Mar 23, 2007 - Diving the Gilis

So a funny thing happened on the Gili Islands. First of all I arrived a little later than I wanted to on the island due to the hassle of getting on the first ferry to the islands after they didn't run for a few days due to stormy weather, then finding a bus where the tour company doesn't lie to you about the boats not running so they can divert to a destination that they deem suitable, i.e. profitable for them. That cut a full day out of my schedule. The first dive should have been a sign of things to come. I decided to do my Diver Master...

Feb 26, 2007 - Gili Islands

The Gili Islands were definitely a little slice of paradise. We didn't exactly have the best weather and given the time of year it was much quieter then we were hoping for. After all this is suppose to be a little partiers paradise. But I must say, this place is really beautiful. A great couples get a way or a nice lazy escape for those of you who like to indulge in the psychedelic side of life while lazying around in a little thatch hut watching the waves roll in. There are no police here and the islands are easy enough to walk around. The...

Jan 20, 2007 - Bali, Lombok & Gili Trawangan

So we had arrived in Bali late at night after 48 hours of constant travelling, partying and not much sleep! We decided to go to Lombok (as Sophy had been to and seen a lot of Bali before with Natasa) for 4 days and TOTALLY CHILL as we were very tired with a weeks travelling in NZ also and the crossing of 5 time zones from Wellington to Bali. So we headed for Padangbai in Bali after a huge sleep so we could get the 4 hour ferry to Lembar in Lombok. It was a really peaceful crossing and we watched the locals fishing off the back of the ferry...

Dec 3, 2006 - Indonesia - Gili Trawangan

Off the northwest coast of Lombok there are three small islands that cater for the honeymooners, families and an island for backpackers called Gili Trawangan, which is known for being a party island, yet a relaxed place full of dive shops and small hotels. There are no police either or ATMs so we had to make sure we had enough cash on this tiny small island. After 9hrs travelling by coach and then a slow boat (thank goodness we didnt take the ferry which is slower), the highlight of our 'cruise' was having a school of dolphins swimming and...

Nov 20, 2006 - Lombok - Gili Isles (Gili Tangawana)

Flying on a short 30 minute flight from bali to Lombok. Arrived safely, took a taxi up to Bangsal and then had to charter a boat to take us over to the Gili's as we arrived too late to get the shuttle bus over. The gilis are a group of 3 small islands off the NW of Lombok. Surrounded by coral and none bigger than 5km in circumference they offer great coral, crystal clear water and great sandy beaches. The best thing about the island so far is they aren't playing the trashy R&B rubbish as spouted by all other island bars/clubs that I have...

Aug 18, 2006 - Gili Trewangan - Chaparones or Chaparoned, de Dutch

The boat ride over was heinous! It was extremely crowded, the small boat rocked back and forth making half the passengers sea sick, and to top it off, it rained intermittently forcing people to move in and out of cover every half hour or so. The only saving grace was that I was sitting next to a French ex-model who I chatted with for the majority of the trip. She and her other ex-model friend were good additions to the middle aged European posse we had started with the Dutch girls. The next day when we were on the beach truly confirmed the...

Aug 4, 2006 - R&R on the Gili Islands

After a well deserved sleep and still with aching legs we were picked up and taken to a boat to go across to Gili Trawengen- one of the 3 Gili Islands off the coast of Lombok. Within 30mins we were in paradise- great beaches; lots of small bars and restaurants and diving! Vic and I took our time finding a place to stay- it was the busiest place we'd been for a while! We spent 2 days chilling out on the beach (although Vic and Rich decided their legs we good enough to go biking -mad!), watching great sunsets and eating great seafood with a...

Feb 14, 2006 - Gilicious!

Asia. Nothing could be more of a collision of simple realities. Just getting our feet wet here puts me into a contemplative socio-economic frame of mind. The thought of spending nearly 5 more months in these fantastic types of cultures almost seems surreal. Actually, it is surreal. I suppose we could have chosen something simpler to be the launching point for this relatively small region that contains more than 50% of the world's population, but on the other hand, there is nothing like trial by fire to prove your worth! Certainly it's a...

Jan 2, 2006 - Gili Trawangan, Lombok

We sent 4 days on this island amd enjoyed every mintute. For the most part the island was rain free and the beach was a picture perfect aqua blue. The island itself was quite small and it only took us 1 hour to walk its entire circumference. At this, only half the island seemed to be developed with resturants, bars, and dive shopes while the other half remained somewhat deserted. Needless to say, it wasn't difficult to accompolish our main goal of coming to the island to enjoy some diving and kick back and relax on the beach. Spending...

Nov 1, 2005 - Heaven (pics added)

Hello everyone well we're not actually in heaven, as i dont think they have internet access up there yet, but we are pretty close! We are on a tiny island called Gilli Tranwangan which is north of the island of Lombok (will put a map ref on for you all) This place is just beautiful, white sand, beach huts, restaurants, glass bottom boats, lots of snorkelling...our idea of heaven although the trip here was a bit of a nightmare (when is it ever anything else with us two??) we bought our bus tickets to take us directly over here and knew that...

Sep 20, 2005 - Gili Air, Lombok...entering another part of Indonesia

For our next adventure, we hopped on a short flight from Bali, and headed east to the island of Lombok. From the airport we traveled through the mountains for 45 minutes by car, and then boarded a small boat to get to the tiny island of Gili Air. This island was like Gilligan's Island. It was so small that you could easily walk it's entire perimiter in just a couple hours, there were no paved roads, cars, or even fresh water! The shower and sinks at our hotel had salt water coming out of them- it doesn't taste so great with toothpaste! We...

Jul 25, 2005 - Indonesia - Lombok - Gili Meno

Selamat Siang!!! Climbing up to the summit of the Gunung Rinjani was just as hard as it's been relaxing to stay for five days in Gili Meno, the most beautiful island I've seen in my life. Again, turquoise waters and white-sand beaches full of corals, but this time the waters were even clearer and the beaches completely deserted. The Gili Islands is a group of three islands: Gili Trawangan where all the action takes place, Gili Air where all the locals go on holidays and Gili Meno where nobody goes. Of course, we went to Gili Meno! More than...
