I Love My Life

Jan 1, 2010 - New Year's Sunrise at the Bromo

After visiting the Puri (Palace) in Solo we head into the mountains to visit Candi Sukuh, a small but intriguing temple almost Inca in style. Dating from the 15th century, little is known of the builders and their iconography which is almost cartoonesque with exaggerated faces and bodies and quite a few of the sculpted panels display more than just a hint of eroticism. Afterwards, we have a simple lunch in the mountain resort of Magetan and rain is pouring down when we arrive late afternoon at the Merdeka Hotel in the centre of Madiun...

Sep 30, 2008 - Malang

by Lora We arrived in Malang, which is a city on the eastern part of the island of Java, on the 25th, after a 12 hour overnight bus ride from Bali. We're here visiting some of Chris's friends who live and work in this area. Our first few days here, we got the chance to meet some students and spend some time with them. On Friday, we helped the students make a sweet soup made with bananas, sweet potato, jackfruit, and coconut milk. After bagging portions of the soup up, we went outside after sunset to a busy mall and passed the soup out to...

Mar 21, 2007 - Cemoro Lawang and Mount Bromo

Hi guys Well for a brief update we are are a few pennies down and we saw nothing!!! I'll elaborate.... We left for the larger island of Java on tues and went by over night bus. And what a bus we must say, fully reclining seats, blanket, pillow, free meal and a few movies! Better that some accomodation we have stayed in!! Anyway we had mixed reports about what time we would arrive in a town called Probolingo, the gateway to our next mountain adventure. Some said 5 or 6 in the morning which was fine, things would be starting to open and...

May 27, 2006 - Mount Bromo

We took a long 9 hour bus ride aboard a very comfortable mini bus with lots of room to a village called Cemoro Lewang. This little village is in eastern Java and is on the edge of a massive crater containing a sea or black sand and two volcanoes within in the crater and more surrounding volcanoes in the distances. The area is known as Mount Bromo which is the name of the live volcano within the crater. We arrived a night so we couldn't sees the amazing view but mom was quick to notice the large Easter lily trees that she could smell in the...

Mar 20, 2006 - Mt-Bromo

Feb 21, 2006 - Tongariro redeemed and other birthday musings...

I am 39 years old and staring through a window to the centre of the Earth. The sun rises over the landscape much more quickly than I ever imagined it could as a result of the planet's equatorial velocity. Some concepts are almost impossible to understand. Alive. If you we're to ask me a few years ago where I thought I would be on my 39th birthday, I would have been hard pressed to come up with the answer: "Standing over the Tengger Massif in Java at 5 am, overlooking Bromo, Semaru, and Batok' - one of many of Indonesia's active volcanic...

Nov 29, 2005 - Malang and Bromo

NOV 29 - DEC 3: OF AUSSIE GIRLS, MISSED BUSES & VOLCANOES On the day of departure for Malang (allegedly a good way to get to Bromo) I finish getting all my pictures of Pangandaran downloaded. I am so far behind! But I also manage to get all my pictures burned to a CD, for the ridiculously reasonable price of $1. Good news indeed. Now I need to post it home. I will not delete the camera's flash cards until I have had confirmation it has been safely received. This proves to be a sound move! AND WE ARE OFF The three of us take a taxi to meet...

Jun 8, 2005 - Gunung Bromo

Gunung Bromo is a volcanic range in East Java, among the Tengger Massif. One day travelling to get here, straight to bed then up at 3:30am. A very bumpy jeep ride across a moon-like surface in the pitch black woke us up enough to arrive at the viewpoint for sunrise at 5:00am. Still dark and shrouded in low-lying clouds we couldn't see a thing. In the sub-zero temperatures we wondered what we were doing there. Suddenly, as the sun began to rise, rays of brilliant orange light were shed across the 10km wide Tungar Crater. The view was...

Apr 22, 2005 - Mt. Bromo Tour

We left Jogjakarta just before 9am to be taken to Mt Bromo. It's a 10 hour drive straight there and this guy who was driving was on a mission to get there as fast as he could. About 3 hrs into the trip I had to ask him to stop so I could take a pee, then he stopped for something to eat at 1:30pm, and then at about 4pm his radiator overheated, so he had to stop to refill the water cooler and that was it. We finally arrived at an agency, about an hour away from the Hotel Lava (where we were staying the night). It was pouring rain outside, a...

Apr 20, 2005 - Batu/Malang

Apr 4, 2005 - The Bromo volcano

4 Apr Bromo Volcano Arrived at the crater rim and booked into a fab little hotel (6 pounds a night) complete with 4 poster bed! At Bromo there is a huge (10km across) crater with 2 more Volcanoes inside. You can drive 4x4 down into the crater and around the "Sea of Sand" but could we get the TR down (and back up!). We decided that we had to try and went to investigate, it was now pissing with rain we eventually found the track down which was very very steep and rough. We setoff down but decided this wasn't a good idea in the rain, turned...
