Oct 26, 2016 - Topi Inn - Padang Bai

Very hot (as usual). Spent most of the day dumping photos onto Dropbox. Had 6 items of clothing including 2 knickers laundered...50,000 Rupeah. TIM paid 6,000 for a bottle of water...rip off. NOT loving Bali at the moment. Walked up to Blue Lagoon Bay, not up to much. Ate snapper chosen from fish in ice at front of restaurant. The bathroom was OMG! Minging! NO loo roll (as usual). Possibly the family bathroom too as a toothbrush in there! An Austrian bloke told Tim to 'enjoy' when he went in after him! I didn't hardly eat anything.

Hundy Tour 2016-2017

Oct 25, 2016 - Off to Padang Bai

Belo drove us to the Bali Safari Park. Had our photos taken with an orangutan and tucan / parrots. OK but disappointed as £50 each. Belo drove us to Topis Hotel in Padong Bai 500000 Rhupea but gave him 600000 and a packet of cigs as very helpful. Worked out later we are mad paying that much as he is a tour guide! Aaaah well, ince bloke and not very well off. Topis is nice. Very basic but £12 a night. Has a graveyard view and fresh air above the windows. (Fold up windows we found later in the day!). Walked up the harbour front and had a...

Hundy Tour 2016-2017

Oct 25, 2012 - Padangbai via ferry/shuttle/ferry

In Gilis and Lombok, tons of horse taxis! Almost as many as motorbikes...NOT! But lots just the same. Actually, at one point I counted over a half hour period and the motorbikes passing by outnumbered all other vehicles 3.5 to 1. Still on Gili Air... I woke up at dawn, dead calm for a change and watched the swallows darting all around catching breakfast. Fascinating birds, we watched them at dusk as well, although there may have been some bats mixed in they all move so fast! We said our good-byes to our hosts at Villa Kombokafter early...

Mar 19, 2012 - Padang Bai, Bye Bali

Hello all, We had a great couple of nights and a decent day in Padang Bai. As we found out before we left, the ferries were indeed up and running after some really rough seas. Indonesia has a bit of a bad track record when it comes to ferry accidents, but it appears they have learned from the lessons of the past. As I we were told by a local. This is a really over looked port between Bali and Lombok and was not without its charms. The Blue Lagoon with it's turquoise warm waters and white sand, a definite highlight. Excellent value for...

Asian Adventure 2011

Mar 7, 2011 - Padang Bai, Bali, Indonesia

I know I keep saying this, but, Padang Bai, Bali just may be my favorite port of call so far! We had the luck of doing a bit of a "deep dive" into the local culture and religious beleifs that drive absolutely everything. We had a private driver and guide that we shared with our good friends Ron and Marcia (whom we met on last year's South America Adventure). Our guide took us to some expected tourists sights like the beautiful tierd rice fields and awesome Hindu Temples like Kehen Temple in the city of Semarapura--which were fabulous. But,...

Mar 7, 2011 - Eat, Pray, Love in Bali, Indonesia

We are so excited to arrive this morning in Bali, Indonesia! We tender to the pier and are greeted by a local group of men playing traditional Balinese music and women dressed in traditional garb offering us a grand welcome. The tiny village is a sea of vendors hawking their souvenirs – it is so difficult to make our way thru the crowd to our tour van. We are on a private tour of Bali with Mike and Cheryl Clark, our tour guide Ari, and a driver. Once inside the van the vendors continue to beg us to purchase their wares – enticing us by...

Feb 20, 2010 - Bali, Indonesia; February 20-21, 2010

Day #1 in Bali! (not Bali Hai! it is beautiful in its own way, though). Our "twin sisters" followed us here (or could have been waiting for us all along-we slept so soundly from the exhausting excursion, yesterday). Again, we got up early for the early morning tour that started at 08:15 and was another bus ride around the island of Bali. This time the anchorage was in an adjacent bay & the tender ride was about 30 min. to get on our awaiting buses (after wading through the swarm of "hustlers & vendors," many of the same faces who had been...

Feb 8, 2009 - Still trying to get to Lombok

Yesterday I said my farewells to Kirsti and Josh as they left Ubud to catch a plane to Kuala Lumpur. I then sat around daydreaming about hot running water, sheets that covered the mattress, flushing toilets and other such mythical conveniences that would be awaiting me in Lombok as I had already arranged accommodation at the Sheraton there for the week. I boarded the shuttle bus to head the harbour and there in the bus is Birgit, a woman I did my volunteer migrant tutoring course with last year. It was very random! The drive went for about...

Taking the Long Way

Oct 25, 2008 - Bali - Island of the Gods

“Show your confidence. Show you’re not afraid. Go to restaurants. Go shopping.” - Rudolph William Giuliani, September 12, 2001 The people of Bali, Indonesia must have known that Rudy had urged us to go shopping because they were waiting for us in droves as we arrived at the coastal town of Padang Bai. This shallow water port on the south side of Bali is a jumping off point of Bali for ferry connections to some other local islands in the Indonesian archipelago. There are over 13,000 islands in Indonesia and Bali is the fourth largest of...
