Jul 22, 2017 - Ubud

We had an appointment in Ubud, so Dave found us a Grab Car and we headed inland to the forest. Most Balinese talk about Ubud as the garden spot of Bali and, based on my limited experience, I think I would agree. We found a great guesthouse where they served breakfast on the terrace and had a spa onsite. After our meeting, we wanted to do a bit of touring, so the owner of the guesthouse arranged a taxi to drive us around for the afternoon. We started at the rice terrace. It was a bit more commercial and tourist-oriented than I was...

Jul 11, 2017 - Bali - Ubud

7 July - Bali - Ubud Up very early, Carolyn loaded the car while we cleared up and we set off to the airport. Arrived in good time, checked in and spent an hour sitting at the gate. We were a bit overloaded so didn't bother with the duty free. Flight was comfortable enough and uneventful save for a little brat who yelled at the top of his voice every few minutes. Arrived at Denpasar Airport, eventually we cleared immigration and customs and were met by the driver from the hotel. It was hot and very humid. We packed into the car and set off...

Oz and the Big Lap

Jul 4, 2017 - Ubud

Spent several days in Ubud on Bali, Indonesia. We stayed at Ketut's Place which was structured like a traditional Balinese village compound. The whole family lived onsite and their temple was there as well, very authentic! We went on a gorgeous run along the Camphuan ridge walk starting just outside of town. The ridge runs between two rivers, through several small villages, past lots of rice paddies, and boasts some incredible views. We also visited the Monkey Forest Sanctuary, ate some delicious Indonesian food, and saw a traditional...

Jun 6, 2017 - Trying different things

We thought Ubud was higher up so would be cooler, we were wrong. As we arrived at our Homestay we were melting and realised we did not have air-conditioning. We did how ever have a sitting area out side our room in what is a very traditional setting. For lunch we found a restaurant that donates 70% of its money to local hospitals. We had tuna and orange chicken. This was the best food we have had all trip! The following morning we walked 30 minutes to a Pilates class. The walk lead us away from the hustle and bustle of the main road and up...

Apr 18, 2017 - Bali,Ubud

Today we had a nice start of the day which was the typical Balinese dance. Our host Nyoman took us there. It was a very interesting experience, hard to explain. It's a bit of dance, mainly an act like you would be in an outside theatre. After the 30-40mins experience, we visited some jewellery makers, a temple and also a wood carving place. I have to say, since I arrived to Ubud, I'm absolutely mesmerised by the lots of stone and wood carvings they have here. The amount of details they put in one statue or a miniature wooden...

Dec 28, 2016 - Bali 1

Bali is a big tourist draw for surfers parties and cultural types, but the appeal is somewhat lost on me. It has this special brand of Hinduism in a Muslim country, intriguing bell music in minor keys, and rice is growing everywhere. Certainly the people are incredibly sweet and love to serve, it seems. We got a place to stay up in Ubud right next to the monkey forest. These guys are well fed and not threatening like some other fellows we have seen..

Christmas in Indo

Nov 9, 2016 - 12 Zanzoo Close

Couldn't be bothered to get out of bed to go platypus spotting, too light anyway. Big cookaburro in the tree outside our apartment. Drove to Budaadji Canopy walk to see Din Din (Barron Falls). Nice. Saw green-arsed ants and some Jeepers Creepers. Stopped at shop for water on way back but Tim didn't want to spend 'all day shopping' again! Hosts 'helped' us platypus spotting and said how lucky we were seeing some bubbles come up from the creek as this was them! Had steak barbie which was yum. Arranged to view all Geoff in morning for his...

Mar 2, 2016 - Fietsen rond Ubud

Feb 16, 2016 - Bali, Indonesia

We have spent 10 days in Bali. The last time we were here was about 25 years ago for a short visit with Krysta and Chelsea on our way back from Denmark. The first thing we noticed, after spending time in Sulawesi, were the many, many temples and the daily offerings left beside them. Each family compound has a smaller family temple as well as larger community ones. At present they are all decorated in gold and white for Galungan. Hindu Balinese have just celebrated Galungan which marks the beginning of the most important religious...
