Apr 3, 2008 - Bali, Indonesia

Rob here ... Off to Bali for a week where we really did as little as humanly possible. There are really cheap ($1) DVD's here so we stocked up on about 40 including the second season of Heroes and the latest season of Little Britain. The big highlight of Bali though would have to be our new tattoo's (sorry Mom!). I had mine done first and when Steven saw how amazing it turned out, he had to show me up by getting a bigger one... ouch! Mine consists of a Koi fish, Lotus flower and water within the outline of a sun... there is sentimental...

Dec 12, 2007 - Flight to Denpasar, Bali via Tokyo

"And We're Off!" I met Frank and Jen at JFK airport for our Wednesday 9am departure flight to Denpasar, Bali via Tokyo. The first flight segment (New York-Tokyo) was almost 14 hours long so cashing-in those frequent flyer miles for comfortable travel was well worth it! First Class has individual sleeper seats/pods and I was pampered with very nice kimono pajamas. After pulling an "all-nighter" before the early morning flight (last minute packing), the rest on the plane was very much needed, and I was able to sleep most of the flight. We...

Nov 23, 2007 - Bali

We had a great week in Bali, relaxing, seeing some sights and enjoying Indonesian hospitality...the resort is located high in the Jimbaran Hills, hence the name...and is quite removed from the hustle and bustle of the major resort areas of Nusa Dua and Kuta and the city of Denpasar......on Sunday we relaxed around the pool during the day before being well fed at a welcome BBQ where we enjoyed a wonderful selection of grilled meats...something we haven't had a great deal of over the last couple of months....pork chops, beef, lamb, chicken...

Aug 10, 2007 - Denpasar

We left Ubud and headed south to Denpasar to stay a night at our guesthouse and retrieve our big bags. We often question why we are carrying so much stuff when we just traveled for 10 days with (2) day bags, but oh well... As the saying goes "We are backpackers!!"

Jul 30, 2007 - Denpasar - Day 1

We bargained down to a reasonable price and got a ride to Denpasar, the capital of Bali. We had to drop off Cynthia's temporary passport at the US Embassy to get some pages added. With the task complete, we walked around Independence Monument, which has a very nice field where locals exercise and play soccer. I really wanted to kick the ball around so after walking around the park I asked a local if I could join in. The sun was going down so we were only able to play for about 30 minutes. There were two locals that I was playing soccer with...

May 2, 2007 - Bali: Kuta Beach

We finally made it after a quick flight from KL to our long awaited destination of Bali, home of world class surf waves, white sand beaches and the cheapest prices in all of Asia...and we weren't disappointed! We got into Kuta around 10 at night, and as usual, we were super tired after travelling, so we settled on the first cheap hotel we could find...big mistake!! The place looked like no one had slept in it in around 10 years, was covered in dust, and it stunk like moth balls...it had a bath tub, but oddly enough no sink...around 2am we...

Apr 12, 2007 - Bye Bye Bali

Final pictures from my last week in Bali. Not much to report other than daily surfing (or the attempting thereof), taking motorbike rides, getting over sickness, some souvenir shopping and beach life. On my last day as I was sitting in a cafe they were filming some footage for a Jakarta television show. As the token gringo in the cafe they asked me to be in the filming and act my natural self. Apparently on the of the girls is one of the most famous actresses in Indonesia. I was feeling generous so I did it all for free. I even offered my...

Mar 10, 2007 - The start of South East Asia, Kuta, Bali

Hi every body We landed in Bali late thurs night and only took 2 1/2 hrs, but it feels like we have travelled back in time! its def back to basics again! however we have treated ourselves and stumped up 20 quid a night for a room in a posh spa! its gorgeous, there were flowers on our bed, fountains in the pool and a tv with cable and even room service! its still cheaper than sleeping in some dorms in 0z!!! We have wandered around, been to the water park and eaten in the local night market. Jo has treated herself to a 3hr pamper session in...

Mar 9, 2007 - Out of Dodge, again

The high winds followed me from Alaska to Bali. I am in Ubud right now, an artsy jungle town in the middle of Bali and the wind has been whipping. Apparently it killed 4 people in Bali yesterday. I was planning on heading out to the Gili islands to start my Dive master but the boats aren't running. After arriving in Denpasar a few days ago I headed to the beach town of Kuta, where I have been before. In Kuta you are immediately barraged by people offering you a taxi, a watch, sunglasses or a massage. Weary from jet lag, I bargained (as you...

Hello All, First of all - HAPPY BIRTHDAY MUM... Today (9th March) is my mum's 39th birthday (true) and seeing as she's such a brilliant, all round lovely lady I would like all our readers to have a special birthday drink on her behalf tonight (you can also send messages to the site for her to read)!! OK onto our trip... Well what a difference a day (and about 40 miles) makes in Bali!! Since leaving the rain of the mountains we have been treated to glorious sunshine for the last two days!! Not only have we been fortunate with the weather,...

Mar 9, 2007 - Bali

To be honest, as much as I loved Oz, i was ready for a change. The only downside to leaving Oz was leaving all my lovely new friends. I was a bit scared i'd forget how to make new ones. LOL! The hotel i had booked in Bali was lovely. Not only did i have a room to myself (with a double bed), I had my own bathroom. The only downside to the hotel was there weren't that many backpackers and it was full of Australian chavs. Yuck! This is because as i was quickly to discover, Kuta (main tourist area), is a bit like the Costa del Sol. I decided...

Mar 6, 2007 - The Rain in Bali Falls Mostly in The Valley!!

Hello All, Jodie and I have just returned from a rather disappointing trip to the Volcano. The hotel we stayed at wasn't too bad (other than the millions of fly's buzzing around everywhere) and the food was OK (a little bland but edible) the main problem was the weather! Having traveled 2.5 hours by taxi to get to a remote village at the base, we booked a sunrise volcano trek for 5am the following morning. The night was pretty wet but having spoken to the locals, who advised us that it never rained until lunchtime, we packed ourselves off...
