Nov 27, 2006 - Bali, Indonesia

The flight to Bali was interesting. The name on my ticket was "Ms Kathleen" (no surname) and there was no need to show ID at any time. The plane was packed; at only $30, it is quite affordable for many. There was no air conditioning and it felt like the hottest place in the world. Fortunately it was a short flight. We headed to Sanur on the east coast and stayed at the Tangjung Sari which is Balinese accomodation with Bali-style doors and staff in traditional dress. Sanur is supposed to be a top place for watersports, but there wasn't much...

We would NOT have been able to do it without you !! After a tearful farewell to the goodbye girls, off to...

Oct 4, 2006 - Ubud and Ulu Watu

Yesterday I went to Ubud. It is about an hour away from Kuta. I got this guy named Gusek, who is a friend of one of the guys who works at the hotel to take me. As we drove through Despensar, I saw a Dunkin' Donuts!! Can you believe it? There is a Dunkin' Donuts in Bali and not in Orange County! The drive to Ubud was beautiful. Ubud is up in the hills and there are tons of rice fields. Gustek took me to a place where they make the Batik fabrics. It is a process where they color the fabric with wax and then dye it and then remove the wax. In...

Oct 1, 2006 - Welcome to Bali

Today I arrived in Bali. I am staying at a hotel in Kuta, which is a popular area near the beach. It is also where the Bali bombings in 2002 took place. There is a really big memorial across the street from where it happened. All the Balinese people that I have met so far and been really nice. The food is really good and so cheap. Right now $1 US = about 9,000 rp. My dinner, fried noodles (with veggies and meat) and a beer, costs me 20,000 rp. I have my own hotel room, which is a nice break from the crowded dorm rooms in the hostels in...

Sep 20, 2006 - Mom arrives!

My mother made it to Bali. We are so glad she came. For a while, it looked as if she was going to cancel, but we convinced her to just get on the plane and let us take care of everything. She is also coming with us to New Zealand for a month. Annika has started at another shool and she loves it. She has a best friend, and we went out to her parents house for a brunch. We all had a great time. We are getting ready to leave bali, and we are already feeling as if we are missing the place. I don't know if it is a country that we could live in,...

Sep 5, 2006 - Bali & Gili Trawangan

Well Thailand has been left behind (for now) and Bali has arrived. Flights were fine even though I had to Transit through Singapore, which is a wicked airport. Free Internet, Loads of chilling chairs to rest and nice smoking areas. I know I'm easily pleased. Well worth a visit if Airports are your thing! First Impressions of Bali aren't that good but I must remember I'm in Kuta the party capital of Bali and is bound to be a bit rough and ready. I landed around 9:30 pm and took a taxi to Kuta. After wandering around trying to get my...

YOU ONLY LIVE ONCE

Aug 21, 2006 - Bali part 2

We have settled in to a nice, relaxed grove here in Ubud. We love it here! Have I mentioned that. We have started to branch out from Ubud and explore the surroundings. We met Made (Mah-Day) at one of the temples and decided to hire him for a day to drive us around. It didn't hurt that he brought flowers the following day for Patty and Annika. At that point, I had to throw him a bone. We spent the day together and had a nice day. After, he invited us to his village for a ceremony. We accepted, and garbed in sarongs and a gift basket, we...

Aug 21, 2006 - Goodbye Oz, hello Bali!

We arrived in Bali yesterday after a long day of travelling. First we flew from Perth to Darwin and then, after about 10 hours wandering around in the blazing sun, on to Denpasar. We arrived late and then found out that Sam's rucksack was still in Perth so had to hang around at the airport and fill in forms. We got a taxi to the hotel we'd booked and on arrival were told that they had no record of our booking. They had a free room but it was pretty skanky, also the windows didn't close and the toilet didn't flush. Anyway, Sam fell asleep...
