Dec 30, 2007 - Bali

I landed at Manchester airport on time and quickly raced over to the other terminal, picked up a new boarding pass and collasped onto the plane to Doha. After seven hours I was in Doha, the capital of Qatar (a tiny country in the middle east) and by this point I was becomming seriously tired. I had managed to get a couple of hours sleep on the last flight but having no sleep the night before was starting to tell. I had four hours at Doha airport and ended up chatting to this random woman from the Sudan who was sitting beside me for a...

Dec 15, 2007 - Preparation for Clinic Visits, Legian-Kuta

We spent Friday and Saturday in Legian-Kuta, Bali resting-up and preparing for the weeks ahead. We consolidated and took inventory of all the donated supplies. Between the three of us, we had carried 9+ pieces of luggage!! The good news is there are even more supplies coming with Karen and Sarah who are arriving in a few days. Besides treatment supplies we have yoga mats for one of the local children's facilities, and newborn clothing for the birthing clinic we will visit. The beaches of Kuta are the focus of tourism in Bali, and...

Sep 29, 2007 - Bali

Bali has been really nice for the 2 weeks we were there, the average temp was around 30 to 35 degrees. We dident do a whole lot only sunbathing and watching dvd's. The dvd's were us$1 each and if you bought 10 you got 4 free. We ended up with about 55 altogether. We were staying in a beautiful hotel called Sayang Maha Mertha and everyday we got freshly picked flowers on our pillows and towels. The price of the hotel was realy god aswell, it was less than 200 euros between us for the 2 weeks and that included laundry and a minibar bill. Our...

Jul 29, 2007 - The day is finally over

7.05pm Time to board finally. I was looking forward to getting to Bali as my tan was fading rapidly. Actually it has basically gone. Not happy about that. On the plane I realised just how sleep deprived I was. I was in my seat and just about to mention the grasshopper that I saw on the seat in front to the guy next to me...when it disappeared. I NEED SLEEP. We arrived in Bali and I got my seven day visa through a bloody long slow process and then booked a taxi through the coupon place. We arrived at Vilarisi, the hotel I booked and they had...

Jul 26, 2007 - Kuta, Indonesia - Day 1

We boarded another AirAsia flight to Bali, Indonesia. This too was a pretty nice flight. We were able to see some islands and volcanoes while flying over Indonesia. We didn't buy a guide book or do any research before landing, so this made arriving at the airport a little interesting. I wanted to go to Indonesia and it's suppose to be nice, so we went. We found a decent guesthouse that was recommended by Joni who we met in Laos. Unfortunately, it is high season now and almost everything is full including his recommendation hotel, so we had...

Jul 25, 2007 - Indonesia: Bali

This past weekend Jeremy and I went to Bali, a small island in Indonesia. From Singapore, it takes about 2 and half hours by plane. Before I explain about our trip, let me explain a little bit about Bali's recent history. Bali is a pretty island with approximately 11 million people, mostly of the Hindu religion. The ONLY resource the country has for their economy is tourism. Believe me, they have NO other way to get income. Except maybe selling rice, but that doesn't really count. Well, for a very long time, Bali was the perfect...
