Dec 24, 2016 - Surabaya SweatEx

Surabaya finds us on a walking tour downtown, but turn into an alleyway and you are in a quiet kampung. An old ibu cooks us up a tremendous lunch with a coconut curry with jackfruit? Great. Veg fried fritter things, lentil cakes, sambal, and we picnic with our bootleg tour group in a courtyard alleyway. A couple shows up from Yishun where we live... Then we continue walking about these old time neighborhoods where I can see the Dutch In the architecture somewhat like Malaka, with these cascading tile roofs...loads of young kitties...and...

Christmas in Indo

Sep 14, 2014 - A link to photos of Lombok

A link to photos of Lombok, an Indoensian island just east of Bali. It is early December and while I was adding captions to the photos I realised that its been almost 3 months since we were in Lombok and the time is flying by! https://picasaweb.google.com/107060324243321928504/LombokIndonesia?authkey=Gv1sRgCOeT6aK279DrHQ

Asian Adventure!

Mar 25, 2014 - Surabaya

Surabaya is the second largest city in Indonesia with 3 million people. It is known as the city of heroes because it was home to many of the nations fiercest independence fighters. Today it is a very bustling, but rundown city. There are signs of its former glory in some of the Dutch Colonial style buildings. As one guide book said if Indonesia was a rich country “the old town would have been renovated into fashionable real estate”. We started our day with a taxi ride to the House of Sampoerna, a clove cigarette factory. Clove cigarettes...

Mar 14, 2012 - Day 4 (Surabaya trip'2012)

Day 4 (Surabaya trip'2012) It was 5.50am to be exact and I was woken up by a loud scream. I learnt that the person was afraid of insects and she had seen a gigantic moth which somehow managed to enter the cottage. Anyway, once I was dressed and ready, I headed for breakfast. There, the buffet table awaited me. I filled up my whole entire plate because everything just seemed so enticing. Once I all of us were done eating, we gathered at the main entrace and boarded the vans which took us to the village school. My teaching group and I went...

Mar 14, 2012 - Day 2 (Surabaya trip'2012)

Day 2 (Surabaya trip'2012) It was 7am, surabaya time and I was queuing up for breakfast. You may think that the food comes in packets and you have to seat on long benches. Well, fortunately it was buffet style so there was a wide variety of food, ranging from rice to omlettes to toast with jam or nutella. We ate in an open air restaurant with the view of greenery everywhere. It was not as hot like Singapore but instead, cooling as if there was a gigantic air conditioner blowing at us, reason being the fact that we were on the mountain. ...

Mar 12, 2012 - Day 1(Surabaya trip'2012)

Day 1 (Surabaya trip'2012) It was 5am when I reached the airport. As I walked through the well polished automated glass doors, it was not long before I spotted the group of students and teachers going to Surabaya City in indonesia for our internationalisation trip. We checked in our baggage and soon, it was time to leave our parents and begin our six day trip to Surabaya. I felt butterflies in my stomach. This may not have been my first time going overseas without my parents, however, I felt once again like I was a young fawn, finally...

Hi all, After a good flight from Bangkok we arrived in Indonesia, Java, Surabaya. The flights in Indonesia are really cheap so we slept in the airport and waited until the morning for a flight. Nov 24, 2011 - Java - Day 14 - Train to Yogyakarta

Checked out of our hotel in Surabaya at exactly 12 noon. Walked over to the terminal and waited 3 hours for our train to go to Yogyakarta. A local Indonesian street band (made up of older men) setup their instruments in the main train station foyer and started jamming away. I must say they were really good. Half of their songs to our surprise were English, songs by Eric Clapton & Kenny Rogers. One of the band members spotted me in the crowd of awaiting train passengers and waved a hello and sported a big smile. Jason provided them with a...

Apr 23, 2010 - Surabaya

A four hour train journey through the lush green paddyfields of Java brings me to the port of Surabaya where the country's bid for independance began. The city is very spread out without an obvious centre and its the same story with accomodation, I did eventually end up at the Hotel Bali thanks to some help from some Surabayans I met just outside the train station. Now I celebrated my third year of being on the road whilst here, still lovin' it but the time flies by way too quickly, its just a shame there's very little in the way of...

Where's Malcolm?

Jul 5, 2006 - Bali, Java, Indonesia

Update: 31-Aug-06 Well after a few months in and out of Indonesia, I'm now in Malaysia with good Internet access, so I'll try to get caught up. I'm gonna try to be home by the end of September. Well after two weeks in Dilli, I'm no longer needed as our contract has expired, I'm in Bali just in time for summer holidays...uugh. Tourists are everywhere and I'm already getting restless to get away and back into the water. Timor Leste was quite and experience and I'm gonna try to get back here as soon as possible, but haven't I said that about...

Itchy Feet

Nov 26, 2005 - Indonesia..final stop...top of the world

I had a brief stopover in Surabaya ,Indonesia..where there are numerous active Vocanoes. The most famous of these is Mr. Bromo which sits in a Caldera of three active Vocanoes each erupts every 10 minutes like Old faithful..mostly smoke and sulfur steam. The locals have a $60 trip that includes a room, freee breakfast . wake up at 3am, warm jacket, a jeep ride to the viewing point (see Photos) then a horse ride to the top of the volcano and bus fare back to the city. You really have to take this trip if you visit Surabaya. I recommend Hotel...

May 16, 2005 - Surabaya, Java, Indonesia

I got a taxi at the bus station for the ride to the airport. When I got in another guy in a bus station uniform came to the window and said I had to pay for 'parking. I said, 'I don't pay for parking. He then changed it to 'security' and I answered, 'I don't care about security'. We pulled away and his friends began laughing at his failed attempts to get free money out of me. I was back at the airport by about 1 pm. I checked to see if any airline still had a flight to Bali that afternoon and got one of the last seats on a 5 pm. Garuda Air...
