Sep 20, 2011 - Sanur and airport

Moved from Ubud to Sanur for my last night in Bali. Sanur was closer to the airport with the added bonus of being on the ocean. Bali has a population of about 3 million people and our guide said 3 million people visit each year. Everyone we met had big smiles and made us feel as we were the first ever visitor. A lovely culture with a strong Hindu religion and gentle grace for each day. Jan

Aug 30, 2011 - Bali - August 25-30

August 25, 2011 Our flight from Bangkok left at around 6am which meant a 3am alarm call and a taxi booked for a little later. The airport was busy at 4am and we were glad to get checked in quickly and through security with no hassles and to find somewhere for a quick breakfast and a sit down. The breakfast place was pretty average and I had to send my eggs back as the first lot turned up raw, the white of the egg still see-through and runny. I wasn’t risking an upset stomach just yet! The flight to Bali was with Air Asia and took about 4...

Nov 3, 2010 - Indonesia

I am writing from a little "cafe" on Gili Island, near Bali Indonesia. There's a lightning and thunder storm going on outside, and I'm surprised we haven't lost power yet... Yeah, this place is pretty cool. It's actually amazing. Shaun and I have been surfing almost every day. I went to "Surf School" and it's helping (though I'm still finding it hard to ride the green waves)! The ocean has so many different colours of blue and green, the beaches are white with fluffy clean sand, the vegetation is lush with flowers and amazing scents, the...

Jun 12, 2010 - On the banks of the deep end ....

Where your soul is your best friend Searching for a reason to go astray .... Here I sit, finally with a few spare minutes and a computer that seems to be working properly. It has been hard to stay in touch during my time in Indonesia so far. Either the computers are not available, the connection is sooooo slow or the power goes out in the middle of typing. I'm going to try to type fast (difficult for old Frankie two fingers)and hope the internet gods are looking after me. What an incredible time I've had so far in this amazing country. The...

Apr 25, 2010 - Sanur (Bali)

Sanur is a coastal town with a seemingly endless stretch of golden sand beach. There are resort hotels all along this huge stretch of beach. I only really came here as it was close to the airport and I had a flight the following day. It was hot and sunny when I arrived and I planned to spend the day on the beach. However, after i'd been here for a couple of hours it started raining really heavily and it didn't stop. There is not much to do here when it rains except wait inside for the rain to stop, which is what I did. Not the greatest day...

Apr 4, 2010 - En route to Oz

Saturday 27th March Travelled down to Sanur in the south west of Bali today – we stay here for a few days before we head on to Australia. Sanur is one of the main tourist areas in Bali, and it shows – the prices in the hotel are more or less double what they were in Lovina! Haven’t been out to explore the town yet to see if it is just a hotel thing, but it does not bode well. As usual, the weather gods had fun with us, giving Lovina the most perfect day (bright sunshine, reasonable temperature & humidity) just as we were leaving –...

Dec 7, 2009 - Bali, Indonesia

Monday 7th December 2009 Long day of travel today – we got up at 3.45am in Christchurch and went to bed in Bali almost 24 hours later! We spent much of the day in the international terminal of Melbourne airport which was weird as Melbourne has been our home for nearly a year but now we aren’t allowed outside of the airport. Our flight to Bali was delayed apparently because they were waiting for catering (not mechanical problems I hope?!) and when we did finally board the plane was less than half full – apparently it’s not peak season for...

Big trip home!

Dec 22, 2008 - Hopeful to Restart

Most of the team is back in Sanur. We got together at Sector’s, our golf clubhouse home-base. We delivered the newly required government documents to the Yayasan Secretary and arranged to have them brought to the office of the Health Minister. Additional meeting with Yayasan leaders seemed to indicate that perhaps there would be a 50/50 chance we would be able to restart. With that in mind, we mapped out a revised schedule combining the previous two separate teams into one large team, and targeted several large villages to treat over the...

Dec 16, 2008 - Orientation Day at Sector

One of our primary yayasan sponsors is a Balinese gentleman named Pak Dharma. He owns a restaurant in a golf club-house called Sector, which is managed by his daughter, Lina. They offered for us to have the GAHP team's orientation day meetings at the club-house. Besides having a large conference room, Sector was convenient to our lodging quarters. It also featured a nice Balinese food menu. What a great place to have a home-base for our activities. In the morning, Frank, Jen and I strategized with Pak Dharma and other yayasan leaders. With...

Nov 12, 2007 - Sanur

On the 12th of November we flew Air Asia from Kuala Lumpur to Bali, Indonesia. We spent the day of the 13th running errands and shopping in preparation for the return to Gili Air. Since we had arranged to rent a house we bought a few supplies at a local supermarket in Sanur.
