Jun 12, 2008 - Jakarta (INDONESIA)

Mar 8, 2008 - Jakarta

Jakarta This entry is really only here just to get the location plotted onto the map! Only stayed here the one night having flown in from Singapore late on Saturday afternoon - so apart from a delicious Satay Chicken meal and a night on the town at a local bar with a local band playing county and pop tunes, didn't get a chance to see any sights (although I am told that I did not miss too much!)

Jan 10, 2008 - Jakarta

We spent three nights in Jakarta, mostly wandering the streets in shock - it's a very modern city in some respects, and to see US symbols (Starbucks, KFC) is a little jarring after the isolation of north Sumatra. But it was only a stepping-stone to Yogyakarta, where we went on the 12th. Hostel Yusran was nice, except for the stink - a damp, mildewy smell that permeated everything. Why does it seem that this is becoming a long list of everything wrong with everywhere we go? We are tiring of being on the move. After a breakfast at Memories...

Second Time Around

Mar 28, 2007 - In the capital - Jakarta

Hello everyone well we have traversed the entire island of Java and are now on the far north coast in the capital Jakarta. Its pretty modern, didn't know what to expect really but theres plenty of sky scrapers, department stores and Mcdonalds!!! Alot more advanced than the rest of indonesia! The city is humid and smoggy, dont think they have pollution laws over here, but the people are friendly and dont chase you down the street trying to sell you something as in the rest of Indonesia. We took the train from Yogya and paid a little more...

Dec 13, 2006 - crossing the equator (again!)

We're in the Singapore airport this morning (about 06:00), waiting for our flight to Jakarta. The internet here is provided free of charge. We enjoyed our short stop in Singapore these past few days. Yesterday was relaxing and informative as we spent the day on different city tours including a boat ride on the Singapore River. Our lunch was very "American" at the only microbrewry in the country. It was great, and really again reminded us of home---and our friends. The day before yesterday was slightly disappointly as heavy rain prevented...

Nov 25, 2006 - Jakarta

Dutchie on the move

Nov 9, 2006 - Jakarta, Indonesia

The next destination was Jakarta to visit Linda and Graeme, who have recently moved there. Linda had invited us to a party in Jakarta for the Melbourne Cup. We didn't know what to expect, but we were told to dress up and get there as early as possible as it started at 8.30am!! So we put our best dresses and went to the airport. Lots of people stared at us - they probably though we had been out all night! We arrived around midday. Linda met us with the chauffeur and champagne. We had missed the race (horse race on TV), but had lunch in a...

Girls on Tour

Sep 16, 2006 - Jakarta

Not much to say about Jakarta. I arrived just as it was getting dark by train in the Gambir terminal and was stared at as though I had an elephant on my back my the most crowded train station ever. I went to the Jakan Jaksa area close to the airport with some cheap hotels. Managed afer some trying to aquire what can only be discribed as a cell with no window a very dodgy desk fan and about a million mosqitoes. I went to get some food - not far as I had been warned by just about everyone I had talk to not to wander around after dark. LP...

Aug 24, 2006 - Jakarta...Can eat it!

Other than a comical sign in the Jakarta airport that read "Drugs - It's Wrong To Have Such Satisfaction" the city was terrible. It is dirty, smelly, there isn't that much to see, and that fucking call to prayer drove me crazy. Unless you install soundproof glass in your apartment there is just no escaping that bloody call. Lets be honest, nobody wants to pray at 4:45 am. Who could possibly have the brainpower for introspection at that time of the morning? And, if someone has the initiative to wake up and pray, let them pray in peace....
