Apr 20, 2005 - Batu/Malang

Apr 4, 2005 - The Bromo volcano

4 Apr Bromo Volcano Arrived at the crater rim and booked into a fab little hotel (6 pounds a night) complete with 4 poster bed! At Bromo there is a huge (10km across) crater with 2 more Volcanoes inside. You can drive 4x4 down into the crater and around the "Sea of Sand" but could we get the TR down (and back up!). We decided that we had to try and went to investigate, it was now pissing with rain we eventually found the track down which was very very steep and rough. We setoff down but decided this wasn't a good idea in the rain, turned...

Bridge to Bridge

Mar 9, 2005 - Gunung Bromo

Left Jogja at 9 am by minibus to Gunung Bromo which is an active volcano lying in the centre of the Tengger Massif (National Park). On the bus: Nik (London), Leen (Belgium), Petra (Germany) and a Dutch couple. We arrived in Probolinggo around 7 pm, had to change bus to get to Ngadisari (close to the crater), and arrived after a break down of the bus around 9 pm at Yoschi's guesthouse. Next morning we got up at 3:30 am to drive in a 4X4 up to Gunung Penanjakan (2770m) for sunrise. We were above the clouds and could not see the Tengger...

Mar 3, 2005 - Mt. Bromo

So many volcanoes to chose from in Indonesia and so little time!! Everywhere seems to boast a tour to do at sunrise, and we went for Mt. Bromo as it's meant to be one of the best, and was en-route to Denpasar, where we were due to fly out of. It took a 10hr bus ride to get up to our hostel, which was right up in the mountains above the clouds - time to get the warm clothes out!! We'd been plagued by a guy as soon as we got to the area, who was trying to sell us a sunrise tour package around the volcanoes for a very small sum of 250,000...

Stu and Liz On Tour

Feb 23, 2005 - Malang & Bromo

Feb 6, 2005 - Bromo!

Hello all! Dad and I have been in Cerewo Lewang (Central Java) for the last few days. We were out of contact with the outside world with no internet access. Bromo is a volcano that blew its top several years ago. The area was beautiful! We were up in the hills around a few volcanoes and many terraced farms. We escaped the heat up there as the nights and mornings were cold. We rented a jeep and driver to go to the top of a peak that over looked the whole area for sunrise. Our driver also took us to the base of Bromo and we walked to the top...

Sep 25, 2003 - Indonesia - Java - Climb Every Mountain

"Planes Trains and Automobiles", Indonesian style. That's what it felt like trying to get from Lovina in Bali to Bondowoso in Java. Only around 150 miles as the crow flies, it took us one bemo (minivan-style public transport), 3 public buses (none of which were express, air conditioned or non-smoking), one ferry crossing, one ojek (motorcycle), one becek (bicycle taxi) ... and 8 hours to get there!! ******* Located to the west of Bali, Java is the most densely populated island in the world. Its major centers like Jakarta and Surabaya are...
