May 18, 2011 - Kuta pt II

The next morning where were due to go back to kuta! There was no electricity and no water! So shower was just wishful thinking! We had breakfast at a restaurant that morning, coz the guys at the hostel where really slow and we couldn’t face yet another banana pancake! Then we went to the boat! On the way to the port we found the reason why there was no electricity in gili! There was a fire that night in a local shop and they had a power short cut! Fortunately there were no people harmed! The Boat ride back was pleasant however the bus ride...

This morning I got in touch with Reini who had already been waiting for us! Than we had lunch with Zee and the rest of the gang and went to the beach! Reini had already made some local friends. We were chilling for a while with them on the beach and than I rented a surfboard and started to ride the white wash in! in the beginning I had a hard time but after a while I managed to get up and ride a few waves. After watching the sunset we went back to freshen up 4 dinner! We had dinner with reini and Balinese friend of hers than we met up with...

Feb 17, 2011 - Back To Kuta

Last day of our Bali tour. Packed up once again & in the car by 8am & on the road heading back to Kuta. On the way we stopped to visit: a) Wood carving factory b) Batik & Weaving Factory c) Silver & Goldsmith Factory I am still so impressed to see the quality & beauty of all the various artists in Bali. It is just amazing but we just can’t buy too much as we are already on our weight allowance limit for the airlines. Apart from that it would be impossible to choose from such a great selection of artwork. We visit the Ulau temple on the way...

Feb 15, 2011 - The real Kuta...

An unscheduled stop!!! Arrived 15th February 2011 Departed 17th February 2011 Flight to Darwin was cancelled as a cyclone was on its way there so we were all bussed to the 5 star resort of the Ramada Bintang about 1km from the centre of hell (Kuta)! Totally fine with that though (although not the cyclone bit!) as I didn’t leave the resort! It was beautiful. All food included and paid for by the airline! Cheers!

Feb 12, 2011 - Kuta, Bali

I had thought about going to Yogyakarta in Java to see the famous Borobudur temple but Melky had been trying to persuade us to go to his home island of Flores to see the Komodo dragons. This was quite tempting but after hearing that we would have to spend a night onboard a small boat we decided to give it a miss. Instead we finally opted to first go for a five day/four night tour of Bali itself & then see later if we wanted to do a second trip somewhere else. So we contacted Melky again in the morning & arranged to start our tour tomorrow,...

Feb 11, 2011 - Bali - Indonesia

Well here we are in Bali. We have been to Bali several times before, the first time being when we lived in Jakarta back in 1985. We had a couple of visits during the 18 months we were there & have been back a couple of times since, but not since about 1992. We’ve always loved it & find that the people here are always so very nice. We think that it is because they are mainly Hindus that it makes them so open & friendly. So we were keen to see if things have changed. Well if we had fun with sorting out our money in India, Singapore & Malaysia...

Feb 4, 2011 - Road Romance

Friends often ask me about romance on the road: do I meet a lot of girls, have I ever fallen in love, do I still stay in contact with anyone. Some people even think that the traveling circuit is a big international orgy (not true- although I have heard some stories). The reality is that 'road romance' is not what you might think. While you meet many beautiful, smart, interesting people from all over the world (yes, even Germans), it is complicated by the fact that travelers paths criss-cross so quickly and relationships are so transitory. I...

Feb 4, 2011 - Kuta, Bali

Arrived 4th February Departed 8th February Arrived pretty late at night and felt really intimidated by the locals and pretty unsafe to be honest! It is like Blackpool here but WORSE! The streets are really unclean, there is building work everywhere and soooo many very young, drunken Aussie boys! YUCK! Had a walk on the beach and after refusing 38 massages, 26 manicures, 34 pedicures, 100 modes of transport, 75 surfing lessons, 20 drinks and a ‘happy ending’ from an 80 year old woman, I figured the 7 minutes I’d spent there was enough!! I...

Dec 21, 2010 - Kuta - Lombok Island

Like Bali (read the previous blog entitled, "Bali") Lombok has its own famous surf spot, and ironically, it too is named Kuta. Besides their names and surfing reputations, Kuta, Bali and Kuta, Lombok have nothing else in common. Sitauted on the Southern Coast of Lombok Island, travelers do not just stumble upon Kuta, Lombok, instead it is a true destination point. Hugging a magnificent coast line, Kuta Lombok might still be a small blip on the Indonesian and world tourism radar, if not for the recent influx of exploratory surfers. Surf...

Dec 13, 2010 - Sail, Scuba & Safari!

Departing the Gili Islands only a few hours behind schedule (Indonesian time), our revamped pirate ship sailed east towards the famous Komodo National Park, following the northern coasts of Lombok, Sumbawa, and Flores Islands.   A total of 7 wayfarers, 2 dive masters, 1 chef, 1 cook, and 3 captains completed our crew.  A dozen or so sleeping  bunks resided below deck but unfortunately, so did sleeps nemesis: sea sickness.  Every night, we would instead drag the thin mattresses above deck and assume a game of, what I like to call, "Port...
