Sep 27, 2014 - Bali 3 - A Dose of Ocean

Somehow these days get better and better. I've missed out on Bali surfing so far, so me and my buddy Nigel decide to do an hour or so after lunch. This ends up being an all day affair. We get the boards on a good deal of 10$ for the day, park our stuff and go surf. Ive surfed 3-4 times prior, and it's crazy how fast you pick it up again. It's the type of skill that's like riding a bike, years later you build on what you did previously. The trouble I had on other occasions surfing was not all waves were good enough and you end up paddling...

Sep 26, 2014 - Bali 2 - Monkey Business

We had big plans today to see the entire southern area of Bali. A group of 5 of us booked a small minivan to drive us around to local beaches, temples and get food. This was the first time driving around during the day, the only word for it was manic. How are there no traffic lights on this island?! If you can imagine our 4 lane intersections without lights, and cars simply driving slowly through, that's the closest thing to Bali driving. There may be 50 cars in an intersection and you wonder, how any of them made it unscathed. Mind you,...

Sep 25, 2014 - Bali 1 - Australia Island

10 hours later I was born anew. After tanning for a bit I decided to do my usual and just walk. The hostel was at Legian Beach, which is essentially just part of what is called Kuta Beach. A 10km long, perfect stretch of sand with perfect rolling waves and hotels lining the ocean. I ignored surfing for the moment and spent the afternoon just strolling up and down the beach admiring the vista and not thinking about anything. This is vacation. I walked up to the more luxurious Seminyak, back down to Legian and into the famous Kuta Town....

Sep 24, 2014 - Travel - Corners of Asia

Literally, go back to the guesthouse (after KFC again), put some new clothes on and grab my bag for the airport. I wasn't anticipating my fatigue. On the packed airport subway, I couldn't get a seat..once I actually fell asleep standing and fell to the floor. Whoops, that's embarrassing. Departing from Seoul airport was a pain, just a huge terminal with tonnes of queues. Probably the closest I've come to missing a plane but still 30mins spare. On the plane there was less relief. Air Asia may be a good carrier for short flights, but NOT 6...

Nov 10, 2013 - Weekend Getaway in Seminyak

This weekend I went to Seminyak a little beach town in southwest Bali. Eight other volunteers and I rented an amazing three bedroom villa with private pool, air conditioning and ample bathrooms. It was quite luxurious. The first night we ordered room service and drank beer at the pool. It was really nice to just let loose with everyone. Saturday morning we took our time before heading out. Lorna, Mirjam, Brent, Liz and I just wanted to spend the day in the water, so we did just that. We ventured up the road to Potato Head Beach Club where...

Nov 9, 2013 - Things I've Learned in Bali

Things I've learned in Bali 1. If a hotel villa advertises "sleeps eight" don't expect a minimum of four beds. Eight people apparently can sleep in three beds. Yup, three! 2. You should drive on the left side of the road. However that's just a mere suggestion. If you'd prefer to drive straight down the middle or on the right that is fine too! 3. Internet cafes have evolved in the eight years since I backpacked Europe. They now consist of a wireless router and available password. No actual computers! BYOB 4. A smile is universally...

Nov 3, 2013 - cambodia

Hi all, have spent 10 or so days in Cambodia. its very nice and more relaxed that other places! We stayed in a hostel, 6 people in one room. We had some nice people in our room, so spend the day times out with them. We went to angkor wat, which is a huge temple and eveyone goes to see sunrise and sunset. We had to get up at 4am and get a tuk tuk to the temple. When we arrived there were already lots of poeple waiting for the sun to rise. After sunrise, which was amazing views, we walked around the temple, also went to the place where they...

Oct 23, 2013 - Bali

Hi, have been in Bali for about 7 days. Money is very hard to work out, as 18,150 Indonesia rupees is £1.so when enquiring to stay at hotels they say amouts like 1.7million (this is the posh ones!) And 350,000! So you have to work everything out on the calculator! not much to report from here, it has been very hot and sunny and we spent alot of time at our swimming pool sunbathing! We have done some shopping as all clothes, shoes, electricals are cheap out here. My bag is getting heavier, so need to send some clothes home so that my bag...

Our Bali Holiday

Jan 27, 2012 - Bali

For some this will be surprise. We decided that Bali was so close and it was somewhere where Gemma wanted to go, so we have been here since the 22nd. It has certainly been an experience! We ventured down to the beach to discover that a landfill has less rubbish in it than the beaches here!! How Australians love this place so much, we do not know. The locals collect up the plastic and then burn it in the evenings. The rivers are riddled with litter and sewage. The shops are nice and lots of cheap goods and designer copies, but you are so...

Jan 18, 2012 - kuta and Ubud

Traveling can be exciting and fun, daunting and full of adventures, but it also provides the traveler with many lessons and new perspectives on the world.  One thing that I have learned after going to Fiji, New Zealand and Indonesia, is that at first when you arrive in a place, it is almost always overwhelming and intimidating. When you hop on the plane to go to a new place, the 'journey' there seems long; however, before you know it you find yourself being overridden with new scents, sights and feelings as you leave behind the safety of...
