have lots and lots of experience hiking on mountains, volcanoes, so I do have that. Even though, I thought this was the toughest climb I've done. Let's start with the fact we left very late. Normally people are doing it for...

Apr 27, 2017 - 4 days on the sea

As I haven't written you for quite a while,I need to think where do I start. I think I last left you on Gili Meno. We left in the morning to Lombok, which is a bigger island next to Bali but smaller than Bali itself. From Lombok,we hopped on a bus with all the other people we then spent the whole trip with. We had to drive across the whole island of Lombok which took hours and we got on the boat just about 1pm. On that day we did not do anything apart from sailing. Originally we were supposed to stop for a bit of snorkelling but I...

Mar 19, 2017 - March 19, 2017 – Komodo Island, Indonesia

March 19, 2017 – Komodo Island, Indonesia To get to Komodo Island we “tendered”- that is we transferred to life-boats and were ferried to shore. We saw 5 Komodo Dragons today. There was a young one about 6 months old which was up in a tree. There were 4 others of varying ages from 5 to 20 years. Of the 3,000 Komodo Dragons, about 1,300 of them live on Komodo Island. The rest are scattered on the other islands which make up the National Park. I need to correct something I wrote earlier. Either the lecturer misspoke or I misheard. The Dragons...

Dec 26, 2016 - Boxing Day Komodo

Possibly the crown jewel of the trip, Komodo Island is the stuff dreams are made of. As kids, we think about such places and here we are at Komodo National Park. God is very kind! They haven't spoiled it with touristy claptrap, not that one cannot buy a dragon figurine at a harbor tarped table. We commence our trek with Henrdrik our bootleg guide...I say bootleg only because he isn't a boat sponsored guide...and we sweat up to a viewpoint over the island called Sulfurea...not for volcanic sulphur but for the sulphur crested cockatoos that...

Nov 30, 2016 - Rinca Island - Komodo Dragons

Soooooooooo Bloody HOT during the night just in the pirate hut surrounded by mozzy nets. I don't think I've ever been that hot! WOWZER Day! Great snorkelling with Manta Rays at at Manta Point. The sea was filthy though. Went on to Pink Beach where sea was much cleaner, lovely coral and saw some more Rays. On to Rinca Island, Komodo National Park. IDR257,000 £15.10 each to get in. Had 2 guides with a big forked stick who took us on 1.5 hour hike. Saw around 8 dragon's mainly under the rangers room as they can smell the cooking. Back on boat...

Nov 27, 2016 - Chilling by infinity pool

Spent ages Tring to sort Komodo Dragon tour (still). Mise at reception was hilariously useless due to language barrier (maybe)! He handed Tim the phone in the end and we've booked a IDR5,000,000 £300 2 day one night tour with Flores XP as they are the only ones which you can sleep in a Hut rather than boat. Went downtown with 60p lifts again to stock up on Bintangs Swimming in pool again...wonderful. Trying to work out where to go after trip. Our big lizard came out again, Tim wafted a giant moth in his direction and he pounced on...

Nov 26, 2016 - Bay View Gardens Hotel

Slept well with earplugs as 3 mosques in near vicinity. Breakfast was delivered to our room, you know, the one with fabulous view! Stood on the road waiting for a lift, a mini bus full of Indonesians gave us a lift into town squished on the front seat for IDR10,000 60p Got some Bintangs to replace the ones in fridge for 17,000 £1.08 rather than pay 35,000 £2.08 and another 60p lift to get back up the hill. Another lovely swim in infinity pool getting pics of Tim doing 'Wish You Were Here' album sleeve with his feet in the air. Wonderful...

Jan 7, 2016 - Bajawa

Bajawa has been a welcome respite from the high humidity nearer the coast, with hot days but cooler evenings. Overlooking the town is the perfect cone shaped 2,445 metre volcano Inerie, often topped in cloud. The town is small enough to walk around and as always I am drawn to the markets to absorb the colours, the smells and to people watch. There are very few tourists there so friendly people are eager to "talk" and use their English. Where you go? What your name? Where you from? Pancakes and fruit (papaya, pineapple, banana) seems to be...

Dec 31, 2015 - Lombok to Flores

Happy New Year to you all! We are in Bajawa on the island of Flores, a smallish town 1200 metres up in the mountains surrounded by volcanoes. Very lush and green and away from the high humidity on the coast. There is a Catholic church and a mosque in the town so not sure yet how New Year's Eve will be. The shops are doing a roaring trade in fireworks and we are hearing and seeing some of these being let off already. We enjoyed our "cruise" to Flores Island from Lombok. We booked "deck class" (as opposed to cabin class) and joined 13 others...
