Aug 21, 2006 - Ubud, Kuta - Bargaining and One Last Binge

Once back in Ubud we honed our bargaining skills, bought all the stuff that we ogling on our previous visit and jetted back to Kuta for one last night of revelry. Once we reopened our bags we realized just how cheap all this incredible stuff really was. Sarongs, scarves, masks, sculptures - and all without putting more than a tiny dent in our remaining travel fund. A night of revelry we wanted, a night of revelry we got. Gavin had decided to bring his good looks down to Bali for a holiday away from flash photograpy and being surrounded by...

Aug 10, 2006 - Ubud - Art and Ali

After a couple of days of living like true Kuta bums, which means dressing and acting like surfers without knowing how to surf, we took off to the artistic and cultural center of Bali, Ubud. On the way, a French man was asking about different English accents, to which I replied, the Scottish and Irish are the worst, I can never understand anything they saying. A head turned around in front with a big grin, saying "Well, not all of us." Luckily he didn't take this as an insult and actually asked to join Graeme and me for the evening in Ubud....

Aug 8, 2006 - Ubud, Bali (new photos and movies)

After a week with my brother Gerrit and his son Guy, we headed over to Bali, Indonesia for a week with his wife jocelyn and there daughter Zoe. Both visits were fantastic! Patty and I just found the most amazing house to rent for the next 7 weeks. It's set in tropical grounds on the edge of rice fields. There are two floors, 2 bedrooms upstairs, a kitchen and family room down. The whole house is wide open with mocquito nets for the beds. I can't explain in words how amazing it is. Ubud is this very artsy, cultural town in the middle of the...

Aug 8, 2006 - Kuta - Bedroom Surfing

After a lengthy and typically delayed Air Asia flight I finally arrived in Bali. My last leg was pretty enjoyable sitting beside this mid-thirties Spanish man that was moving to Bali indefinitely. He had found paradise and didn't want to be anywhere else. His stories about the landscape, the surfing, the food, the parties, the girls, all sounded a little too good to be true. However, after spending over two weeks in Bali and the surrounding area, I believe every word that came out of his mouth. I met the big smiling eighth wonder of the...

Aug 6, 2006 - And back over to Bali

Well after a rather wet journey back from Lombok we grabbed a cab to a spot of luxury (V nice villa/ hotel...outdoor bathroom etc etc!) for 2 nights. Vic & Rich's friends were in town for some R&R non-backpacker style...yeh! We spent 2 days chilling out by the pool, walking along the beach at Seminyak, 5 mins from the villa and north of the main beach area of Kuta...and Matt & I also had to do some winter clothing shopping, so we hired a moped to get into Kuta on. We only had one near miss when Matt nearly tail gated a car! We had a couple...

Aug 1, 2006 - Bali: First 3 days

When I arrived in Bali, Kevin (my cousin) had his driver picked me up at the airport. We weren't more than 5 miles outside the airport when we got into a car accident. A motor-scooter with two boys riding on it rear ended us. Since we were in an SUV, we barely felt it; they on the other hand were lying on the side of the road. Luckily, no one was injured, but it did add some excitement to the beginning of the trip. When we arrived at the villa, I unpacked and instantly began relaxing. (You'd have thought I was overworked or something). The...

Jul 30, 2006 - Indonesia (Bali)

Bali marked the halfway part of our trip and a much need sojourn from the developing world and sightseeing. We were pampered and spoiled by a friend of our friend Marisa, Lucienne, and the lovely staff of her amazing hotel- Tugu. One of the most beautiful hotels (Balinese style villas nestled in lush foliage and flowers adorned with amazing antiques) we have ever been to and with the most genuinely friendly staff (we got very accustomed to being greeted as Mr. William and Ms. Angie), we would highly recommend both Bali and Hotel Tugu as a...

Jul 29, 2006 - Bali & a family reunion!

Our evening flight to Bali was delayed by an hour- but that was good as Vic and Rich were arriving 2 hours after us from London. After a good flight we arrived in Bali and went to find a bar while we waited for Vic and Rich...And waited..... An hour after the flight arrived they came out...with no bags! Their bags had been left in Singapore after a close call on the connection. Whoops- apparently they would arrive at lunchtime the next day- No worries! We headed to Kuta (the Bali destination & where the 2 sets of bombs went off a few years...

Jul 28, 2006 - Nusa Dua, Bali, Indonesia

Jo's Dad (Henry) and Step-Mum (June) had kindly arranged for us all to stay in an apartment in the southern Resort of Nusa Dua for the final few days of our stay. We were all sorry to leave Padang Bai as we had had a fantastic (and very chilled) time there. We were not disappointed when we arrived, however, as the resort was incredibly luxurious and we realised we'd have no problems relaxing here! On the way to Nusa Dua we thought we should get in some culture so we visited the Palace at Klong Kong which was very beautiful and strangely...

Jul 26, 2006 - Bali Arrival!!!

July 27th: Arrived in Bali yesterday and was greeted by the sweltering heat, its about 28 degrees here but humid as all hell. Met a cool guy from Belgium called Joost so i have been showing him the ropes as its his first time and my second. Found new accomodation today which cost 30000 rupee a night ($4.50 AUD) so cheap but i was ripped off in the first place im staying but that is expected. Lucky i have been here before because it is a HUGE culture shock compared to Australia with beggers and heaps of people hassling on the street. U just...

Jul 25, 2006 - Padang Bai, Bali, Indonesia

We arrived in Bali late at night so had decided to stay close to the airport for the first night. As it was pitch black when we arrived we didn't take much in until we awoke the next morning and found ourselves in the most beautiful and tranquil surroundings. We were staying in an Eco Lodge in the middle of nowhere on a hill with a fabulous view of South Bali. It was a stark contrast to the hustle and bustle (and shops) of Singapore and we breathed a huge sigh of relief! We ventured to the beach in the local village of Jimbaran where we...

Jul 21, 2006 - Bali

So, this was the day when we said aurevoir to Australia and bonjour to Bali! Lugging our bags to the train station in the rain was probably the low point of the morning!!! However, saying that we did have to sit on the plane for about 40 minutes because some girl was having "issues" with her boarding pass. Grrrr - some people!!! Anyway, after a relatively hassle-free flight we arrived in Bali not far behind schedule, and sure enough the sun was shining WOO HOO!!! Forgotten what blue sky looked like! We thought we would be lounging by the...
