May 21, 2014 - Green Canyon

Today was an amazing day! We started early by walking through the local markets. It really gives you a deep appreciation for our grocery stores as all raw meats and fish are displayed and sold on wood tables covered with bugs. We went on to a village where we walked to the home of a local puppet maker and puppeteer of the famous Javanese Wayan Golek puppets. Along the way, the guide found a little spider that he put on me. Click on the photos to see his size. :) We watched how he made puppets from the local trees and carved them. They can...

May 20, 2014 - Dr. Doolittle

Today was a long travel day by mini bus! A van is a more accurate description, with 11 people + luggage. Needless to say, we were all very happy when we arrived in Pangandaran. Pangandaran is a small fishing village set amid a beautiful coastal reserve south east of Jakarta. It was the victim of a devastating tsunami in 2006 but has been rebuilt. Our hotel was a backpackers hotel, across the street from the beach. We had little patios outside our rooms which I sat on every morning and night. At 4pm, I joined the optional coastal reserve...

now, that's better...adam's homestay, a lovely place owned by a european couple...ans you notice the difference: everything is that bit more cleaner, a bit more effort in decoration and food that tastes like home...homemade bread, homemade jam and homemade muesli...sometimes all you need to be happy! did a surfing-lesson after relaxing by the pool for a while...i think that would be more my thing, even though i wasn't very good and the board hit my head :-D countryside tour was planned for the next day (12 euro!!!)...went to see a waterfall...

Mar 9, 2008 - Pangandaran, Java

Monday 10 March 2008 Finally arrived at Pangandaran following a very long journey by train and bus from Jakarta. But the journey was well worth it. We set off from Jakarta bus station in a tremendous storm (having flown in from Singapore the afternoon previously). Along the bus journey at the various stops, we were visited by hawkers trying to sell us their various wares - fruit, pastries, savouries - even musicians joined us, or just plain poor old beggars. The bus was quite full and for most of the journey I had a local lady fall asleep...

Nov 26, 2006 - Pangandaran

Nov 26, 2005 - Pangandaran

22 & 23 NOVEMBER - IN WHICH THE MOZZIES GET THE UPPER HAND AND MR T AGES A BIT The Green Canyon Boat Trip is something of a misdescription as the amount of time spent either on the boat or indeed on the Green Canyon, is small. It is an excellent day nonetheless. Normally the operators run it by minibus, but today there are just four booked on the trip and for some reason this means they are going to use motorbikes. I have never been on a motor bike before, so this should be well-wicked (about time to put one of Richie's street-talk lessons...

Apr 14, 2005 - Pandangaran

Hallo allemaal, Dinsdag 12 april: vandaag is Daan jarig, dus even bellen. Is gelukt!
