Jan 11, 2010 - Semering

Monday, January 11, 2010 We had a 7:45 AM start for the three hour ride to Borobudur, a Buddhist monument in Central Java, Indonesia. We had a police escort for our two coaches. Why a police escort you might ask, so I did. The police guided us through traffic and it really helped. The sirens were blaring and lights were flashing as traffic moved over to let us pass. Had we not had the escort we’d never be able to get back to the ship in time. Our guide, Vera, pointed out interesting sights along the way: mahogany trees (there are two kinds...

Jul 20, 2009 - Get the heck outta dodge

One flat bed truck ride, wave crashing-nauseating speed boat, 10 people plus luggage in cram packed bemo, 2 delayed flights, and overpaid personal driver later, I am back in Kuta. - but no partridge or a pear tree in sight :) It took almost three hours to find a reasonable hotel tonight...maybe I was just being picky, but it apparently is peak season, so prices have gone up double or more in the past two weeks. I actually ended up at the same spot me and Ken started, paying three times as much for a much smaller room. Its super cute though....

Jul 18, 2009 - Sick and tired of being sick and tired

Ive been out of commission the past 24hrs. My stomach ache turned into bed ridden nausea. The worst part was that today was our last day with the children at school. We gathered up both of the schools we went to and took them to pick up trash at one of the beaches. Well actually the worst part was I sent my camera with Marie, and my batteries were dead. (I bought them yesterday) So, no kids, and no photos for today. :( Good news is Im up and slowing recovering, one glass of water at a time. Another positive has been, when I wasnt passed...

Jul 17, 2009 - Tummy aches and pains

Yesterday started with Anna and her boyfriend Sergie heading back to Java. They both are apart of VFP, but their last mission was done so they tagged along with us for this last week here in Karimunjawa. On the way to the school Gintas made mention of them leaving making him homesick (Anna is from Germany as well) and it started my own thoughts about leaving. The last couple of days have had its ups and downs. My stomach, especially today, has had it with the food here. Yesterday I tried laying down, but the heat, and roosters crowing,...

Jul 15, 2009 - Paradise Beach

The internet had been sketchy the last couple days so Ill gie you a quick update of yesterdays school vist. We talked about how trash has germs, and showed them some books Sofie made on recycling in France. We put on a quick skit of how trash should go in the trash can and played some games where we pretended we were trash and the students had to catch us and put us in the trash. We also helped them pick up trash on the playground and then reviewed about how you can kill germs with soap and water... hey its a start. We played on the futbol...

In fact the teacher was not yet back from Java. So. with it being the first day and no teacher.. we didnt know what to expect. It turned out to be everythign we imagined though. There were about 30 studetns of varying ages. 1st - 4th grade. And a couple of teacehrs there to supervise. It was such a werid high last niht, watching 10 people from different countries...

Jul 12, 2009 - Bubbles. Bubbles. mmmmMy Bubbles.

Today was free day. A total 180 from yesterdays entry. haha.. sorry, you gotta try and keep up, this place definitely has its highs and lows, and they change on a dime, so today was not one of trash (although it was still in the back of my mind) but one of perfection and beauty. Our group rented a boat and did a bit of island hoping and snorkeling today. This was the first time I have snorkeled in the open water and for all the people that I have talked to that dive...OMG.. you were so right. I was told its a whole different world and...

Jul 11, 2009 - Reality check

Im issuing a recall on yesterdays entry. Ignorance is bliss. And yesterday afternoon was my wake up call. The rest of the afternoon was spent on a small tour with the town leader to show us what they do with their trash on the island. Are you ready for a story that will blow you mind? ..mine was. The first spot we are taken is a few houses down. We were led behind the house, literally to the backyard, where there is a small dump. We were told this use to be swamp lands, you can still see the waters edge, what the have done is throw the...

Jul 10, 2009 - IIWC (Indo. International Work Camp) Day One

I took some allergy meds from Marie last night and this morning my spots seem to have gone down a bit, so that is a relief. One more day Im sure Ill be good as new. Today was fun. We sat in on a local mothers meeting (a PTA meeting for the most part) and helped them pick up trash in the area. Its fuuny because everyone here, men, women and children all call white people Mista (mister) whether your female or male. So its funny to see kids come running up to you yelling Mista!Mista! Halo!!! Cute. I still get pulled away from our group to take...

AreJe joked..maybe its the rice? :) Today we took the 6 hour ferry to Kiwramajawa. We watched dolphins from the bow and I ate some tastey banana chips and tried consiously not let my throat swell up. K. is nice. It is a small town, only a couple of thousand on the whole island. There is much more color...

Jul 8, 2009 - Canidate 1, 2 or 3

Today was election day, so most places were closed and we had nothing to do because the ferry can not take us to Karimunjawa untill tomorrow Luckily Ferry (the Spainard) read in lonley planet that there was a swimable beach not to far from here. We found a guy that let us jump in the back of his truck and hauled us down to the beach. We were told before we left to make sure we respected the area and the muslim culture by not wearing tank tops (keeping our shoulders covered) and not smoking (most of our group does) So upon arriving at the...
