I Love My Life

Jun 11, 2017 - Mount Ijen

Next stop on our trip was Mount Ijen. This involved a 6 hour car journey from Mount Bromo. Fortunately our hotel here was much nicer than the previous evening with a swimming pool and being right next to the beach (albeit with black sand which was a sight in itself). This time we had to wake up at 12.15am to begin our ascent up the mountain side. It started with a 90 minute drive up steep mountain roads in the dark and rain. Once we arrived at the base camp, it then involved a 2 hour very steep walk to reach our first viewpoint, the blue...

Jun 10, 2017 - Mount Bromo breath taking

We made the very long journey to Mount Bromo which in total took us around 11 hours by car and 1 hour by boat. The hotel we checked into was basic to say the least. The bathroom had a drip in the ceiling, so the floor was wet and there was a slight sewage smell. We decided to layer up for bed for two reasons, firstly as it was freezing cold and the second as the bed did not look the cleanest. Pick up was at 3.00am, we had a 4x4 jeep take us the 30 minute journey convoy style with lots of other jeeps following. We then walked the ten...

Dec 30, 2016 - Mighty Mt Bromo

Final port before home: Probolinggo, which is in Java. Mostly Hindu ... and farmers. The star of the show is the volcano, or several volcanos, most predominant, and active is Bromo. Getting there is part of the challenge. And since we don't pay ship tour prices, a Google drive-by turns up Bromo tours which can do everything and more than the ship tour can and for way less. So we hope, but reviews tend to tell the tale, so we can generally tell when something will work, will generally work, should work or will most likely work. This one...

Christmas in Indo

Dec 24, 2016 - Surabaya SweatEx

Surabaya finds us on a walking tour downtown, but turn into an alleyway and you are in a quiet kampung. An old ibu cooks us up a tremendous lunch with a coconut curry with jackfruit? Great. Veg fried fritter things, lentil cakes, sambal, and we picnic with our bootleg tour group in a courtyard alleyway. A couple shows up from Yishun where we live... Then we continue walking about these old time neighborhoods where I can see the Dutch In the architecture somewhat like Malaka, with these cascading tile roofs...loads of young kitties...and...

Christmas in Indo

Sep 14, 2014 - A link to photos of Lombok

A link to photos of Lombok, an Indoensian island just east of Bali. It is early December and while I was adding captions to the photos I realised that its been almost 3 months since we were in Lombok and the time is flying by! https://picasaweb.google.com/107060324243321928504/LombokIndonesia?authkey=Gv1sRgCOeT6aK279DrHQ

Asian Adventure!

May 28, 2014 - Plantation Time

We left at 9am for a tour of surrounding coffee, cocoa and rubber plantations. When we arrived, they did a brief presentation of three different coffee beans, including Kopi Luwak, otherwise known as "cat poo coffee". It is made of coffee beans that have been eaten and digested by a rare cat. The cats poo is then collected, washed, peeled, and brewed. It is the most expensive coffee in the world. I had a taste of a similar one in Vietnam made by weasels. As we were walking, we passed a house with a bunch of cages outside. The owner came...

May 27, 2014 - Mt. Bromo

4 hours of sleep, 2:30am wake up, 3am on the road! We packed into 4 wheel drive jeeps and set out for our journey up the mountain for sunrise at Mt Bromo. Mount Bromo is an active volcano and the most well known volcano of the Tengger massif. Known locally as "Gunung Bromo" the name is actually derived from Javanese pronunciation of Brahma, the Hindu creator god. We arrived around 4:30 am and spent about 45 minutes watching the sun rise. It was pitch black when we arrived and sunny when we left. It was quite breathtaking watching the small...

May 26, 2014 - The Coffee Lady

We left at 9am for a 3 hour walking tour of the farms and villages. We walked through the rice patty fields which was absolutely beautiful. We reached a stream of water that wrapped around the base of a mountain and took in all the greenery and teared rice pattys. We walked through the village and visited the eldest lady there known as the "coffee lady". She was amazing! At ninety three she still sits on the ground and grinds the coffee beans for her special coffee. She has a one room hut that operates as her tiny business. She brewed the...
